Thread: This weeks poll is fascinating
Absolutely - agreed.
I think if they did this poll again after the game has matured the Group PvE would only increase through time, primarly at the cost of Solo PvE. Most of the solo PvE community come freshfrom the consul game worldand don't have a good feel for the kind of enjoyment you can get by being part of a competent group. This will change as they get more familiar with the game and learn how to relate more effectively in combat with others.
If SWG was smart they would focus the lions share of their attention on Group PvE.
- First, make it more interesting and worthwhile to do it.
- Second, add lots of content to the game along the PvE line.
- Third convert the GCW to more of a group PvE scenario at the expense of solo PvP.
- Severly reduce the opportunities for solo PvP by making it voluntary or within certain limited geographical areas. It pisses more people off then it please people.
- Provide reasons and content for group PvP within the GCW environment.
What you want to do and what you find yourself doing are not always the same thing. I wanted to do large scale PvP but I ended up running faction missions over and over because the atmosphere isn't condusive to building friendships, at least not to the extent that other gameswith static camps provided.
What was missing from the poll was: Running across the desert. That is what I spent at least 50% of the time doing, and that is why I have cancelled.
All you people who are saying "yeah it shows more people like PvE" and "PvP powergamers are insignificant" are completely wrong andcompletely inept at reading statistics. It's sad.
3% solo PvP
17% group PvP
First of all that poll means that 20% of players PRIMARILY spend their time PvPing. That is a huge number considering all there is to do in the game like run around attending harvestors, crafting, chatting, making money, etc.
Second of all even though the other 80% of the players dont spend most (as in over 50%) of their time PvPing, that doesn't they don't spend 49% of their time PvPing or 38% of their time PvPing. I regard myself as a "hardcore PvPer" but I have spent probably 95% of my time since the game came outdoing other things like making money, faction points, and switching up my elite masters every once in a while to try a new class.
Third - there are less then 11,000 responses out of 300,000+ people who play that game so it is really not representative of anything.
Considering mostPvP bashers stereotype powergamers and "hardcore" PvPers as immature and ignorant, you really should take some sort of statistics class and expand your own education.
You're playing fast and loose with the poll. The question was, what to you most want to spend your time doing. 18% said PvP of some kind was what the most wanted to be doing - wanted to be doing. Those are the key words. The other 82% of people want to be doing something else.
Look, some of you I think are taking this the wrong way -- this is not about saying "pvp is for loozers d00D!" I enjoy PvP as part of my game experience. I agree with the person who said that the developers should make PvP enjoyable - 20% of your player community is too large a percentage to ignore, and the more enjoyable it is, the more people will WANT to do it.
All this poll does is remind us of the contant trend in the MMORPG community. It has been the predominat position of the die hard (as in played more than 2 RPG type games in their life) community for a long time. And that is that PvE matters. It doesn't matter how great you make your inter-player combat in an role-playing online game. It will only please the overall community as much as it is a part of the LARGER picture of online RP games, which is a very immersive world of content - PvE and Non-Combat immsersive livabilty content of the foundation on which the joys and glories of great PvP will rest. Without that foundation, even the joys and glories of great PvP will ring hollow in the hearts and minds of about 82% of your player community -- PvP alone is not enough, but for many people PvE most certianly would be, which means Devs must (and have already stated repeatedly that they do and will) continue to make priority number one the foundation on which great PvP rests, and from that place of strength begin to enhance and add to PvP -- like the wonderfully tastey dessert topping it is.
This poll doesn't show alot of things. I think if they fixed the pvp issues more would vote for pvp. This is starWARS. Everyone will get into pvp sooner or later. I mean come on, there's only so many planets, so many mobs. Most of the quests are broken. People vote pve and do pve for what reason? Cuase it's fun winning. Sure you will die once inawhile, but more often than not you kill the mob and "win". OR you kill the mob to get stronger. No one i know kill gnorts cuase it's fun. They don't gain anything from it anymore. They want to kill higher lvl things, solo or in group. They want more dungeons, more loot (coming from more mobs) etc etc. IE eq or daoc
But at the end and you can't get anything else, can't earn more xp. What do you do? Quit, reroll, try another prof, or pvp. And as pvp in it's current form with revenge tef cuasing endless tef tags. And at-sts and flamethrowers and eye shot, and whatever else people complain about in pvp. No one is having alot of fun in it, not as many people, atleast compared to pve.
I think pvp should be a HUGE thing in this particular mmrpg. I mean it's starwars, battle of good and evil but in space. I just wish they would have implimented it better. How bout some NPC pvp missions, or NPC bounties placed on your character, served out by NPCs.
