Thread: Katarn Sliced[+NightBlade] Quick Guide
I see a lot of posts about slicking Knuckles Of Katarn. Since this is arguably our best weapon, I made a quick guide regarding this:
I posted links so you could see what mod dps is like for (MTK/MDOC/SW 0.0.3.1):
Katarn Unsliced.
Speed: 2
Dmg: 358-715
Base Dps: 328/s
Unsliced
1. Katarn Sliced (4% Dmg, 4% Speed)
Speed: 1.92
Dmg: 372-743
Base Dps: 352.6 /s
Cheep slice - This is a decent slice if you have no slicing components. I had my first katarn sliced like this.

2. Katarn Dmg Sliced (8% Dmg, 3% Critical, 2% Speed)
Speed: 1.96
Dmg: 386-772
Base Dps: 356.63 /s
Most popular slice - You will need to get an illegal core booster or this slice will cost you a bit. (300k - 1Mil on my server). This is as good as it gets when it comes to maxing out dmg. Criticals do not work yet...but hopefully they will soon.

3. Katarn Speed Sliced: (12% Speed)
Speed: 1.76
Dmg: 358-715
Base Dps: 372 /s
This slice gives you the most DPS, so if you plan to hit something with no specials for a while this is great. With a doctor speed buff I hit like a madman with this. (very little delay on specials, but you can run out of action fast). You will need delicate trigger assembly for this slice. (100k -300k on my server)

Speed: 2.02
Dmg: 403-807
Base Dps: 299.68 /s

I did some quick testing on killing around 60 lvl 82 creatures (bolls). I only had a limited amount of time so I wanted to see how fast I could take them out with combination of my best attacks (MTK/MDOC/SW 0.0.3.1), without worrying too much about the numbers.
Slice #2 performed the best, followed by #3 (very close), and #1. The fastest kill time was with #2 (at 9Secs), but avg was very close (around 14s) with #2 being slightly better on action.
For me conclusion was:
- Use Dmg Slice most of the time. (easier on action)
- Use Speed Slice when I want to have fun... (or have good action pup/food)
- Use first slice if you can not get components, or on the budget.

nevermind, I was wrong, did a full damage slice on another Nightblade and didn't hit any caps.

It's thought that it's impossible to hit the caps on quest weapons since they are all identical. Looted weapons are a different matter because there is still some variation in different weapons.
If and when I get enough credits saved up for on myself, I'll probably speed slice it and drop damage pups on it.
..and I have heard that as well... I still wanted to double check before slicing nightblade, as I would not want to run into a cap after slicing it 2x for dmg. I would most likely do a full speed slice in that case.
From what I've seen, Katarn is faster, but most Necrosis Nightblades have higher Max damage. Personally I'm going to attempt to get a NN, as I like to do more damage per attack to cut down on my action costs. I also have extra speed from Smuggler, so I need more damage then I do speed.
Oh, update on the Necrosis Nightblade max damage.... I saw one last night with a max damage of 788 with a 4% damage slice, so obviously 787.5 isn't the cap.

For the record, go with the 3 damage/1 speed/1 critical slice and get a speed pup. I hit 875 DPS on my Katarn's. On my other set I took a level 4 speed slice and added a damage pup and only get about 600dps. Check this out:
