Well let me respond to a couple.

All my examples are with a pistol/ handgun type firearm in mind.

Shotgun... that's going to probably reduce my safe range to about 4 feet. However a shotgun is much more cumbersome and MUCH MUCH MUCH easier to deal withwhen I do get to you.

Yes, someone with experience in firearms will be aiming for center mass. They probably also will not be holding their weapon straight out in front of them as well. And with someone highly trained like the Law Enforcement Officers that I work with, the first time they try to 'shoot' me I can close about 7 feet. After they've tried it a few times they learn and adapt and my range falls to about4 feet.

Do I mean that a TKA should be toast at a range of more than 2M?

If the gunman is running away and shooting over his shoulder no, you should be able to hit nothing more a Famba doing this. If the gunman is standing still or kneeling at a distance of10 meters with no other distractions, yes, I'd say that the TKA should be in trouble. This is where Tactics and other types of training come into play to determine who is gonna win.

The color of your belt means nothing, and a lot of the guys on your local SWAT team have studied Martial Arts/ defensive tactics enough to either have an 'official' black belt, or be the equivilant of one.

If you have a question or comment for me please feel free to post, I won't bite your head off.

I agree and disagree with all of the posts on this subject....I've been studying muy thai since I was a small boy to but it is mostly ring fighting, yes it has a combat perspectiv to it but I don't know about all this 21 feet and 7 feet stuff, as far as what a martial artest can and cant to.....except for this...I am a cop and yes a person can kill you within 21 feet if you don't have your weapon drawn and there is no way in hell you can shoot some one while looking back and running forward(especially with a freaking rifle) believe me I'v had to shoot at people before and it's hard enough to do it when you are prone or standing or what ever....the fact is, this game is set up for the marksman class and albeit that I am a teras kasi novice and a master brawler we all in themelee class have to learn to live with that fact no matter how much it sucks and how obseanly unreal it is....that's the way it is....I just hope they fix it before I stop playing....all they really need to do is lower the drain on our ham pools for doing special moves and then give some sort of penalty(other than the lame ass one they have now) for running and shooting and an even greater one for doing it with the rifle and the problem is solved

Fear...Fear attracts the fearful. The strong, the weak, the innocent, the corrupt. Fear...Fear is my ally.....

Let's stop pointing fingers and just fix the problem.

My two cents

I AM in Law Enforcement, I am a federal law enforcement Officer stationed in Seattle, WA. I AM an EMT. I have over 5 years of expierence doing both. Prior to that, I WAS a United States Marine in a SOC (Special Ops Capable) unit...look it up if you dont know what that is.IAM in martial arts, and have9 years of expierencewith it (JKD, judo,Marine and LE close combat training). I AM also a computer gamer and Star Wars fan...dont tell my fellow officers <grin>

This discussion is pointless.

Kas, if you are and expierened MA who trains law enforcement officers, i am very dissapointed that you would perpetuate this arguement. Based on your original post and replys, i really doubt that you have more than minimal training in martial arts, no real life expierence, and i dont believe you are the facilitator for ANY Police combat/officer survival training.

If i am wrong, please forgive me, and drop me a line with your departments info,I am always interested in sharing information on officer survival techniques with other departments.

Everyone else, this really is a moot point. However much you would wish otherwise, this game has nothing to do with real life. NOTHING. It is a game, deal.

I have yet to see more than a post or two on this subject that was more than fantasy and Hollywood speculation on the part ofinexperienced and unknowlegable persons. This is a veryDEADLY subject, when discussingr/l occurences. I urge you all to research and recieve training inthis area, this will prepare you if you ever find yourself in a similar situation. There are many training courses available to civilians to increase your awareness of the subject.Contact me if you want further info.

Remember, dont play the hero in r/l. Ifsomeone has you at gunpoint, do as he says. Dont make yourself a problem. Comply withhis commmands,do whatever you have to to survive. Once you have survived and escaped, contact yourlocal law enforcement, theyWILL catch him.

now i am not gonna try to defend the claim that this so called "master martial artist" aka computer nerd that has watched too many kung fu movies, can in fact disarm someone at 7 feet using anything other than some sort of mutant telepathic power, but ill will say this: forget real life, this is a game...and in a game where everyone pays the same amount of money then each persons favorite class should be made balanced period. when's the last time u saw a bow just win in a mmorpg...never, thats what i thought...and bows pretty much destroyed knights and samurai if anyone was wondering. making a game fun and balanced isnt communism and it doesnt ruin the mystique...its just good business

Look at what happened a month ago in Iraq.

Uday, Qusay, and Uday's son were holed up in that house with a few AK-47's.

THEY HELD OFF A HUNDRED 101st Airborne Rangers + a bunchof other Special Forces...and shot 3 of our guys...the most elite of the elite fighters in the most powerful army in the world couldn't take 3 ass-clowns down in a even fight. (rifle v. rifle). Actually in a even fight...they WON. We had 3 casualties..they had zero.

That was until they Rangers broke out the TOW's, MK19's grendae launchers, and M2 .50 Cals and leveled the house.

The Rangers didn't send in the 1337 Ninja squad.

Cool now we can all argue about something else...

Lonemech, gotta call you wrong on your "bow" comment. While certainly their were early devastations brought on by the English long bow, and crossbows grew to great power, these weapons were never that effective against armored knights, but rather the less armored "peasant" warriors. As to the samurai the lamellar armor they wore was specifically designed to shed arrows from heavy composite bows. I know, I built a full set out of 1,500 plates. Granted mine is for SCA combat so I only get hit with blunted rubber arrows and rattan swords (solidreed like material, similar to a baseball bat)and I built it out of titanium to save on weight, but the design, overlap, and 'flow' of the piece is consistent with historical pieces. This is why roles of the dead at medieval battles would often have only a few dozen named individuals (knights, counts, etc) while including thousands or tens of thousands of peasant fighters.

