Thread: A Challenge to you: What is content? Define it:

Reposting to new thread for a larger audience:

I do have an honest question. Many many people talk about "no content" being in the game. I'm not disagreeing or agreeing, but I'm not sure I really understand what people mean. Yeah, the professions have a lot of problems and need help, but what kind of "content" should there be?

I guess when I thought of content I was alwasy thinking from a roleplayer's perspective, so "content" to me meant things of a social nature that make the game a more livable universe. So in that vein, it seems like SWG really has a lot of "content." The economy system is pretty complex, the options for character customization are rich - blah blah blah you've heard me say all this before. I'm not saying it to defend the game. I'm saying that I always thought that "content" were things like player cities and a player driven economy, rich options for characters, a strong social environment (so things like entertainer professions, player housing, PA halls, player owned merchants, etc) were what I defined as "content."

Clearly that is not the definition of other people -- so can you give me some thoughtful examples of what kind of "content" you think should be in the game and isn't? What do you mean when you say that? What would a high content or a rich content game look like?

By the way, this question came up because I hear someone again criticize the game as a "no content" game and I couldn't figure out what they meant by that.

And for comparison, I considered DAoC to have painfully little content for a long time, all the way up until the SI expansion, and even then it was weak. So if you disagree, explain to me why - I just want to understand the other side, that's all.

I think that what people are looking for was a bit more of a "story line". I think that the disapointment of this month's story arc just got people down since we were expecting something a little more out of it. I could be wrong, who can really guess what people are thinking? I agree with you Selwynn, I think the game has good content. I would just like to see the missions for NPCs like at the rebel base being linked slightly more into a full "story". It just seems that most of these missions are unrelated and could just be linked slightly more to give us something to be hoping for, a sort of "end" to a long mission. In other games we start at a beginning and finish at the end, an MMORPG is slightly different since there is no end, it just goes on forever. Game content to me would mean that each of these NPC missions would be like a new beginning and end to a whole game thus giving us some classic RPG style to this open-ended game. If ya don't like the story line in one game, quit it and find another NPC with a mission that you can find entertaining or important. Just a thought, as it is now though, I stillfindfunintalking to friends and the thrill to know that you just brought down a Krayt dragon with your fists. In the future we may get more content, that is one of the grand things about a "living" game, it always changes, devs can add a story if they want to or they can take a story away. At this time though I see nothing that is actually wrong with the game content, just oportunity to add more.

1 I wanted to be able to solo and kill some tuff targets and feel a sense of accomplishment in the Teras Kasi profession.

2 I wanted to to own a ship and navigate space with it.

What I wanted seems simple but apparently I was asking for too much because they have nerfed the Teras Kasi profession bad and they are showing they dont really want Teras Kasi as powerful as they were pre-patch when in Star Wars myth Teras Kasi was powerful enough for to make jedi feared Teras Kasi Artists.

As for space ships to navigate space? Well it seems that the closest a player can get to space is when they look up into the night sky.

Last night I logged out in a dangerous areaon corellia and I did not even care what was going to happen to me *sighs* I really had high hopes for SWG.

i posted this elsewhere and i know you read it

the game has no content in that there isn't anything to keep you playing the PVE game. contrary to what people SAY, they do want to kill yon uber-mob for the "Sparkling sword of death", they want to do a COMPLEX quest (theme parks are broken and have no point, i got to see jabba's bedroom, lame), and they sure as hell want to be able to play their class of choice. in an mmorpg, content is the depth of the "game" part of the game, if you catch what i'm saying. an RPG for a console is said to have "X Hours of Gameplay!" that means, this game has enough content to last you for X hours of straight-through play. developing content is the ongoing process of adding more places to explore, more mobs to kill, more loot to attain, more levels or skill points to grind, etc. the "social" content is entirely up to you, the player. because of the license behind star wars, and the fans it brings, there are a lot more people interested in having a good time socially than playing the game out; ie, a lot less of what you would call power-gamers.

yes, game mechanics fall under content in most people's opinion. as stated previously, roleplaying and socializing are purely up to the players, you create your own content to that end.

