Thread: The thing people have been waiting for: What armors are certified for which professions.

Actually, unless you are a member of the military or a law enforcement agency or have been given special permission by one or the other, you can't go out and buy a kevlar vest.....and its a felony if you are caught illegally wearing it.

And sure, if you have access to a vest, you can put it on, but can you put it on RIGHT? Do you know which panels go where, where your ballistic plates go, and are you certain you have the straps adjusted right? If you don't, you leave a gap for a bullet to get you. Also, do you know what, exactly, kevlar protects against? Do you know when kevlar won't protect you?

Have you had training so that you can function while wearing heavy, hot armor? Manuevering with the extra weight and balance change isn't something you can just do...

Besides, once again, game mechanics and balance REQUIRE armor certs. Otherwise, you run into the same problem that exists now with Joe Noob getting ahold of 80% composite and soloing quenkers, making master marksman in less time than a buff runs...

Regardless of what some seem to think, you can't just "put on kevlar" and be protected in real-life, and game balance requires similar rules.

I'm not disagreeing with armor certifications, and my comment was only to illustrate a point. The fact that crafters and entertainers get NOTHING is my problem. I'm lucky that I'm a master AS/master pike, but I know alot of people that are master musican/dancers or pure crafters. If these professions can't wear armor.. then give them damage mitigation.. oh wait. will probably get exploited...

This entire thread hasdegraded to pointless critism and bashing from what I have read. Lets wait until they open up the elite professions on TC then SHOW them all thecrafters andentertainers gettingwasted. Not that I have much optimism left. Right now it looks like the system and game mechanicsare set in stone, and all the devs are doing now is tweaking the graphics and bugs.

Don't try and tell us that these restrictions are necessary for a mmorpg to work, and don't try and tell us that all mmorpg must be the same.

Many of us have been playing SWG since the beginning (As have you, based on your forum registration) and it could have continued to exist in it's unique form.

SWG was different and perhaps that is why so many of us have continued to play, despite it's enormous imbalances (that have been scheduled to be fixed for a long while).

Reducing Buffs to a minimal enhancement...
Lowering the resistances of armor (And balancing each set for variety)...

Those two changes could have made the original and unique SWG system work much better.

If those didn't solve some of the major imbalances on their own...
Lower Melee damage and most melee attack speeds (Most likely Rifleman attacks as well).

Those changes would have made a huge difference for the betterment of this game.
I think you would have found balance and a game where we couldn't solo so many things so easily.

Claiming that Restrictive Armor Certs are required for balance and for a working mmorpg is incorrect.

I understand the want to defend what the Devs are trying to accomplish against the waves of negative feedback, but there is truth to be found on both sides of the battle.

I just hope that the Dev Team is open-minded enough to see the whole picture.

May the force be with you.

It is a whole new system, from top to bottom, and that new system requires a great many changes from the existing game.

What may be best may not be easiest. In Beta 3, when weapon certs were added, the uproar shook the community moreso than the armor certs are now. The arguments were almost identical to the ones being used now against armor certs. SOE added weapon certs anyway, along with the other changes to weapons.

Guess what? SOE was right. Can you imagine what the game would be like right now without those certs?

In Beta 3, there were no lot limits. First, they were dropped to "only" 75 lots, then down to 10. Another huge outcry. SOE did it anyway.

Guess what? SOE was right. Run through a cross-lot trading created harvester farm and imagine the entire galaxy looking like that.

So they are bringing in Armor certs. So what that you can't wear "X" helmet with your outfit....find something else. Do you expect the entire Combat Upgrade to revolve around YOUR sense of style? Hardly. No, you need to go and support your local Tailor or make suggestions about having "decorative" armor made by tailors that have no protection but simply look like certain armors. Add that bit of "camoflauge" to the game, so that what you see isn't always what you get (though you're gonna get smoked in PvP if you try).

So what you spent millions of credits on RIS that you won't be able to wear. You have choices, still. Either sell it or take up a profession that allows you to wear it. Or, would you rather they nerf it so that anyone can wear it but the protections will be lower than all the other armors? Makes the Quest Armors kind of pointless if they do that...

Now, don't get me wrong. This isn't to say that SOE is always right. They've made major and serious mistakes that had to be withdrawn, but believe it or not they do know what they are doing. I've been a part of SWG since almost the very beginning, and I've watched this game make tremendous strides, and the CU is the best thing yet...once they get it all balanced out.

