Thread: Disgruntled Weaponsmiths Thread
A major issues with these temp schems. Is we cannot deliver them to more people. This has always been the premise up until now. A smith works hard to provide for the customers. Tracking down resources that might have ten more points, or going into hell holes to get another three percent of yeild. This whole system turns a weaponsmith into a short order cook. Not someone who is striveing to get another few more points of damage or trying to balance the ham costs on weapons.
To make matters worse I make you two scythes. You promptly go out and sell it for a million credits. The person who buys it from you has no clue that I put in alot of quality effort to make it the best I could. I mean what exactly are the weaponsmiths bringing to this table. Short of utter dependence on uber looters, and basically just serveing to assemble the weapon. Where is our reward in all this. If the devs are just looking to tinker out a few weapons in the game. Then why not make the loot harder to come by and give us all a schematic that might last for two weeks.
Weaponsmiths have had virtually the same deal going since day one. If you bring the loot I make you one I make me one. That way I have a way to better my reputation you have a good free gun. More often now its becomeing i make the weapons you sell them. I get no recognition.
I prefer recognition to money. I make good weapons for adulation. Where is that in all of this. Heck with this system not only is it harder to make better, because they use new oddball ingredients, but exactly where is the incentive to make them well. How long before people start useing garbage on temp schems.
I've been a master WS for since mid september now, and I welcome these new loots. I have two store, make modest ( not large ) profits, and have built up a rapport with several customers. I for one do not enjoy after so many months going out and spending 2 hrs planet hopping looking for new material spawns. Why not go to web sites and have them do that for me? Becuase that's lazy. Most people that play this game are very lazy, afk macroers, macro grinders, I've never used an afk or crafting macro, thats my choice, others are welcome to do so.
Anyway, I've made hundreds, possibly thousands of factory runs, now have between 40-50 million in top notch resources of every kind, and love making new weapons if I have the time. If Joe Schmoe asks me to make stuff for him, I charge them 10k per weapon, they supply the components I don't have ( ie cubes, schematics ). I've made tons of money off this. If you think someone is just going to re-sell what you're making them, either don't make it, or charge them 100k to do so. After a while fac runs get boring. As for them not selling the schematics? Just charge them schematic uses instead of cash. If I make disruptors for someone, I tell them I use 2 uses, they get three, they don't like it, cya later. Be firm, but be fair, or you'll lose customer. Anyway, just my opinion. Can't wait to start making beserker rifles.

Then charge more for the weapon. If you don't care about the money, then put your name in the weapon's name field so whoever ends up buying it knows you're the one who made it. Lots of smiths do this.

EXACTLY!
Ive already been accused by some people that I made these weapons for of cheating them. They have no clue what the stats on the loot schematic weapons should be, but since its loot it MUST be at least 1.2 speed and 800 max dmg. (little sarcasm there).
Ive been accused by a couple of people of cheating them because the stats werent as high as they expected. I asked "What range did you think it would be?" Answer: "I dont know, but better than that!" Me: "Have you seen one better than mine?" Answer: "No, but its uber loot! It HAS to be better than this!".
I still remember the first Krayt weapon I made. Guy brought me 30 max dmg tissue and asked me to make him (no joke, literally) 2.0 speed, 600 max dmg scatter pistol with it. Of course the results were woefully below that and I was accused of stealing his tissue and making him a "crappy" regular pistol.

In a MMORPG there are going to be immature and ignorant players. If you don't want to deal with them, then don't. Put them on your ignore list. Sure, maybe they'll trash your name to their friends. But when you consider that their friends are likely to be just as immature and ignorant as they are, you'll see that they are probably doing you a favor by referring their friends to some other poor smith.
This is the attitude I've been forced to adopt, and the conclusion in the last sentence is one I've also reached. The people that are immature enough to make my /addignore list probably won't bad mouth me to anyone I care to be dealing with anyway.

This is one reason that I ask for schematic uses vice credits when people ask me to make them rare items. I would much rather be known for having rare weaponry available via periodic auctions and having a high-quality well-stocked vendor than be known as the richest guy on the server (which I most certainly am not).
For my part, I like the loot schematics. I just wish they weren't so silly rare. 35 million for a Geonosian sonic blaster schema on Scylla? **edit** is up with that? That's just nutty.
Market price is another word for how high the demand is and how high the gouge can be accomodated. I personally dislike ebayers, and credit dupers. Add scam artists on that aswell. Is it fair that one person works hard and has a million while these people have fifty million. They will always outbid the little guy. Do I actually want to reward cheaters, or help out honest players trying their hardest to do the right thing.
This is just another system that gives confort to the criminals. Promotes camping, and exploits.