Working missions, i.e. npc generated ones. Rebel theme park etc.

Badges for completion of said missions.

Working pve battefields.

Static points of interest, klicknick temple, droid caves in the volcano on lok, nightsister caves, with actual loot drops. Rare items, etc.

Vehicles, be it space or land.

Random generated content spawns (or at least more of them)

The promised storyline, so far it has been collect 4 disks from random npc loot. The loot ratio is currently disgusting, hundreds of mobs in a row drop nothing.

Sin-tor, I honestly had not read what you wrote before, but that was well said.

So was the post after it. Thank you very much for describing in clear terms what you mean by content. Granted, some.. ok many of the things you mentioned as content desires aren't probably high on my personal list, but they are still very valid, and it helps me understand where other people are coming from.

Thanks for the good posts on this.

well, that's actually what gaming is all about: finding out what is fun to you and running with it. what i meant when i said social content is up to the player, i feel i can explain a little better:

social content is made, manufactured, and owned by you, the player. social content could be described as a play (theatre type, not football ) in which the game and its environs are merely props and stage. while i, being more concerned with pvp and game mechanics, might stroll into the local cantina and rattle off something about killing a rancor or another player, thus generating a few head turns but a general lack of interest; you, being the social butterfly , might come in and relay an edge-of-your-seat tale about the slaying of a single out-of-hand gnort, turning every head in the cantina and generating more social interaction (more tales, encouragement, possibly some tips, etc).

i think we would all agree that killing gnorts isn't exactly the height of the star wars galaxies experience, but like i said, you control the social content and you can turn it into the best story that cantina has heard all month. play, props, and stage

ever taken the bartle test? try it and see what you come up with. I did everything I could think to do in swg, i had two accounts, one mastered weaponsmithing while the other is now what i would have considered one of the best possible pvp templates possible (had 90+ knockdown defense, ranged carbine knockdowns so i could close distance and use master tka, with some other perks ), i ran around with a master doctor/combat medic and we pretty much blazed through all the theme parks, hard static spawns, dungeons, and npc quests we could get our hands on. we even ran around on the "elite" planets to every possible inch of ground, uncovering some interesting static spawns that weren't marked by others; although these spawns didn't present anything new (loot, challenge, or otherwise). basically, the game hit a high point for us, i won't denythat i enjoyeduncovering all the new stuff i hadn't seen before, and then... nothing. we did pvp for a while; very sad. everything was one-hit to kill, then TEF bleed or one-shot when they chased you down out of a cloning center. when they finally dropped pvp damage they nerfed us so hard i didn't feel like playing even though i could still compete with doctor buffs + sunburns, etc.

anyway, just thought i would elaborate on social content and why i'm disgruntled

PS my bartle is KAES, starting at 100% respectively

Content is something for people to do. Looting is one great form of content. It can take up thousands of hours of a power gamers time and they love it.

Quests are another form of content. They usually involve getting groups together, beating a boss mob and getting some reward. Sometimes the reward is more in the solving of the quest then in the item gained. But if all quest items suck then people will just complain about them.

ah yes, but then, there would actually have to be a quest item reward to complain about wouldn't there? aside from the god-forsaken bug-bomb. at some point in the jabba quest you can choose not to turn in some cheap rantok sword or something, there's some uber loot for ya. but then you wouldn't get to see jabba's bedroom, would you, and ohhh what a sight it is... do fat slugs actually need beds? Debate!

"1 I wanted to be able to solo and kill some tuff targets and feel a sense of accomplishment in the Teras Kasi profession."

But that's not a content issue -- that's a game mechanics issue, so I still don't know what people mean when they say things like "CONTENT=NOT SWG"

"2 I wanted to to own a ship and navigate space with it."

OK, a content issue here - I wanted that too.
