Best advice is use swgcraft, and talk to other smiths. Sometimes you can find out if a resource is good or bad without even checking it yourself. Also it is always best if you do your own harvesting. Remember you know better then most what you need, and where to put the most effort. Use those survey droids once every few days to check out the planets you do not want to buy tickets too. Cheaper then going and finding nothing new. Some resources might not be worth your time harvesting use the bizarre and look for resources under 2 credits.
In the end you will find that you spend about four hours a week hunting down and harvesting resources.

I buy most of my resources now, but will still harvest a few things. Last spawn of Iroluun, Tzigoc, I dropped 8 heavies on it, because God knows when it will be back.
