Thread: How come the only person with any balls in this forum is a girl?
You're getting all hung up on this "social interaction" thing. The point is, the older style RPG games were all based around a party of characters. It is entirely irrelevant whether they were controlled by a single player or multiple players. The fact remains that it took multiple characters to be successful.
Star Wars Galaxies is NOT such a game. It is based around the Heroic exploits of single legendary characters. No character class should depend upon any other for performance. There are areas where each class could benefit from teaming up with another class, and that is as it should be. However, the characters should be able to stand alone on their own merits and be judged as relatively equal when standing alone.
This is clearly NOT the case with TKA. They are seriously underpowered against Ranged players for a number of reasons; latency being one of them. Many posters in this thread get sidetracked into talking about mobs. That is a side issue. The main issue is the weakness of TKA in PvP.

You're the one that started the whole social interaction thing, and I infered it to mean that you were basing this on 70s-80s table top RPG experiences, which I agree were indeed social by nature, but when it came to computer games, the closest thing you came to social interaction was MUD. All the games you quoted, yes had a group of characters focusing around a central plot, but this is a far far cry from and totally different from the social interaction of playing in an MMO.

Where in the manual does it say that? Sorry thats an inference on your part, and I would beg to differ greatly as many things such as a player driven economy (forcing you to rely on crafters for instance for many goods/services), allowing only 1 character per server, etc all seem to point to a more social, less solo mindset.

No, the main issue is NOT pvp. I agree we are at a dissadvantage against ranged, but thats how its intended to be. The only thing I think needs improvement in that area is for us to actually have an advantage at melee ranges, which we currently do not. The dev team has already stated that in fact melee should get owned at ranged, and potentially vice versa. You're never going to get them to move from this stance, so its pointless to argue for such changes, but by all means if you feel the need to fight an already lost war, I won't stop you from it, I'll merely point out the futility in it.
Says who?? Please point to the place in any game information or documentation where this quote, or something similar to it exists. The whole game is built from the ground up so that you are in at least some way dependant on others. That's the whole logic of not being able to heal your own mind wounds -- the game is based on the premise of encouraging social interaction, and NOT just solo characters, by force if necessary.
The only place your statment exists is in your own mind and your personal opinion of what you think the game OUGHT to be like. I'm not evaluating whether you're right or wrong that the game would be better if it was that way, but it is certainly not designed to be that way. Conversely, I'm pointing out what experiential evidences seems to affirm. There are countless ways in which the game either encourages you or outright forces you to depend on other players - I feel pretty comfortable saying the evidence seems to indicate that the Devs intend this to be a social game.
More examples to "encourage" (i.e. force) Social interaction:
BattleDamage stat - Healable only via cantina/camp with a dancer/musician
Mind Wounds - Healable only via dancer/musician or lucky us tka meditation
Weapons - Uber weapons purchaseable only by High End weapon smiths
Armor - see above
Buffs - Only available via Docs/Chefs/Smugglers
Do you honestly think that a game with potentially 500k subscribers was essentially meant to be a solo fest where characters were designed to be able to cover thier arse in a magnitude of different situations? Thats counterintuitive to the genre man.
Jack when I started playing the game was fun, it still has lots of fun features. No stupid corpse runs, no overpowered npc's. But with that patch they showed they want to turn this completely into everquest where it takes forever to kill anything and killing anything requires a lot of people.
I left EQ because it was boring. Noone likes a leveling treadmill. Now you are probably low level yet, but once you get up there you get to notice that anything that gives decent exp is just too hard. Dont tell me to grow balls and fight hard, I like to enjoy the game and have it easy, not suffer through this like it's a second job.
You want a challenge? Go find a real 40 hour a week work and then come home and tell me "oh its too easy make it harder"... as*hole. =P
Once again, both of you are falling into a very short-sighted trap, one that is common to people who have played other MMORPGs. You automatically assume that this game has to share characteristics with previous games in the "genre". You're WRONG. While Star Wars Galaxies may be lumped in with EQ, UO and other games, that doesn't mean it has to do things the same way. This is the same mentality that accepts a premature game release, rife with bugs, because "they all start out that way". That is absurd; the kind of peer-pressure mentality that gets kids hooked on drugs. Would you, as a parent, say "Oh, they all get hooked on drugs, it's part of being a teenager", or would you encourage your child to be it's own person and forge it's own path? Stop forcing SWG to be on drugs.
I agree that there is no written proof to my claims that this game is a game of individuals rather than a game of party interaction. All I can do to back up my claim is point out to you the movies. At almost all times the protagonists were acting alone, or in groups of 2 to 3. Each character had abilities that made them special on their own; they didn't require another character to back them up.
As far as the asinine assertion that the Devs meant "Melee to be owned by Ranged", I quote you written proof that this is grossly incorrect:
"Teras Kasi are lethal, nearly impossible to knock down or unbalance"
"Facing an opponent armed with ranged weapons, high-level abilities enable him or her to evade blaster fire and close in quickly, bringing his or her enemy swiftly to the ground."

I suppose Grimror is used to being proven wrong, though. Every post of his contains easily disproven factual fallacies (not to mention brutal grammar and terrible spelling).

You're the one falling into the short sighted trap that you actually think you know what is envisioned by the designers of this game. You're also falling into the short sighted trap that you think that you as a player of this game are supposed to be comprable to Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Chewie, Lea, et al. This is a very short sighted misconception indeed. You're not a Jedi with 20k HAM, you're not even an ewok. You're the rebel soldier that gets gunned down on Hoth by the Imperials. You're Biggs-like, but even less so.
That's ridiculous. We're ALL Luke. We're ALL Leia. Nobody plays this game to be "that guy on the Tantive IV who got killed in 30 seconds". We don't walk around envisioning ourselves as faceless nobodys. This is a game of Galactic Civil War, and of our unscripted part in it. We should all have the POTENTIAL to be a big part of it; we should all be able to compete.
You're right about one thing (for a change). I don't know what is envisioned by the developers of this game. For all I know, they may be planning to add Teletubbies. But I know what is in the minds and hearts of the FANS; therefore I know what SHOULD be in the minds of the developers.
