Average stockpile is 300K plus. When you first become master its easy to get overwhelmed at the ammount of things you need. A person may be tempted to just get small amounts of any material that is out there, and in the long run this will hurt you (unless they completely nerf all the new resources so nothing takes specific materials, but thats another story). I would suggest using your full harvesting capability (lots) on one single resource for as long as possible. 6-8 harvs should give you a decent shot at getting 300K or more of something, but some materials you will need more of.
I use ISS-SWG.com, it also uses info from SWG, but its a direct listing for any server and highlights the stats that are above 900 in red. Makes it easier to find out what is the best material to go after.
To start crafting I would suggest something easier, like swords, power hammers, or other melee weapons that take only one part (cores), as this will be easiest to find and then make decent weapons with. Ranged is tougher because to compete you need good materials for not only each type of gun you want to make, but the componants as well. To make any blaster weapon worth a damn, you will need adv blaster power handlers, and those take 5 specific materials alone, all high OQ. Then there is the chance they use scopes, again advanced being the only real choice for quality weapons, and some take stocks which increase the damage overall, so people get used to that as a standard.
With the CU coming, like others said, best thing to do is just start stockpiling whatever you can and wait to see how the cards fall. There may be some weapons that are great now and wont be worth a damn then, so working to achieve the ability to craft them could end up being a waste of time, and you may miss out on something better for materials.
As a general rule, just about anything with a high OQ/CD is good.
