Ya, drop them once your built up. until then, I switch back and forth, with it on my toolbar. I take them off when im about to do a move, like knockdown, then pop them back on for just normal beating. Then I didn't drain my stats, and still get better damage/speed.

VK's...our one and only weapon...well other than our hands but you can view it as hands with really sharp fingernails

VK's are essential when leveling TKA. You will use them almost your whole life until master. At master you get an insane speed, accuracy and damage boost. The reason tkm's don't use VK's as much is because they swing so damn fast that their HAM's reduce to nothing very fast because each punch uses a chunk of mind (and more action/health too) instead of just action without vk's. This has make many tkm's think that VK's are not worth using that much. I can say that with the new foods that is not the case now.

Most players I see pop a couple +200'ish vbrandies and dive into battle. This does not cut down vk HAM cost much so they still don't use them very often. I only use 360+ brandy (of course have mind stats maxed...I am Zebrak and don't even have as much as humans) and pop two of those, meditate and use low HAM vk's (a few HAM points less than most...only +11 attack instead of +20 but how often does a TKM miss anyway?). With this I can use VK's and my mind barely goes down at all.

Here is an example of insane VK use:

I like to solo ancient bull rancors when I see them. There is no way in hell I would bother to take 10+ or whatever minutes to beat them down without light armor pierce. Last one I killed I popped a 360+ vbrandy (happened to time it right so I tripple stacked them). Meditated and popped a muon gold. I was now sitting at just over 3000 mind and +1580'ish in substats. Seeing how state change attacks like knockdown are pointless on these things (the resist 95% or better) I just spammed unarmed hit 3 the whole fight. My mind didn't go down below 2900 and only because he might of actually hit my mind once. I wasn't wearing armor, never had to heal, I just filled the combate queue and sat back and watched as he eventually dropped.

Even not buffed by a doc I can use VK's with ease. I just have to watch my action a bit and throw the odd heal in. I only use against high resist critters though. The only draw back to vk's I can see when taking food into account is that your range is jack squat and you have to take them off to do things like lunge in pvp. Other than that you should be able to use them much more often than many think. You do a hell of a lot more damage with them when considering the AR multiplier. You can't just go by what your combat logs say.

Oh ya: you should be able to buy damn nice vk's for only 4 to 5k. I pick up several and slice away. I sell speed sliced ones in bazzar for 6k or give to noobs to help them out. At master you always want damage sliced. I would suggest tracking down low HAM vk's. A good weaponsmith can make good ones with +11 attack on them still.

Dropped Vk's when I hit master, it's a slight decrease in damage but you really don't noticeit.

Taidashan you do not read very well. Your question was answered in great detail.

As for everyone saying they don't notice much difference without vk's I can only say they must only be fighting quenkers or something because vk's make a HELL of a diff.

Anything with armor (there are a ton of things out there with armor) will take you 50% longer to kill without vk's and longer still if they have decent kinetic resists (that would be about all of them). On hunting trips with my usual group I often have to drop my rifle and go tka in order to help out others in trouble. They would have died many a tragic death if I had just used my hands because of the time it takes to beat something down with 40% or better light armor kinetic resists. Our last trip was killing some of those little evil ewoks. They have light armor but no additional resists. I tested how long it took to drop them with just hands and with vk's. Vk's dropped them almost twice as fast. Like I have said, you cannot go with what your combat log tells you for damage. It might say you hit for 1500 damage but you actually hit for 1100 or less if they have light armor and/or resists. With vk's you negate the light armor and hit for additional damage from the weapon it's self. In some cases (with the right resist ammounts) you will drop certain things twice as fast on average.

It is a nice perk to be able to be deadly with your hands only but the simple fact is that vk's are a weapon that adds to your base damage and gives you light armor piercing ability. Seeing how easy it is to reduce the HAM cost to almost nothing there is no real reason not to use them all the time is straight up fighting. About the only time I don't use them is when I haven't bothered to buff because things are so easy or I am not trying to embarress other professions who take 10 times longer to kill things than I do. The only bad thing I have to say about vk's is that content is moving toward harder and harder mobs and better and better armor (will see about that though when combat patch comes) and vk's allowing us slightly better kinetic damage may not cut it anymore. There will be a time when tka's will need another damage type.

I've found I usually go true unarmed and use hit3, if the thing has armor I use hit2, I avoid vks+hit3 like the plague, each hit cots me over 150 ham unbuffed that way. Though I've found it is possible to be buffed well enough to be able to use hit3 with vks, get a full set of high power doc buffs, get a musician buff with ur focus/will maxed out (dancer buffs don't hurt either), and fill up on brandy, the only pool you are losing when you use specials then is mind and not that much mind, you will be regenerating it as fast as you lose it (actually faster). Anyway what I really like about hit3 unarmed is the damage is consistantly good and the ham cost is about the same as hit2 with vks.

All of my mind stats are jacked up really high, it's left over from when I was a rifleman. But my other stats are all very weak. So for me it's easy:

if buffed = VK

if not buffed = no VK

With one or two brandies, in armor, I can still spam UH3 almost indefinitely.

Oh, and at higher levels, make sure you get a damage-sliced VK, not a speed-sliced one

I used to be a strong believer of no VK use. I went for about 4 months not ever useing a VK after I made master. Then, after mastering heavy swordsman and seeing how fast I could take out enraged rancors, I wonderd why I couldn't match this with tka. Well, VK's have light AP which you don't get when you don't use VK's. So, after useing VK's on enraged rancors I could take them out much easer. So, my answer to you would be... use both. Use nothing if what you're attacking has low kinetic resist and no armor. Soon as something has armor I'd almost always equip a VK.

I always VK (since mine are 46-253...Not the best, but decent) because I'm always buffed, powerboosted and on two Vasarian Brandies, so HAM doesn't even factor in. =)
