Hmm. isn't this the primary reason he died ? There is no such thing as a fair fight in PvP.
Most importantly alwayscome prepared for PvP: Armor/Buffs, Food/Drink. Plus, know you strenghts & weakness of you main fighting skill and make sure you have a GOOD support skill that will complement your main skill.
Your template mite not give you the ability to heal states or even poison/disease so make sure you get the proper buffs that will help reduce the damage taken.
Finally, as a TKM always use STATES first... KD/Lunge should be your last move after laying on the states that will help you survive the first 10 minutes of the fight- (synthsteak.)

This whole posts showsa it again.. no PvP without:
-Stun full Compo 90%+ PSG
-Fullbuffs incl Mind
-Def Stacking
-DOT Weapons
-Stun Weapons
Sorry, but this leaves surely only a select few with crippled Template wha can reallynot do anything than PvP.
Sadly leaving out "normal Players"
I hope, the CB will right all that.
I want to have a chance, as the owner of "Just" one Combat Mastry...

I skilled fighter with eg. rifleman/SL or whatever none full pvp template cam still beat someone with uber template and gear but no skill...
Skill is a very deciding factor

I'll put it this way.
I'm a fencer, not even a master. When I use CoB in combat, my combat window shows "evade, evade, evade, etc.". It's amazing. It's not even close to that without CoB. When I use CoB with TKM, I can't tell that anything has changed.
It's a lot less but it works, I've seen dodge/counterattack/block appear 5 times in a row in one duel, I must add though that it happens about half the time that block hits when I'm using my pikes. Someone somewhere on these boards explained once that was because Defensive Acuity wasn't brough on par with the other skills when they were changed to work more often.
