Hang in there Trystram!
Your being a MWS/Smuggler gives you some great adavntages regardless of loot prices. ANY baseline weapon you make is potentially better than other weaponsmith's baseline. You need to exploit that. A well stocked sliced vendor will keep people coming back again and again. Plus, for you it's better than loot because you can offer sliced all the time!
As for me, it's been months since i've paid for loot. My guildies pass it along to me for free and I have some great regular customers who do the same in exchange for some great deals, free enhanced weapon builds, and first look at exceptional weapons that pop out of my station. Customer service goes a long way in taking the sting out of loot prices. In time, you will pay less for loot because your loyal customers want YOU to have it.
Another thing you can do is make weapons for customers in exhange for the loot schematic they bring you. Trust me, people love not paying 500k for a scythe. Take advantage of that. That's one more schematic you didn't have at the start of the day.
Frankly, there are many ways to avoid the inflated prices of loot. These are only a few.
And for God's sake, stay out of the galaxy trade forums. It will only depress you. People pay outrageous prices for utter crap there anyway.
Good luck,
- Madrigal

Interesting thread. I agree with Felton that I haven't seen inflation for regular weapons, but there has been a lot of "reaching" by the newer weaponsmiths for looted items. If you look at the Tempest trade forums, any time looted items are listed with a buyout price, invariably someone fairly new to the game will "step up". I don't see the older weaponsmiths on the server doing that.
Now, not to say there aren't problems on the horizon - there are entirely too many credits floating around on Tempest, and I'm sure it's worse on larger servers. If we don't get an effective credit sink sometime soon, all of the kiddies will be running around demanding only acklay-krayt-whatevers, and that will be a big problem...

And how, exactly, do you propose that happen?

I mine my own resources and my own radioactive (Usually), I will run around to the various resource shop from time to time to replace resources I'm out of and can't find a spawn for....or if I see a resource that would really improve a weapon or two. If I find a resource that make s a weapon better..then I'll buy the resource and then raise my prices for the new weapons. If my customers don't like it..they can buy the ones with lower stats...but that never happens. IfI buy resources just because I run out and can't find a replacement....I'll usully not adjust prices for that, I'll just take the hit. 80% of my customers are fellow citizens and guildmates anyway, so I have great communication with them.
My WS isn't rich, but he serves the purpose of helping my commiunity as well as providing weapons to my other character.....so mytime (and money) is well spent.

I usually just buy all loot stuff on the auction tab, the prices would be much better if only the loots dropped more often. Twice my friend and i have gone krayt hunting and after 2 hours of searching usually only find one spawn and sometimes null. The only reason i will buy loot items is if i can make a good profit off of it and the risk/benefit factor isn't extreme. Usually i have my clients provide all the loot and schems, then i will make the weapon for super cheap or free. Krayt tissues i bid on are starting to get really high creds, at a point i discontinue to bid because buying the krayt tissues would make the weapon cost so high i wouldn't like to see someone buy it for such an outrageous price. With all the loots capabilities and the high priced missions out there, a pure fighter can make a nice chunk, i think it is unbalanced compared to a crafter who sells wares at good prices for good quality.
