Thread: TKMs: VK's or No VK's

I just started using my VK's again when the Geo cave opened up, to many people trying for the same NPC's. Muon and Brandy can usually keep up with the mind drain from the HAM cost, but Doc buffs and liberal healing will keep the rest of your HAM A-OK.

my mind stats are 800 - 1100 - 1100, add brandy and start swingin my VK, with my doc buffs and no armor my vk costs me -1 per swing, so does my fist, i'll keep the damage.

Option 1 - Buffs are your friend. At least try to have food and spice buffs. It is worth your time to hunt down a good chef and buy 100k in food. Once/if they fix the stomach, food buffs will be even more useful. Pick up some medic skills and you can spamany moveall day. You will get the maximumkills-per-hour using this method. You wont even have to wear armor.

Option 2 - No buffs, un-equip VKs when using special moves, then re-equip to auto-attack. This method takes a lot more time to kill something.

Option 1 maximizes the killing potential of the TKA class.I only use option 2 when I make a bad pull or am just running around doing nothing important.Since it takes longer to kill mobs using option 2 , you might have to wear armor. Option 2 is for people that dont mind standing there and tankinga mob.If you want to kill something quick, use option 1.

Your play style and profession template also determine whether to use VKs or not. If you like to group, you might be able to rely on another person to heal you, so buffs andmay not be that important. If you like to solo (as I do), you might want to pick up some medic skills (or better yet Doctor skils).

I dont see a reason not to use VKs. ANY extra damage helps, just un-equip for special moves if you are worried about HAM costs.

Its annoying that all you people are not giving the best advice. Food and spice isnt the answer all the time. This is my advice:

Get a Master weaponsmith to make you the lowest damage VK he/she can and maximizing the build for less HAM cost. This way you get the AP, which is all that really matters, and not have to worry about HAM. The difference in damage in a VK means diddly. The AP is what shines ur damage. I believe the TK's actual fist/feet, (no VK) is 25 - 50. Adding an extra 100 - 140 max damage is nothing when stacked up against the HAM costs normally gotten from a regular VK. We get a Damage bonus for a reason. Rely on what you got, not always food and spices and buffs. Then you will truly gain respect of your peers.

This is actually the best advice I have seen on this issue. It is the AP that you need. I don't use VK's that much as a MTKA except in those situations that I encounter someone in "uber" kinetic resist composite armor. I use low HAM vk's for the AP and then rely on the skills that I have to stun, kd, and target the mind pool.

Well some of us want the AP and the best damage

Which is why doc buffs + brandy is the way to go and it will allow you to use vks without having to worry about your mind ham....

Only time I wear my VK's is if I'm fighting an opponent who is wearing armor... you'll need that AP1 to do any real damage.

I would agree that every little bit of HAM reduction helps, however as a Master Weaponsmith (and Master TKA with another character) the HAM reduction you can achieve through experimentaion is trival. It is essentially1 point HAM reduction(for each of the three bars) per 1 point experimentation. This would perhaps enable 1 (maybe 2) more special(s) before blowing you mind. However, since the damage is significantly reduced (max/min damage around 30 less than if you experiment for damage) the over all damage is still less. That is, (at least I would argue in most scenarios) doing more specials with lower damage VKs will still result in less damage than doing fewerspecials with higher damage VK's.

Aside from damgae, I do see an advantage to attempt that one last KD or blind or dizzy that perhaps turns the tide.

I've got a question related to this...

I've read the FAQ, and the formula for speed is as follows:

(WeaponSpeed * SpecialDelayMod) - ((WeaponSpeed * SpecialDelayMod) * (UnarmedSpeed/100))

So, as an Unarmed 4 dude, it is well known that I should use VK so that I can attack faster. I can figure out how fast I can attack, because I can look at the speed on the VK, but does anyone know

What is the WeaponSpeed for bare knuckles?

I'd like to reiterate drez's question.

What is the Weapon Speed for bare knuckles?

I'm still leveling up the Power Tech tree and I want to figure out where's the point that the +damage and +speed make it worth my while to switch to bare knuckles in damage per second. Right now with my 70% kinetic ubese jacket / bracers / pants, boost and brandy,I can spam specials all day and Health and Mind are ok. But my Action goes waaaayyy down. Currently I'm just healing myself, but long term (when fighting between buffs), there's got to be a better way.

I'm going to try and find some of those low damage, low speed, low HAM Vk's too. That might help a lot. I'd put up with less damage if it wasn't killing my Action bar.

Dump the ubese. You'll be glad you did. If you really need some armour, get mabari which doesnt damage your mind pools. TKM rarely get hit anyway (especially when running CoB), so I typically fight unarmoured.

I think you will find the cutoff point where you should start to use a damage sliced VK over a speed sliced one isaround PT3 maybe PT4. Cant help you with bare fists - as they do maybe half the damage that my damage sliced VKs do so I never use them.

I just want to reiterate my post above as some people stilldont seem to understand!

Get buffs (doctors, musicians etc). Get a damage sliced knuckler. KD/Warcry and UA3. Most things die before they get up.

For even more power, get a 30% Max damage, +15% min powerup too!

HAM costs are unimportant (with buffs). Speed is unimportant (with PT4). Damage is the only thing that counts

Thanks for the response Arafu.

I'll look into the mabari, haven't really checked it out much. I usually only use the Ubese as my "work suit" when I know I'm going to be surrounded by high damage mobs. Most of the time I go unarmored and just wear the jacket to protect my +intimidate and +warcyr BE-enhanced shirt. Then if I'm going into the Geonosian caves I wear my shiny new composite armor.

But tell me more about Center of Being. Do you just start that up at the beginning of a fight? How long does it last? Does it reduce the damage you dish out? Is there a timer on it?

I'll check the faq for more info, but I read it once and I don't remember seeing any details.

Thanks

dont know about you but none of my def mods work except melee def. Cob does nothing and we all know block and def acuity is broken. Also dodge doesnt seem to be working but hopefully these will be fixed in pub7 or im quiting when the 125melee cap comes.

I use CoB whenever it looks like I am about to be hit by lots of critters. It expires every so often (check your skills panel for how long it runs for you). As soon as it runs out, use it again.

Some people claim it doesnt work. For me, it noticably reduces the number of hits that land on me. It doesnt effect your damage output at all. I find its very noticable when I'm surrounded bymaybe 4+ rancors that my health bars tend to drop way faster when CoB has expired.

I havnt been to the geo caves - but for everything I fight I stay unarmoured. Although I will throw on a helmet to protect my mind pool when fighting really tough things like Force Crystal Hunters or Ancient Bull Rancors. However, I am a master doc too - so I can remove all status effects and heald/firstaid/heals self as and when needed .....

It puzzles me why people rave so much about ubese and composite. I've never owned any and I've never missed it! A decent suit of Mabari will absorb 60% of all incomming damage which is usually plenty for a TK. And with a total HAM cost of 100ish, you cant really beat it!

PvP is a different thing though - composite armour is fairly important for PvP.

If I'm buffed I use my VK, always. If I'm not buffed and the target has no armor I don't use my VK. If I'm not buffed and the target has armor I use my VK and *try* not to use unarmedhit3 which is hard because the animiation is so beautiful.

I asked the same question on another site a few days ago. I was told that the unarmed speed of a bare hand is 4. You don't have to advance very far before you don't get a speed boost from vks
