I think the Devs threw us a bone with the reward for one of the FS crafting quests that just ended. See this post.

The screenshot shows a lightsaber crafting tool with 20 uses of "Guaranteed Critical Assemblies". Posters in that thread report that "critical assemblies" allow you to experiment past the cap.

This is in-line with what others in this thread have said about once-in-a-blue-moon abnormally high results. It also fits with Rocky's (the 44% smith) hints that it took lots of grinding; that FS skills, player cities, and food (which all give assembly bonuses) would help; and that it could apply to all sorts of crafting besides just armor.

some interesting reading on that post page 2

some highlights:

...they are very very rare. We've had maybe 2-3 on our server total that I've heard of. That's what makes this tool particularly valuable being that without it chances are you'll never recieve a critical success on your own.

...an amazing success still succumbs to the hard caps, while a criticle success can go beyond....

...A critical success allows the item to go over the hard capped stats that are present based on the materials used. Basically this allows the user the ability to create the best sabres on the server(assuming they're not using totally crap materials). Criticle success items often have significantly better final stats than the best normally created components/weapons that get all amazing success(since they always hit the hard caps). So while say a normal weapons stock is 40/40 .350 with great/amazing success along the way, I have some that got a criticle success and are now 40/40 .175....

...These are so rare that I don't know if the stats that break the hard caps are random or if all stats on that line etc can break the hard cap. So to be able to guarantee this for 5-20 times is a huge benefit. And if it only effects speed as is the case on the stocks I have then it's still a huge benefit to those grinding, and allows even more flexibility in the crystals/pearls used in the sabre....

SO IS IT A CRITICAL SUCCESS?

Another possability is experimenting with multiple points. Sometimes you get wierd results when doing that if you get multiple amazings. Like I've had a case where the base went up but the special protections didn't, resulting in me having to trash the resulting armor. I usually experiment with 3 points at a time and if I get an amazing result, it pushes the cap up a little. For example, the padded armor I make is 43 base if I don't get the amazing multipoint result with the base effectiveness experimented as far as I can, and 44 base if I do get the amazing multipoint result. I've seen this happen with medicines before too (which is where almost all of my crafting experience comes from).

meh, I'm having visions of what the weaponsmiths went through ages ago with the duped tissue bug thingie where some WS's were able to make tons of high quality krayt weapons without having to use tons of tissues. Thus ruining the krayt weapon market for the non exploiters for overhalf a year, and with SOE not doing a single thing to most of the exploiters.

Kudo's if you've somehow refined crafting to a new level, but the gloating and hinting and refusal to share your methods are to me marks of the exploiter.

I dunno, we'll see. If godly or any of the other smiths on bria start producing higher then 40% stun (non patch day stuff anyways) I'll know it's time for me to get out of the stun armor business, or join the ranks of exploiters.

my amazing assemblies have never increased my total experimentation threshold. because of that, this is most likely a bug that will be squashed, but i wish it were true across the board. currently, as a general rule, amazing assemblies yield no extra benefits over a great assembly.

Well, i know its something sort of different but this did happen to me and i can guarentee it is not an exploit, as i could not reproduce. Might be a bug but i hope not, IMHO it's the crafter's version of getting that amazing piece of "legendary" or "exceptional" loot.

That's the thread i started. Not many weaponsmiths want to comment though. oh well.

There are weaponsmiths on the SWGCraft.com forum that are claiming to be mass producing VK with max damage in the mid-160's and they say that no loot was used in the crafting process. It's been widely known that 150 seems to be the theoretical cap on VK. The only explanation would be the same assembly roll that Rocky achieved here.

A couple of notes.

I have the same resources Rocky has but I do not have the Crism in bulk. I haven't been able to achieve his results crafting in a Research Center and eating Cake. However, I do not have +20 Assembly in my suit.

Secondly, I consider Rocky a crafting friend on Intrepid and although we have not worked together to craft I have found him to be aboveboard and honest. I would never think that he would exploit. In fact, when I released my Grinding Armor and drove prices down on basic 80% Kinetic Armor he had nothing but nice things to say aobut me and wished me well. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the other smith on Intrepid that has hit 44%. He mass-produced Krayt weapons and Scythe and his only excuse has been to claim ignorance. I don't buy his excuses. I'd feel better about the whole situation if a known exploiter wasn't the second smith involved. However, again, I do not believe that Rocky would exploit. I just question his choice of crafting mate.

When Yaman first told me about this- I did think he was full of crap as well. Thats why I sat down and grinded it out myself.

As far as a crafting mate- Yaman is my biggest competiter (we both mainly produce PvP armor). However, since we do sell to different markets (hes reb/im imp)(i.e. the people who buy from him dont like me/vice versa) we do share tips a lot.

As far as what Yaman did in the past - I can't comment since I never paid attention to that stuff (recently started using the forums more often). However, I can say that I would never associate myself with exploiters-known or not. I will be honest that a lot of people on my server may not like me- but they do appreciate the armor I make and know that I do not exploit. Nothing is worth ruining that reputation.

were different stats noticable on the assembly success screen - or only once you began experimentation?

Have any screenshots of the experimentation screen?

The stats were noticable on the assembly screem. For the life of me I didnt remember if it said critical or amazing. When grinding em out I only looked at the stats/numbers.

Also, when your grinding out dbl amazings (like 67/40 stun) it can BE VERY EASY TO MISS THE higher stats. I can only imagine how many times I may have missed it.

Another observation I made - the assembly tapes are still "bugged" (ie dont work). When equiped vs using the food I got a lot more amazings on assembly with the food.

Something else I have yet to confirm- when researching on other crafting boards some have said that when they get amazings on assembly(not experimentation)it takes less points to reach the cap.

Assembly tapes are not bugged but they are wrongly named.

They increased your chances to get amazing during regular experimentation and reduce the chances to fail.....

So just for clarification, this is what to do: Grind out layers and watch the assembly screen. If the %'s on assembly are higher than they normally are, then you have a critical success. If you have a critical success, then a line can be experimented past it's resource cap?

My questions are 1.) Does it only happen on Amazing success assembly? It seems another poster had this happen ona great, but I also saw the assembly food being mentioned. 2.) Does it just let you experiment to 100%, ignoring the resource quality, does it increase the experimentation % cap by an amount (say being capped at 92%, it raises the cap to 97% instead), or does it ignore resource caps AND let you experiment past 100%?

So it's rare "Critical Success" rolls when doing the initial assembly that allow experimentation beyond the resources natural cap? Not Amazing assemblys?

I'll confess after my first month of crafting, when every amazing assembly was exactly the same as any great assembly, I stopped paying attention to the assembly stage of armor crafting.

Does that cake stuff that effects initial assembly success give a greater chance of rolling critical success assembly's then?

I think that the issue- many smiths like myself, when grinding dble amazings on exp do not pay attention to the starting stats with assembly and may miss it.

Good comments, and a great read. 5* Sometimes it does get old seeing people flame without even checking things out first. I'm going to create a character on there tonight just to look at it myself.

Gives me something to aspire too (as if I needed something else to aspire too hehe) )

ok, I did some (fruitless) testing tonight. I'm using a 15.00 tool (freshly made, never decay'ed), a 45.000 crafting station (yes perfect, YAA for the single day crafting patch), +20 experimentation suit, with +7 assembly (not finished my suit yet alas), and in my shop in the wilderness (no city, or city bonuses, would any of the city bonuses help with assembly?)

How about this.... Try and get the worst crafting station and tool you can, it would up the criticals fails, but would is help with the other criticals???
