Igot a nice customer base from when i did 10point melee weapons. I even started selling weapons and bone armor on the mos eisley bazaar that's how i was able to get some grinding resources. I did it without a guild giving money or somebody else. The bazaar is your best bet or selling loot. But the bazaar is theway to go if you really want to be a good weaponsmith you need to learn prices quality and stuff. And make a nice list of resources you will need. And then just start slowly in the melee part and get a name and sales.
I now have a good customer base that brings me loot and wants me to do the loot made weapons. And i'm now a 11 point(11,7 hehe) Best thing you can do is offer a great service. You need a name people need to know it and your service. And some people say a 10point can't compete with a 12point but those people are wrong you can. You just have to find out how and where to sell your weapons. Some people will only want the best there is. I'm one of those people i went and got the best spawns that i was able to get my hands on and i spend a fortune on the resources. I did that with mokk/janta missions.

I am only a 10pt and I do as much business as any 12pter on my server. It is about resources, and time to get a client base. I also start to offer cash back bonuses to clients that recommend me or shop often with me. No more than 10% but it gives them incentive to stick with me!
Something else... when you're doing a job for someone, BE ORGANIZED! I learned this one the hard way. I pissed off my first custom weapon's buyer by spending a good 1.5 hours just to get my resources together o.-
