I think they are about the same, the ostrine is used in more weapons though so you will definitely need this more unless you only do melee weapons.
You might want to consider harvesting the one with best stats
Ostrine needs OQ only and can go as high as 1000
Desh needs UT only and is usually around 350 for good stuff

if you don't already have some of both...place your harvester (hopefully a BER 13) on like a 70 spot of the desf for a day to get youself around 8k of it...then go for the ostrine, you need some desh, but you can usually make it last for a while depening on how many VK's and such you intent to make. also if one's complete junk i wouldm't even bother with it.

Ok, er...ok, the desh has 350 UT. I have not sampled the ostrine yet. My harvester is BER 4
i can't afford a good one from an architect. I just got novice weaponsmith. (8k exp right now, not grinding)

A weaponsmiths greatest friend is a backpack full of harvesters! My advise to you is concentrate on earning a few good harvies so you can stockpile what you'll need after becoming master

Good advice indeed. If you're serious about weaponcrafting, go to swgcraft.com and make a list of all the resources you will need. Note the stats that are important for each resource (like UT for the desh copper). Then, when you're out surveying, you'll be able to see which new spawns have good stats in the resources you need. Over time, as you build up an inventory, you'll also know when something is better than what you already have...
SOE, whether intentionally or not, has made weaponcrafting a challenge in terms of resource management. If you're serious about the profession, you'll get to know your server's resources intimately...

you have pretty much 2 options
1) get your self with a guild. There are alot of good people out there, and some guilds don't have a regular WS. You can ussaly work out somthing like future discounts on weapons for help now. That can vary from the guild arc giving ya a deal on harvesters, to loans, to use of extra lots, or a combination of the 3. If a serious guild sees that you are seriously planning on doing WS it would be a good investment for them to help you.
2) If for some reason option 1 don't work out (no guilds with openings, or you are a solo player or what ever reason) you'll want to pick up a level 4 combat skill in either Brawler or Marksman (this will come in handy later anyways on harvester runs), this gives you a higher mission level ability and you can start doing survey missions for cash. It's been a while since I've done them , but I belive if you can get in a solo group you may be able to pull missions upto or just over 2k. Find a High % spot (75 or better) of a gas or chemical or somthin about 1100-1200m away from the terminal. Pick 2 missions of the same type resource ride your bike or run out to you saved spot hop off and hit your survey button. Both missons will pop and Bingo 4k in the bank. for maybe a 2min round trip if you have a bike. The hardest part is searching for 2 of the same missions that are of the right type. This is by no means a way to get rich but it works, and depending on how the mission terminal gods treat you you can earn 30k or more in a hour. That should be about enough to buy a BER10 medium harvester. And In my opinion untill you get firmly established and self seficint you should stick with the medium harvesters. They are more cost effective than Heavys. Heavys cost 50% more to run for only a 30% increase in production. and when you are counting your pennies every savings you can get helps.