No doubt that credit dupers have seriously distorted the economy and I think paying real money for fake credits is incredibly cheesy and stupid. But these are things outside of our control. It's up to SOE to ban the dupers and Ebayers. Besides, the economic impact of rare weapons made from limited use schematics will be the same whether there are dupers/Ebayers or not. We're still talking about high demand for a limited resource.

Is it really beyond our control, or do we say things like that. So that we do not have to face the fact that we feed into it. How often do you see something that you know was inexpensive to make but is being sold at fifty times that. The reason that there is a ebay and credit dupeing problem. Is that it actually has benefits. When we gouge as high as the sky eventually we make doing these things more incentful. If you could go to ebay and get a million credits, and then found out that it was twenty times what you needed. Would you go back to ebay.
We the weaponsmiths are a very large part of what is driveing this. With ten million credit guns. So that being said we are promoteing a bad mentality, and degenerateing the game into a a real world economy. Maybe if swg wanted to do something truely innovateive what they need is looted certifications. The weapons still limited, no black market, and the smiths could actually try to make great weapons like this.
Simply have the combat profession immediately learn the certification when they pick it up. This would be a far more ideal situation. Instead of makeing the economy a gougers paradise.
If we take a stem back and don not just look at the combated to weaponsmith relations but include the in game economy as well, upper loot makes absolutely no sense at all.
Example:
The system gives a limited use schematic to a combat character.
The combat character sells the schematic to a weapon smith
The weapon smith makes the weapon.
The weapon smith sells the limited use schematic weapon to the combat character.
The only way a weapon smith can get credit is by selling to combat charters (no high paying crafting missions), so the only way to afford limited use schematics would be to increase prices, and when the prices are increased the combat character wand more for the schematic and so on.
A trade where the combat character provide 2 times the components and the weaponsmith the resources and they each get a weapon can be broken down to the components being sold for half the final weapon cost.
For every new loot component or limited use loot schematic SOE adds, the crafter will have to further increase prices. Even if that is just by demanding even more credit for making them.
In the end it would be better if we bought all these things from NPC's, then it would be a luxury credit sink.
On the other subject raised in this topic, I do not se why we hat to explain everything to our customers. Yes if I go to a shop in RL I expect the salesperson to be able to explain everything, but that is the JOB of a salesperson. It is the WORK he or she does to get the money needed to have fun.
I on the other hand is PAYING to play this game, and as such should not have to WORK in it as well to have fun. Yes I will gladly use al the time necessary to explain anything to a friend, but why should I be expected to do so to a complete stranger (that is what the newbie helper tag is for).

Your the smith, your providing a service to your customer, its thier right to be educated byt he maker on thier products. Sure its a game, but if you want to successfully run a business inside this game, then you should follow good customer service. Not everyone will know that it takes 11 tissues to make a krayt t21, as not everyone is a smith. And seeing as how most smiths on any given server can make all around the same level of weaponry, and money is really of zero concern as money can be made quickly and easily by any chracter of any profession, its the customer service your provide and your professional image which will help draw in customers and retain existing clientell.
Do you have to provide good customer service? No, but your only hurting yourself, well your business by not. If you just want to chrun out weapons and not answer questions thats up to you.....as we each play for differnt reasons. But business wise, its a bad choice.
Your customer is also PAYING to PLAY the game and not WORK, so they shouldnt have to KNOW what a weaponsmith HAS to KNOW anyway to make their weapons in the firstplace.
**Sarcasim Off**
You can play the game how you want to, but I'm playing the game to run a business. I take great pride in my Customer service, weaponry, and everything els eI've accomplished in SWG thus far. Which is why I believe what I do, I am not saying you have to do exactly what I do, this is fun for me, if it wasnt I wouldnt have lasted as long as I have (Started grinding Weaponsmith mid July 2004, and mastered early August). Sometimes it feels like work yes, but The little bit it is like real work is worth the pay off of knowing I am aiding to hundreds of other players to make sure they are having a good time.
Everybody has their own playing style, everybody has their own personality, so I have nothing against those who do things differently than I do, there is plenty of room for all types, so it really is no big deal. You do what you want, I do what we want, and we go our own seperate ways.

I dont think anyone is saying that every player that uses a weapon should know the ins and outs of weapons as well as a dedicated weaponsmith does, though it IS to their benefit if they are.