Someone was complaining about the sound in another post...like they've gotten to that yet. The finishing touches will include final sounds and effects, but complaining about them 3 or 4 days after the CU went to test center? Hardly worthwhile. Complaining about certs before you get a taste of the advanced combat professions also makes no sense. Wait for it, try it out, then come in and discuss it without whinning or threatening to quit. If you're gonna quit, quit. SOE isn't going to suddenly say "Oh, so-and-so says he's gonna quit, we'd better not do this".

So if Iam a Master pistoleer/MBH and Iam wearing comp armor while using a DE-10 would that cancel anything out?

Not for any, for THIS MMORPG to work, AS IT WAS ORIGINALLY INTENDED. Not all MMORPG's have to be the same, but seriously, you expect certain things when you see MMORPG, so for people to claim ignorance is pure stupidity on their part.

Many of us have been playing SWG since the beginning (As have you, based on your forum registration) and it could have continued to exist in it's unique form.

Yes, and it could have CONTINUED TO LOSE SUBSCRIBERS in it's unique form. SO many people left already because the damn game is unbalanced, and many are starting to be interested again because of the CU. That's why I don't care about players who want to keep the system - they want it for the exploits, and if they leave, they will be dwarfed by the people returning.

SWG was different and perhaps that is why so many of us have continued to play, despite it's enormous imbalances (that have been scheduled to be fixed for a long while).

And it will continue to be different, in that it will become one of the most tactical RPG's on the market. The reason most of us have stuck around is because either we love SW too much to give it up (me), or because we enjoy the exploits and the ability to take advantage of the system (I am guessing you).

Reducing Buffs to a minimal enhancement...
Lowering the resistances of armor (And balancing each set for variety)...

Believe me, on that, I am with you. That would have balanced the game somewhat. But there still would have been solo groups, the game still would have been about spamming the best special, etc. From the very beginning, SWG was MEANT to be a tactical RPG. What you brought up would have added some balance, but done nothing for tactics. I remember when the game first started, before buffs and when tactics mattered - it was a HELL of a lot more fun than it is now. And with the CURB, it is going to return to that, and I can't wait.

No, then you would have had ranged overpowered. An across the board rebalancing is the most fair way to handle it. Then at least if everyone is crying, then it is EVERYONE that is crying, and no one particular group claiming once again they were picked on.

Claiming that Restrictive Armor Certs are required for balance and for a working mmorpg is incorrect.

Not for any working MMORPG - for THIS one, in order to make the original vision for it come true. This is NOT going to be EQ in space. This is going to be FAR more tactical than EQ. And restrictive armor certs are a way to force players to THINK. Yeah, you love to be gung-ho as a rifleman, spamming mindshot3 at pointblank range while wearing 80% kin armor. Well, guess what? You won't be able to do that anymore. And that is a GOOD thing. I welcome tactics with open arms.

I understand the want to defend what the Devs are trying to accomplish against the waves of negative feedback, but there is truth to be found on both sides of the battle.

This I can agree with. There is some truth, and I can understand concerns, but what pisses me off are the people who act like they know what the CURB will bring, people who compare armor in the old system as if it will be the same in the new system, the constant lack of being able to see the other side, the overwhelming whining because people won't be able to solo a krayt, and their not-so-clever ways they try to hide that that is what they are really complaining about, and so on and so on.

I just hope that the Dev Team is open-minded enough to see the whole picture.

And I just hope you can look in the mirror, and hopefully others can too, to see the whole picture themselves. Because right now, there are a lot of players who only are seeing what they want to see.

May the force be with you.

And also with you.

Look, it seems that you and I are on the same page for a good number of things, so I am willing to forgive you for one enormous mistake by yourself...
ZionHalcyon wrote: " The reason most of us have stuck around is because either we love SW too much to give it up (me), or because we enjoy the exploits and the ability to take advantage of the system (I am guessing you)."

You could not be more wrong.
Instead of being insulted by your mistake, you simply end up looking foolish for assuming too much.
I don't mean to return the insult... I do understand the types of players that you refer to.

I don't need to defend myself, but you seem to be someone capable of being respectful and just simply made a mistake
I'm a one account Player, Master Musician, Partial Pistoleer, Partial Creature Handler that likes to adventure without Buffs.
If you still think I'm an exploiter and taking advantage of the game's imbalances, then by all means enjoy your opinion.

