I still think something needs to be looked at here...give us master-level weapons that we can get from crafters (don't have to do quests to get powerhammers, I go to vendors!), and thus aren't worried about wearing them to pieces, or do something to make us more able to use our venerable VK's in combat. Don't get me wrong, it's kind of cool to know I can use my fists and feet to take down a Rancor (well, a low-level one unless I'm grouped), and unarmored at that, but part of our profession's identity is with our weapons. We're not *just* bare-fisted fighters, we're ones who use knucklers.
Not to mention, a Rifleman for instance can use a variety of weapons for different uses, and expect to do decent (probably excellent) damage with 'em all, enabling one to choose a fire-based weapon against fire-vulnerable foes for instance (only a for instance, I have no idea if fire-damage rifles exist). With my fists, I'm capped at a certain level of damage, and kinetic. I can equip a VK for energy damage, yeah, but my damage output goes in the toilet. Why equip a knuckler if I don't do much good with it against opponents of my level?
Part of a class's viability is its ability to adapt to different situations. I think this includes being able to do different kinds of damage. Which we can do now...but there's not a lot of reason to do so when doing so means we do different kinds, but less of it. I'm not a powergamer who *has* to do the most damage to everything, leave nuking to the Rifles crowd, but all the same I won't use a weapon that decreases the amount of damage I do, instead of increasing it.
If that makes a bit of sense
It's Friday, my brain's tired...