Only one thing has made this game a hit. The Star wars liscense. A game with a SWL could be stick figures shooting lines and it would outsell every game on the market. Do not underestimate the power of liscensing![]()
Now what interests me is can SOE manage to keep the liscense interesting with its pathetic game design?
I played this game for only one reason PVP.
coming from Daoc and online halo, counter strike, UO i love online combat, vs other people. as long as its fun. this so far doesn't seem all that fun, seems to me like a big lag fest pokimon clash of the titans (comandos/bountyhunters) while the TKM Me gets left int he dust as a laughable little charecter that will always suck in this game.
/shrug hope not, I think the TKM is the cooliest class out there, and id never drop it.
ya i playe EQ for like 2 years, and i left because of all that **edit** repedative crap. massive raids, to get phat lewts, to do harder massive raids, to get even better phat lewts, so eventualy one day when your Best of the Best tournment comes around you own the living crap out of them.
I played EQ for just that reason, to play in the mage best of the best contest, that day when it finaly came rofl my aol server went down for 16 hours, consequently after 2 years of eq i quit a week later.
I like PVP majorty or minority i dont give a crap, i play this game for PVP.
Greetings All,
This is a very interesting thread. I have enjoyed RPG's since the pen and paper days. Some of the time with the right people, it could be an experience I doubt will ever be matched. However, most of the poeple I had to play with were not those kinds of people. Constant bickering about rules anddamage, ridiculously outrageous solutions to problems, crying because you did something incredibly stupid and died, etc. etc.
All this made me question whether or not I would ever enter into the mmorpg arena. I decided a long time ago, only a Star Wars based mmorpg would entice me to enter an online world with other people. Well, as we all know, the time came, and Iwarily jumped in. I have always been a melee type, for well over 20 years now. I just don't find ranged fighting very satisfying. Of course my natural choice was the Brawler profession, particularly one-handed as I always had. I was a novice Fencer before heading up the unarmed tree.
Let me say first, I am a game hermit and spend 98% of my time going solo in PvE.I do thisfor a number of reasons. First, the one thing that's missing from this mmorpg is the RPG part. In the two months I have been playing, I have yet to meet a person who plays their character in a role playing manner. I would rather see an attempt and see a player bumble through it than encounter someone who doesn't even try. Alas, everyone I seem to interact with couldn't roleplay their way out of a paper bag.
Next, I have met very few people on my server that I would want to spend very little time in any manner on or off line. I am nearing 40 years old and was taught to treat others with dignity and respect. If one's character is meant to be roleplayed tough, it is possible to do so without being immature (which extends to all ages, not justyouth, believe me). The other night I had grouped with a novice TK. We were in a medical center in a rebel town and all he could say was "Rebs suck." Even when countered intelligently, no critical thoughtever sputtered from his mouth. I don't know if he was simply trying to get a rise out of the Rebels popping into and out of the room, but if he were, there were more intelligent ways to do so.
Lastly, and perhaps this is due to my own inexperience with groups, but I find grouping with players using ranged weapons fruitless. One of two things usually happen. First, whatever we are fighting gets killed before I get there. No fun for TK, and no XP. Or, the shooter will run and I can't catchup to assist. This is when I let them run around and get incapped. I then clean up everything up while they're liying on the ground. Sometime /taunt will work, but not often enough to do anyone any good. I'd like to hear some feedback on these thoughts.
Theline between FPS and RPG seems to be smearing. Look at Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind. It seems the line is also blurred here. For some, hunting real game (other players) is more challenging than shooting AI bots (for lack of a better term). Will everyone eventually look towards PvP? I don't know. As the game is right now, I'd say it would be inevitable. Either that or moving on to another game. It all depends on the long term goals of the developers and what becomes implemented in the future. However, by keeping the RPG part alive with good stories and better (much better) mission scenarios, PvE could last a long time.
In real life, I tend to create few, but very strong bonds with friends. I am definitely more the type to be in trouble with you than bailing you out. I have never seen the need for superfluous people in my life. I guess I can say my Galaxies lifestyle is similar. I am not without community altogetherand am enjoying the excitement of othersachievingtheir goals.
For me, PvP will not save the game for me. Better PvE, especially solo because not everyone enjoys being in a group, will do more to keep my monthly payment rolling more than anything else. Someone mentioned the freedom of solo PvE. I concur 100%.
Sorry for the long rant.
Cheers,
Pem
As an actuary (a mathematician of sorts focusing on probability and statistics), I can say fairly confidently that 11,000 responses out of 300,000 is a very good representative sample. Still it's a non-random poll and thus has some innate errors (biased against PvE I'd imagine), but to say that the result isn't representative is to be way off the mark, take your own advice and read up on statistics.