Back to our discussion...
It seems like you actually agree with me... as you said, in the old days before we had Buffs, things were more tactical/strategic.
Then how would removing buffs and reducing armor not bring to those more strategic ways once again?
Regardless, I am not against the one health bar system nor against a largely different combat system... I didn't mention it in my post, but I think that removing the whole mind pool weakness is the right thing to do.

What I am against is implimenting a system that places so many more equipment restrictions than what existed before.
You can say that in order for their new system to work, it MUST be that way...
But I am saying that if that system MUST be that way, then come up with a system that doesn not require these armor restrictions.

Honestly I don't think it HAS to be that way, nor that they have to completely overhaul this new system.

The effectiveness of the armor in this system could be based on the Professions and Skills of the Player, but the actual equipping of these armors should not be restricted to certain Professions.

Look, I've stuck with this game mainly because I am such a huge Star Wars Fan, but I realized something over the last month or so...
If SWG's game mechanics hadn't appealed to me as much as they have, then my obsession with Star Wars alone would not have held me to this game quite so much.

I mean it seems silly to me that as an AS I wouldnt beable to even wear armor that I could make from scratch. And its hard enough making a harvester run on Yavin, Endor, Dathomir etc. After CU by the sounds of it. It'll be impossible without armor evne with a buff. I've a hard enough time right now with critters blowing up my bikes now too, and doing tons of damage to me even wearing composite.

BE's are the ONLY 'crafting' profession that has to directly interact with creatures. BE's can't sample DNA sitting on their asses in a hosue.

To which I reply. And all the other crafting professions just sit around all the time? Hell no. Your forgetting about a little thign called 'surveying' and 'tending to harvesters'. Especially for resources for wookiee armor that happen to only spawn on Yavin, Dathomir and Endor. The three nastiest plannets in the game. My point isnt that BEs get to wear armor. I totally agree with this. Docs. Yep there too. But I'm also saying that EVERY Crafter class should get -some- sort of armor to wear. I have -never- seen a full fledged doctor running around in combat unless they were also a CM. THeir almost allways sitting off to the side in a safe house or cloning center buffing their pals. Yet obviously they need armor far more than crafters who have to go out into extremely hostile areas with billions of very nasty and damaging agros.

I've tried out TC5's combat. Right now. At novice everything, I get incaped in one hit by everything harder than a kreetle. Kreetles compared to say.. Klikniks are a bloody walk in the park. If Kreetles are hitting me for 100 or so poitns of damage. And Womp Rats are hitting me for 2800+ in one hit. Then what the hell do you think Klikniks, Rancors, Night Sisters, Night Sister Slaves, Crystal Snakes, And all the hordes of other nasty citters are goign to hit me for when I'm out surveying, maintaining my harvesters etc?

Or what about Tatooine even with Krayt dragons running all over the god damn place. Those are bad enough. Now they'll be even worse.

Oh! But you have a bike! Drive away.

Sure. And while I'm driing somethign with a ranged attack will hit me. Or it'll not show up on your screen untill it's right next to you due to lag and land in a melee attack. or it'll just destroy your bike. Then kill you.

Or how about that fun phenomenon when aggros spawn right at your havesters/factories when your sitting there setting them up etc? I've had that happen too. Currently I can wear armor, and even if I'm not buffed I can usually take a hit or two. pop a pixie and some vercupti and get the hell out of there alive. After CU? Hell i wont even be able to -get there-. And just forget about getting wookiee armor resources (unless these get changed) unless your master Combat proff/Crafter. Which some are just because fo the problems there are right now with all the billions of agro NPCs spawning everywhere. Personally I dont want to have to grind out a master combat proff just so I can keep crafting.

And sure I could just buy it from some one who harvests resources. Hell I do that right now. But you know what? All these resource suppliers dont allways mine the stuff I want. And alot of those resoruces I want are the latest greatest Armor resource X. Or at least better than what I currently have. Or jsut as good what have you.

So as I said. I can see docs needing armor, And BE's too. But I ALSO see a very strong need for -some- sort of armor for crafters that will protect against both ranged and melee attacks enough that at least buffed you could take 2-3 hits and get away. Cause usually if i check the combat log that's how many they'll land. Especially on Yavin or Dathomir or Endor.

Hell while out surveying on Dathomir today I out and got a buff just cause of all the nasty stuff that tried to kill me whle I was putting harvesters on some really nice intrusive ore for armor. That ONLY Is spawning on Dathomir. I avoid these plannets when I can. But you cant allways. And -that- is why crafters need some sort of defences. I dont care what they are ultimately. But they -are- needed.

