Thread: How to make our profession more complex and engaging

Ive been thinking for the last couple of days since the resource buff was announced. And some of the arguments for introducing it was to level the playing field and while I disagree with this being done as I think there should be a fair bit of work required to become a true master (stats and knowledgewise) I came up with the thought that our profession needs more than striving for better stats.


Im a firm believer in the notion that MMORPG's are about continually bettering yourself and thus there needs to be new challenges to take on at all times otherwise the player stagnates and the game grows boring. This is not a game thatis made to be won, nor should it ever become it.


The point with this long introduction is that I would like us aas a community to come up with ideas for new challenges. I dont believe more enhancers are the answer, but Im not trying to restrict anyone a free brainstorm with all ideas to be compiled into a list so we as a community can return to it and expand the ideas.

I think if we present the devs with well thoughout and easyly read ideas we will have a better chance of getting attention when our time comes.


Myideas are still veryvague, buthere is a small list:



  1. Reverse engineering ofskilltapes (should work a bit differently than shipwright, but basically some kind of turning 5 skilltapes with same kind of stats into 1 weapon enhancer, that could be added to differentweapons. This would of course require an extra slot added to weapons, but it would be neat)

  2. Reverse engineering of loote weapons (This could work like the shipwright, which I believe takes the best statsof the different items andapplies them to thefinal product (corract me if Im wrong I havent tried this myself)

  3. Reintroduction of the Critical Success which should be able to take the weapon made over the caps (would be very nice if the weapon got a title added to it like Epic or the old exceptionals and Legendary

  4. Some kind of exchange for XP into new schematics. or ideally a whole new set of skilltrees. Imagine if your xp could be converted to specialization xp that could be used in another skilltree. with 4 lines 1 for melee, 1 for ranged, 1 for muniton and 1 for customization. The 3 first should grant new schematics for the WS and the last one should make the WS able to choose weapon colour, projectile colour and perhaps damage type? (this kind of extra skillree and specialization would be neat for all the crafting porfessions) The process of mastering the specialization should of course be long and ideally every box should be combined with a quest. Also it would be nice if it was linked to time and not so much to grind as I believe we have enough grinding with mastering The quest could be made like the RIS armour quest and the reward of a box could be one or 2 new schematics


I know the last part is a bit ambitous, but as I said this is free brainstorming Feel free to add all your ideas and let your imagination run free. this is both for fun and to gather all the ideas that could enhance our gameplay immensely

I think trying to work within the system, not trying to change or further complicate code will have a better chance of being implimented


Having said that:


/Brainstorm


building on the RIS model...what abouta series ofquests involving crafting and some combat to encourage cooperative missions. These quests would involve collecting/crafting with collected parts. Each quest would end with the creation of a component with the stats of a looted component, but you build it so you determine it's stats within parameters.


Now these crafted 'uber' components could be either used in the traditional role of a loot enhancerOR (heres the fun part) if a certain number and type of components are collected you could trade them to an NPC somewhere tough (bottom of the DWB) to get a schematic for a new weapon. OR maybe you could take that pile of specific crafted enhancements to somewhere difficult and craft a new weapon (a la jetpack). Make tthe missions difficult enough that it would be an event (worthy of a forum post!!) when one of these new weapons were created. The weapons don't have to be unbalancingly UB3R, but the skin would be cool/unique enough so as to be very desireable.


Something like this might work within existing code, encourage grouping/cooperative play (that's still a priority, right?) and give the older wepsmiths something to do other than scour the forums for uberloot.

HOWEVER, I would still like to see bugs fixed before too much effort is placed into new content. I was helping a newbie last night and I was shocked/ashamed at the number of times I had to explain, "it's a bug, it's supposed to work like XXX...and may in the future, but here's the work-around".

I don't think they'll allow skill tapes to be re'd, but i think another slot could be added on weapons so that a ws could install a AA or CAs (maybe they need to add a newskilltape WA) during crafting or it could be a user accessible slot.

This would be a really good option for Novice and upcoming weaponsmiths that dont have much that they can do to make credits until they hit master.

This would be great as a (very) random occurance during crafting. would give WS something to hope for i dont think they'll allow a weapon to exceed the caps but it could give a weapon that doesn't have elemental an elemental type or somthing along those lines.

New Schematics, and being able to customize Weapon Color,Projectile Color,and Damage Type would be awesome. A quest to obtain these abilities after mastering the profession would be best. Grinding for it would be a pain and just create more issues, they could do it as a veteran reward but not sure if they could tie those to specific professions.






I'd like to see a schematic like the Shipwright's KSE Firespray (perhaps tie it into your reverse engineering above) where we were able to obtain part of a multiple schematic weapon during reverse engineering or crafting. or a RIS type quest where you have to obtain specific components. The reward for these type of quests would have to be a really awesome weapon in order to make it worthwile (not sure if the caps would allow that).


Overall these ideas are good but It would be nice if they fixed the bugs and problems with the profession first.

You got the SW comparison exactly right.. it takes the best stat from each weapon and applies a small fixed % bonus to each stat making it even better

Something I always thought a WS (and AS) should get is further customisation options for time served... The longer you are a WS, the more options open to you... and have each option granted be a random choice so you never knew what was coming each month... Imagine being the first WS on your server to be able to make a Gold T-21

Hehe, this was actually something I was thinking about.


Some sort of "Final Customisation" window on your weapons would be cool. Adding a mounted scope, altering the color of the weapons barrel and stock etc. It wouldnt actually be making the weapons any better but it would allow us to give a little personal touch that it lacking at the moment... especially with some of the weapon graphics (HLR and HLC for example)


Also I like the idea of giving us some sort of quest\s - as we currently have to rely on combat characters to supply us with enhancements and schematics - it would be nice if there was some sort of Schematic quest or Enhancement quest we could do as crafters.

And yeah I would prefer bugfixing aswell, but that doesnt mean we cant dream (I started this thread because even with hte lowering of the resource buff I still feel some of the challenge has been taken away from me, so I made this to try to come up with ideas to renew the challenge )

I love the RIS quest type idea. There could be several - one for each weapon type. Get that sorted and you have a good 2 years content for the weaponsmiths as well as the hunters and looters to get the stuff

Don't get me wrong. I am all for enhancing our gaming experience. But before we start proposing any new ideas lets get our old issues fixed first. Last thing we need to do is add more things that get buged and just pile them ontop of our old issues. Current issues need to be our top priority.

Surely bugged features needs to be adressed first, but theres nothing wrong with brainstorming on ideas of what we would like to see our profession eolve into.


IMO we need to somehow get a picture of what we want with our profession, where we want it to go and why. Because if the community hasa strong feeling about the direction the profession needs to move in, it will be a lot easier for us all to communicate this to the devs.


Im not saying ideas discussed inhere should be proposed to the devs tomorrow, but running our imagination can never hurt
