Thread: Experimenting is getting to be a real pain lately...

Well, I give up. I have just spent the last 90min making Powerhammers in an attempt to get one with all greats or possibly even an amazing result in the exp. phase. Since PHs are such big sellers I like to have the best, and a recent spawn of high SR kammris meant I could probably better my old ones (137-465 5.4). I grabbed a crate of 25cores and got to work.
Out of that crate of 25, on every single occasion I managed to hit a moderate on the first roll each time. I tried doing 3 boxes (my normal method for melee) then 2 then 1. Out of those first 25 at least 20 had a moderate on that first roll while at least 5 had fails and I got 3 CFs.
My old stack of high SR polysteel is dwindling during all these failed attempts. On some of the PHs I am missing the highest possible stats by maybe only 2-3 dmg or 0.1 spd. I saved 9 to put on bazaar.
So I go grab another crate of cores and decide to press on. I get an new tool in case the death decay is messing with the rolls.
Same thing for the first 10 rolls again.
Honestly, I know we all have times like this, and I can at least console myself that its not scythes or disruptor rifles I'm making, but something is seriously wrong when you can craft 40 times in a row and not get 4 great successes once out of 36 experimentsand max the bars out.
What with the changes now being considered (and on TC as we speak) this is just going to get worse not better. The food they've introduced to help guard against fail rates doesn't work, or so I'm told. I don't live in a research centre (a thinly veiled money sink) as both myself and the 2 armoursmiths were getting worse results for the 2 weeks we had it.
Why does this game strive to excel at the crafting system but at the same time make it so difficult, nay annoying so much of the time?
Why as masters are we so prone to bad rolls like this? With the changes coming and the recent tripling of tellhell for loot made weapons, I am coming very close to just dumping the craft I have grown to love over the last 5 months. I can make more money dealing resources and having a combat template. Sure, its never about the money, but when the enjoyment of smithing is gone what else is there?
I've had this same problem. If I get three moderates or worse in a row, I find something else to do for a half an hour or so and then come back to it. That usually helps. I live in a Metropolis with the manufacturing center upgrade, so it doesn't happen very often.
Okies,2 things that seriously help... Being in a city with Research Center on... And Bespin port (chef made) with the Bio Engineer Food supplement. Research center +15% to experiementation success, Bespin Port (with bio engy supplement) +10% experimentation bonus. So far using both of those for each experiment, i've only had 1 moderate success when doing a custom weapon, out of hundreds of experiments.

Yeah, research center, that's it. What did I say, manufcturing? I need some sleep. Thanks Stonecloud.
Yeah OK but we've tried that route and noticed very little positive aspects (this was a while back) and in fact noticed a higher rate of actual crit fails, as opposed to an increase in experimental success. I still view this bonus as a money sink, and one that the few crafters in the city are unwilling to bankroll (its hard enough to impose taxes).
Why should crafters be even forced down this route?
Statistically the chances of me not getting a decent roll out of all those PHs, are lower than the chances of me getting 3-4 all greats. Just makesno sense, and is another nail in the coffin of me wanting to continue as a crafter lately, with new and forthcoming changes...
Heads up- I've learned throughout my crafting learning (now MasterWS for a while), to really watch every tiny detail regarding your crafting process. 99% of my work is by custom order only. I'm not a big crate+vendor WS... IMHO weapons made PERSONALLY, add a touch of flavor, and a customer that can choose the name of their own weapon is a truly excited one ![]()
I have noticed something however, that I would LOVE you all to try out, and see if I'm just smoking something that smells funny... Try crafting 3 items, of just about anything (3 of the same, back to back). Use the same resources, same schematic, everything! What I think I've stumbled on, is that on the THIRD item... my # of "Great" successes increases dramatically (even get an amazing now and then). I've started to suspect, that this is a "hidden" part of the experimentation formulae. Kinda like aiming before you shoot... 2 attempts to "warm up", and then your 3rd attempt is really good ![]()

I'm NOT in a PC, and 9/10 are usually great successes for me. Please note, Decay Resist on your resources, ALWAYS affects the "failure", or "quality" chance, for experimentation... I point this out here, since I have NEVER seen it mentioned on the WS boards... (it used to be all over the medic boards, however!)
So... GREAT resources (HIGH DR, if you can...) + High bonus crafting station + High bonus crafting tools... = MUCH better chances of greats/amazings. The bonus of a research town can't hurt either... Also, when you apply my (3rd try is better) method, your chances seem to go even higher!

Another thing to try is just after a morning reset as well. I've done this a couple of times on the weekends and it seems to work nicely, if you can get up earlier or have time in the morning to try it. Also check and see whats going on around in the area your crafting in. I usually have the ping checker up and if there's too much activity in the surrond I tend to hold off from major crafting exp. Now there's no real proof this maybe the case, but it couldn't hurt to try it out.

Is it better to experiment one point at a time or to throw all the points in at the same time? I tried it both ways earlier today on some component and the end result was the same. Throwing all the points down in one use means just two chances of failing as where doing them one-by-one means 10 chances at failing.
A friend said its better to go one by one though... So which is it?
