Thread: Wouldn't it be nice if we could to Kata?

I believe Kata is the name. It's like a dance almost, but done using martial arts moves. It would be really cool if we could do that, even if it maybe didn't have a function. Course if it had a purpose that'd be even better.

Just a thought though really.

Probably will not happen. I am in martial arts now. Thing about kata's is that in combat they are never used at all. You can even ask a martial arts trainer (sensei) and they will tell you that in any real fight you will never use a kata. It's all really for show and training.

that is not correct, most kata's will not be done in the same order but you will see in real fights several combinations from the same kata, i have seen people use a complete kata at a shia and score 3-0

right, the individual moves, or a brief series of moves from a katamight be used in combat, but never the whole thing, or even an extended section.

I actually ment to use it just for show. As a bonus in a way. I konw Kata is rarely used in combat and is not effective outside of the affor mentioned Kiratie Kid movie.

Just something to do, kinda like /dance, but not so girlie. Kinda like you see Jackie Chan do in his movies from time to time.

Hey, that would be cool.

Get a group of 16 TKA, line them up 4 by 4 in some public place, and everyone does Kata at the same time

I was actuallly thinking about this. Maybe if we could do it, it would heal mind wounds drastically fast. would have an "entertainer" aspect to it.

As for fighting and using kata...spar with me In my dojo we do kumate sessions where we use and attack using ONLY katas. I actually put someone in crutches using a simple move from chinto (if you know what that is)

Kata... This would be a great way to earn Meditation skill points instead of killing stuff.

There we go, NoDrab gave it a purpose. Instead of unarmed XP going to Meditation (how does beating the snot outta something make you meditate better anyway?) We can do Kata to gain xp in it.

Hear this devs? Get someone in those pingpong suits and get us some Kata animations! hehe

To clear up the general misconception about forms/kata:

1) It is the end all-be all of training and is 100% useful during crunch time.

2) It is worthless and for show only.

Both are absolutely wrong. Look at forms/katas as books. They are a way of recording information to be passed down from teacher to student. And like a good book, you can learn from what is inside or just skim the pages. If you don't learn from what you read and see the subtle messages imprinted you are missing out on some of the author's inent, and so you might not care for the book at all.

With a form/kata if you do not view it asa reliable source of combat information then the movements are useless to you. Conversely if you rigidly believe that a form/kata is literal in its interpretation then you are also screwed. Many of the Japanese and Okinawan forms practiced in styles today make me laugh because when it comes time for combat everyone simply tappy-tap-kick-boxes and forgets what their forms are trying to teach them. The same is true for many Chinese Martial Artists as well. But when you see a master performing the students usually go, "Hey that looks familiar..." after they pick themselves up off the ground.

Regarding the meditate and forms/katas, I think that is a great idea. I would like to see my avatar doing some Tai Chi-esque movements personally, but that is me.
