samurai were the inspiration for jedi *FACT*, George Lucas was inspired by Akira Kurosawa. What was Akira Kurosawa?...thats right he was samurai lineage...so if we have that relation in terms to inspiration, then it is safe to asume that Teras Kasi inspiration can be a form of taijutsu (or ninjutsu as its more commonly reffered to) or even shaolin as both have roots in the same philosophies and this is where the equation comes from.
you can argue it all you like, deny it, subjectively analize it but you can only come to that logical conclusion because jedi and space are the main focus of the lucas (star wars) lore and everything radiates outward from those central hubs. The foundation is there to creativly build upon your profession so take what inspiration to the class is already there and enjoy playing your profession with content you already have.

The inspiration i see when comparing jedi to samurai are that they are both in an organized group, under a leader respecting a "Code".

The claim that Lucas drew inspiration from Kurosawa was made by Lucas.
By the way, I've studied Yang style Shaolin, and I don't remember ever doing a Spitting Rawl.
Whether a TKA is closer to a ninja or a Shaolin monk is speculation. I'd agree with you, as an opinion, but I wouldn't state is as fact.

Lusiphur69 wrote:The claim that Lucas drew inspiration from Samurai is a false assumption. The source you claim mentions a JAPANESE MOVIE DIRECTOR.Lucas more than likely is a fan of said director, as well as others, and was probably influenced by them.Having said this, Jedi are a different animal.Jedi are NOT honor bound to run themselves through if they fail.Jedi have a council, not a Shogun.Jedi come from everywhere, including slave boys.Samurai are born into their caste. If your father was a pot maker, you will NOT be a Samurai.Jedi dudies included serving as arbiters. Helping the common folk.Samurai were bound to the Shogun alone. And TKM are in no way based on Ninja. They are based on Shaolin. They are unarmed fighters.Meditation is a MAJOR skill.Look at the names of the techniques.Look at some of the titles, such as "Monk"And please don't make the mistake of saying, "Ninja, Shaolin, same thing."Two different countries. Two different cultures. Two different disciplines. Two different lifestyles. They NEVER got along.Having studied Bak Shaolin Eagle Claw Temple Boxing I can vouch for that.
never watched the 'seven samurai' have you? even the transitional editing is the same as star wars, just a quick google will produce the paralels you need to understand how the staw wars universe came about.

Lucas' affection and admiration for Kurosawa probably influenced his decision to visit Japan sometime in the early 1970s. While he was there Lucas borrowed the name "Jedi" from "Jidai Geki" ("period dramas", movies about samurai).

If you read my post it EXPLICITLY states that you mention a JAPANESE MOVIE DIRECTOR.
I agree with you that said director'swork may have very well influenced Lucas' own creations.
It's next to impossible to find an "original" director who is so unique that you can find NO parallels
to other people's work.
However, you do nothing toaccount foreven the few glaring differences between Samurai and Jedi.
Merely looking at the social structure, basic beliefs, and organizational structure of the two groups
I still say the two are more different than same.
About the only thing they have in common is that they both use "swords" of some sort, and referring
to the lightsaber as a "sword" is even a stretch.

Yes, Konik is right. Akira Kurosawa was descended from a line of samurai, and while samurai technically ceased to exist when the emperor of Japan outlawed their social class their descendents still consider themselves to be samurai.

Or maybe he could have meant Samurai or more famous for their swords and ninja for the fist?
Dunno...or maybe it was meant to be as complicated as everyone else made it.

Ninja? No. Teras Kasi and Martial Arts.
As for Jedi as Samurai...i'd say thats' pretty close. Jedi and Samurai have their own differing levels of valor, yet both believe that through death can the warrior be "one". The Jedi code and the code of Bushido match on many levels as both codes indulge in mediation and mastery of the mind to be great in combat.

Teras Kasi is the equivilant of ANY martial arts form, more importantly Karate. In SWG, however, Teras Kasi doesnt teach you to disarm your opponent as most martial arts forms do. Im just not sure which martial arts form there is that TK can be directly related to, but Shotokan Karate would be my personal guess.

there is no 'better' style of martial arts or defining style of how martial arts should be i am mearly giving a popular relation to how the jedi TK thing can be percieved in its nature to each other to the layman.
*saber* use is a martial art as is unarmed combat, any form or style of fighting indicative to war is a martial art, martial arts has become just that an *art* because of its redundence on the mordern battlefield.
