It requires a VAST VAST amount of varied resources to produce items.
Indeed. This is one of the more frustrating AND one of the more intriguing aspects of being a Weaponsmith. Constantly monitoring the current resource spawns, keeping track of what you currently have vs. what is newly available, managing lots for harvesters, and finally producing the best weapons around - that's what makes Weaponsmithing so satisfying to me.
It took me a good six to eight months of careful resource collecting before I was able to compete with the other Kauri weaponsmiths in terms of quality on most weaons. And I still can't make a top-notch FWG5 after being at it for over a year.
I consider this a good thing.
11pt WS ..... 5mil
12pt WS .... 20mil
True WS with good resources..... lots
Crafting 354 max jawas that get sliced to 417? Priceless!!!
Yeah, 10pt ws with good resources > 12pt ws with crap resources. Grinding to MWS is about 1/10th the grind to be a good ws. Its a long long road

Yeah, I did come into WS kind of blind. But I'm going to stick with it. I had millions of units of resources before I became a master weaponsmith, but none that were very good. So now I'm working at building up my resource base. In a month or two I imagine I'll have a good stockpile of the bare necessities. I'm looking forward to it, it seems like this could be fun.
Sounds like you are in it for the long haul.
Don't get upset over us trying to talk you out of it. We see sooooooo many WS hopefuls posting about making it and how they will rule the economy and a week later give up.
Tips:
- Download Fooman's Tool to help you track resources.
- Start planning how many Factories you will need and the lots to place them.
- Read all the tips on making weapons.
- Don't make any Scythe's, Hacks, Berserkersor unique weapons until you've made One Thousand normal weapons!
You don't want to waste the special resources or schematics. - Get a spot in a high traffic mall or area.
- Master Merchant to get planetary map options.
- "Storage" It will become the bane of your existance! I have a Storage Vendor, 3 houses and factories. Still have trouble keeping up with everything. I loose suff all the time!! lol
- Be prepared for the "Questions you never ask a Weaponsmith."

i believe tho after a while, you will pretty much cap out and really not need to worry about resources if you manage them right. case and point, after every single resource u have is say, 950+ oq, then theres really not much room for improvement. take doc for instance, 999 oq avian meat with 500 pe will make a big difference compared to say 950 with 500 pe. when making say, abph, 950 oq polymer isnt much, if any worse, than 999 oq stuff. i guess the biggest point is to know what u have, know what you need, and know what the 3 or 4 best to ever spawn are of the given resource.