Here is an alternate idea for armor certifications: allow the use of most armor, but if the person is wearing more than one piece they are not certed for, they have no run capability (and they dont get the encumbrance and other modifiers that accrue when they are certed for the armor). They can still operate a vehicle normally, but as soon as they get off, they will have to walk

How did this thread get SO off topic? I've read every message trying to find the answers to legitimate ON-topic questions asked 8 pages ago only to find all this semantic (fantasy v. fiction) non-sense that belongs somewhere else. The outstanding relevant questions are still:

1) How do multiple professions armor mitigation stack?

e.g CH and Ranger both get Battle Armor mitigation stats ... if you are both do they stack?

2) Does weapon choice affect armor choices / effectiveness?

e.g the TKA / X combo

In my example, I am rifleman, part ranger, part CH ... does a template like that get choices between Recon armor and Battle when equiped with rifle or just Recon?

What if I have my rifle and my pet out do I have a choice of either? If so, does the part Ranger + part CH mitigation stack on the Battle Armor to get we somewhere close to what a master in either of those would get?

As a ranger and a rifleman I'm a little worried about armor because ranged defenses for rifleman (with recon) don't do much against creatures that like to charge and pound my butt melee once they have found me (if they live that long).

To say that we shouldn't stick to Star Wars continuity because this is an MMORPG is crazy. Do you know how many people are here ONLY because it is Star Wars? Do you know how many people only stat because it's Star Wars?

This game woud've never had near the subsciption numbers it did if it didn't do it's best to follow the Star Wars storyline. As it's strayed, it's lost a lot of the Star Wars fans (which could account for close to 1 million revolving accounts if they would cater this game first and foremost to Star Wars fans, imo). Thise are the people that would've stuck through this game no matter how many bugs, issues it had because it was done for Star Wars fans BY Star Wars fans-neither of this is true now.

The players that are just here because it's an MMORPG, for the most part, would've still left when the next "killer ap" came around-but not the Star Wars fans.

If we see that the devs are fisrt and foremost trying to let us "Live the Saga" we know and love, as opposed to making MMORPG #568, we would give them the benefit of the doubt because we'd know that first nd foremost, they are here to grow the Star Wars universe.

Pick up Reading Comprehension for Dummies. You need it. I never said we shouldn't stick to SW continuity because this is an MMORPG - what I WAS getting at is that if a decision becomes a toss up between SW Continuity and functional, balanced gameplay, the LATTER should win EVERY TIME. In SW continuity, a Jedi can cut through a person with one swing of their lightsaber - how balanced and fun would this game be if we stuck to continuity there, huh? Only fun for the people who want to have it at others' expense. When playing a game, EVERYTHING should be balanced. Continuity should be adhered to, but not at the cost of unbalancing the game. So like I said, learn Reading Comprehension, smart @$$.

I guess the main reason I am so optimistic, is because I was actually here when they opened up these forums (on the horrendous old software, lol), and paid careful attention and offered a ton of input into this game, and right now, I can tell you the CURB is what was intended for SWG from the get-go.

The problem is that the devs were forced to rush out a game still technically in beta (thanks to damn Lucasarts), and then rather than try to fix the game from there properly, they tried just to make it playable until the game took on a life of its own, and didn't even resemble the original intended game.

This CURB is what was ORIGINALLY intended, but with the devs a few years older and wiser, and some refinements on the original system to make tactics count. SWG was always meant to be a tactical MMORPG - the fact that they were forced to publish screwed things up from the get-go, and until this CURB, they have never seemed to recover, and focused more on making players happy than putting together a solid game.

Sounds nice, but the problem is, you can't make everyone happy, you screwed the game up even more, and people have left because the game is screwed up.

Now they are fixing the game, and the heck with the whiners, which is what they should have done in the first place.

I am recognized on Radiant as making some of the best, if not THE BEST RIS armor on the entire server. So who in the blue hell are you?

ROFL if you dont know my characters on radiant you are a NUB. Awesome, you can make RIS armor stuff that is absolutely useless in PvP and PvE. Go back to your hole you rat and make your "collectible" and "useless"armor. I bet you can make the BEST bone armor on radiant though, now thats an achievement huh? Since you suck at the game you think everyone should suck.I hate to say you make sh1t RIS armor, holocron and sena make hella better RIS then you nOOb.