Unless an archer could target an eye-slot or an armpit knights were generally safe. Generally arrows were used in huge lobbing volleys designed to suppress the masses, not as pin point accurate killing devices like we see in Lord of the Rings movies. Research in this has led to the "plate is proof" rules of certain SCA regions. Metal plates over 4" are designated as proof from arrow shots.

The true deathblow to the knights was gun powder, inexpensive guns, and militia for hire. As it became cheaper to field units of musketeers and less and less likely that you could move in armor thick enough to bounce the musket balls the use of armor diminished. Further as the use of 'hired guns' became more commonplace the requirement of knights to serve in the field lost both it's luster and it's benefit.

I chose to make my Character TKA because I'm a Martial Artist. It appeals tome; Martial Arts has been my life since I was 4 years old. I hold the RL title of Master in the Martial Arts. To further my credentials, my RL job is a Professional Men's Gymnastics Coach. I also teach defensive tactics and self defensefor Law Enforcement Agencies. (Now who would think that by night I'm also a computer geek.)

Here are a couple of my opinions on TKA based upon my knowledge of combat.

The thing makes me swear the most is when someone attacks me with their pea shooter, runs away whileshooting over their shoulder, and incapacitates me.

1) Lets take a RL example: If you are standing 7 feet away from me, andholding a gun pointed straight at my head.YOU ARE DEAD! Why is this? Because it takes a certain ammount of time for you to react. You have to see that I'm moving, you have to decide to try and shoot me, you have to re-acquire a target and finally you have to pull a trigger. During the time it took you to do all that, I've already gotten you. I move a distance of 7 feet faster than you can react.

If a TKA ever gets within 2 meters of someone with a clumsy blaster out that blaster boy should be toast.

But in the game... oh youall know the problems there...

2) Another RL example: Take someone, put them in body armor and a helmet. Give them a heavy bulky object that would represent a gun. Now give him a couple seconds to start running, and then go try to catch him. You should catch him easily.

Body armor and a big gun make it harder for you to run. Is there a run speed penalty in the game for wearing armor andcarrying a big gun? Not that I know of.

When the wussy starts running away from a TKA, the TKA should catch him. Assuming of course that like most TKA's you don't wear armor and if your a TRUE TKA you dont use VKs.

3) If someone's running away from me, and I finally catch up to them... Am i going to come to an abrupt halt, step back into my fighting stance and Kiai? (Kiai is that Hi-Ya! thing) Heck no, I'm gonna' jump from my run into a flying side kickand nailthe wussy hard in the body so that he'll stumble back or fall down. He's not going to keep running once I get within combat distance because I know how to prevent said wussy man from getting away.

Is this ability anywhere in TKA? No... All they gotta do is keep running becuse for you to do anything that will cause damage you cant be running. OMG GIVE ME A BREAK! (Due to the fact that children might read this post, I cant say anything more in this paragraph.)

4) In working with Law Enforcement Agencies, I've had the opportunity to attend numerous firearm trainings. It is darned hard to hit anything with a firearm while you are moving, and if your target is moving as well, theres almost no chance of hitting something at a distance of more than a few feet.

Something I've never tried, and never seen taught or tried is turning the head and shoulders around and shooting backwards while running forward. This would be not only a gross violation of firearms safety but also be pretty stupid. Go out to a field turn your head and shoulders looking backward, and run forward. Hmmm I bet you just might trip and fall. Go try this on a hill in the woods, if you dont trip and fall, you'll probably smack into a tree after a rock leaves a nice mark on your shin.No further comments for #4.

Well anyway these are just a few of my thoughts about the combat system for TKA on SWG.

Somone's been watching way too much DBZ...

Firstly, if you were a martial arts Master, you wouldn't be here spewing about it.

now I shal deconstruct your points one by one. You shall feel honored by this.

1) Your assumption would be vaguely accurate if a. the one holding the gun was an underage streetpunk with no training and b. if you had just got done watching a chop saki movie and decided you were a martial arts Master. The first thing any martial artis is taught about being attacked with a weapon is to run from a gun while zigzagging (unless at point blank range, wish is LESS than 7feet by 4 feet), and step inward with a melee weapon. This is because a moving target is harder and harder to hit the further away they get with a ranged weapon, but with a melee weapon getting inside the user's reach is the single biggest advantage.

Also, given that the vast majority of people pointing a gun at you in SWG are the equivilant of a military trained sharp shooter and stone cold killer, your listing of the various steps is completely unrealistic. By the time a trained person has drawn a gun, they have made the decision to shoot and are ready to pull the trigger.

2) Try punching modern body armor skippy. After the various bones in your hand are mended, try to chase somone down who is wearing armor and carrying an assault rifle. It's amazing how fast you'l catch them. Your bloody, mangled bullet riddled corpes should land at their feet quite nicely. In real life trained people with guns don't run untill a situation is hopeless (which an unnarmed, unarmored person is not), they fall back. Huge difference.

You want a really good example of how people with guns vs. martial artists goes, look up the Chinese taking and ocupation of Tibet.

3) See point 2. But I'll give you that TKA does need some move through and momentum attacks.

4) Very true, firing backwards while running would be a very desperate thing to do, ut you must keep in mind, that this is a game based on an action movie.

And by the way, it's called certification training, not firearms trainings.
