Thread: Thunderheart, would these two simple fixes solve SOE's database problems? No flame, a sincere idea.

If they really want to save space in the database, they should change how merchants work too. You should only need 1 display item for sale, and having a factory crate in the storeroom that the same seriel number item is pulled from when a sale is made. The last sale sells the display item.

Not only would that be more efficient on the database, it would be much friendlier from a merchant/customer standpoint so they aren't searching through your 25-50 laser rifles to find the T21's below it. If you were able to have a stack in the crate of up to 1000 on top of that, it would really address a huge number of the database problems!!!

This could probably be coded with the change to allow the contents of bags to be visible on the vendor. A bit more tricky and maybe, but it might seriously help the speed at which vendors and the bazaar initialize.

The original idea of larger stacks of resources and in crates could really help DB bloat from my limited understanding of the way stacks of items are kept by the DB (based on anecdotal notes from various dev posts from beta to present). For those who think that we would have the same number of crates as before with more stuff in them, remember that there is still a cost per item (either monetary or resource-wise depending on where you are in the supply chain) associated with each crate. That should keep the numbers down some.

I've never looted multiples of the same junk item from a corpse. Are you guys saying tha each barrel, scale etc is an individualitem and they don't stack even if they have the same serial number? If that's true then no wonder the DB is bloated. If it has the same stats and serial number it should stack, period. Do that and only keep the stats of one item, the others are all multiples of that item and only count as one bit to the whole cost of storing the data for that item in the DB. *shakes his head*

This idea should be tested on TC and then the Devs can see how the database load changes, if at all

Great idea

Awesome idea.

the only problem is that the devs rarely make time for these small mudane changes that would help the community so much cause they are too busy working there way down to Pikeman on the "to nerf" list

No negative posts? Are you all master weaponsmiths? Its obvious that yall want this change simply for greedy reasons, Why not just make it so you cant store so many damn items on those vendors of yours? You do realize that if resources and craftables are stacked like this the little man will be completely wiped out of business? Dont you see that its hard enough for non corporation crafters to make sales? There needs to be more focus on personal touch to crafting not more bulk production. And this is what they are doing with stuff like geo loots and all sorts of other looted powerups that force yall to craft your weapons the real way. I am only being this negative because its engrossing how everyone jumped on this post like its the next best thing since people started making fake Natalie Portman Nvdes (not sure if that word is filtered)

Beautiful Idea

I wish we could pick the crate size.. this would let those of us who sell things by the crate vary the amount (Can you imagine selling crates of 200 power ups instead of 25? so the person doesnt have to buy 4 at a time to last for a day?)

Limiting the vendor items only causes one thing: More Money for SOE. Mega crafters will need more vendors to sell their wares. What do we do when we need more? get yet ANOTHER account. Another 15/mo for SOE

make a crate of T21's lately? how about Rocket launchers ???? though not! you obviously do not craft a lot or you would have a 1000 run shcematic or two of quite a few things already!

The personal touch generaly means you waste resource's time and effort and that ultimately is going to drive your costs up.

I am the little man. I run my business solo have done since it started and unless I find another reliable smith to enter into partnershiop with I will do so until I quit WS! I will holler at the top of my lungs if I though it would get this thru too why you ask?? I have 120+ resource stacks in my shop 4 vendors (one is not mine) and then some crates of rweapons I dont want cluttering up my vendors! No my bank has loot components and spare stacks of 100k resources and is curently at 78! my second! yes thats right second house is full of compents in crates (over 100)plus all the little knick knacks I would love to store/display in my shop!

2 house plus one factory = 5 lots out of my 10! anything that reduces the need for me to take up space storing essential items for my craft gets my vote! I might be able to have a shop which is decorated for a change (when is the last time you saw that??).

I don't honestly see how this can adversly affect even the small smith? it won't affect output for larger smiths because it never did before, you can do a run of 100 RL (or 99 T21's)if need be the crates still fit into the input hopper etc. the gate to output is prodiction potential which is gated by factory time!

I just have to say, I've heard a lot of bad things about you here on the forums Malfunction, but haven't had any experience with you personally and after a post like that I'd say those people don't know what they're talking about, and spend WAY to much time on the forums and not enough time in game (or in real life for that matter). That has to be one of the best ideas I've heard from anyone on the forums, and the way you presented it was extremely professional and respectable.

The only argument I can see for this not working out is that it's not "realistic" to be able to carry ridiculous amounts of resources, but then again it's not realistic to carry as much as you can now. I think it's a great idea, and hope that it works out!

And just one last thought: Malfunction, we need more people like you on the forums. People willing to express their ideas in well thought out posts, giving solutions and not just pointing out the problems with the system over and over then insulting the devs and SOE for not finding a solution. Keep up the good work!

Great idea !! I can see a few reasons for keeping the resource count to 100K and the final product counts where they are currently. Uping the resource countwould allow a bit more hoarding to occur. So if you want to keep 1 million of a resource, it costs you 10 item spaces currently, no big deal really. The final product counts for items like powerups are really meant to limit the USERS of the powerups, forcing them to return to town to replenish their supplies. This helps keep the money flowing thru the game, also this lets new crafters sell their items sooner since there is a constant market for them.

BUT for component items, I am really behind having those limits raised to a more managable number. If 1000 is too high , what about component crates of 100 each. Just helping with the component crate counts would be a huge step in the right direction and would help to clean up the database. I hope Thunderheart takes time to read this thread.

When you're the best at what you do, there will always be those who take cheap shots at you on the forum. Everybody responds to them differently. I don't take any crap from anybody in-game or on the forums. There is nothing I can do about the way players percieve my responses on a forum or my actions and decisions in-game, and I don't care what they say or do, it's beyond my control.

I accept this and this is why I hold nothing back when I "respond" to trolls on the Radiant forum.

When it comes to development idea, I take a step back from the character of "Malfunction" and present my ideas as I would think a dev would like to hear them. Clear, complete and considerate. I have had suspicions for some time now that things are not all that rosey for SOE. They pretty much have killed the game with so many nerfs and REALLY messed up with the original path to Jedi, aka, "the profession grind".

Tonight I responded to SOE's position on the Publish 7 crafting changes, you can review my comments here:

I was not as nice as I was in this thread on the WS forum.
