Heres what I go for most the time
Unbuffed - Mid-level PvE (Creatures & NPCs)- Low encum. comp. (ocasionly a Sheild Gen as well if it's a harder NPC)
Buffed - Mid-level PvE (Creatures) - No armour.
Buffed - Mid-level PvE (NPCs) - Comp at the mo as I have no ranged mitigation but I'm working on geting something lower resists made.
Buffed - High-level PvE (Both) - Comp, differnt types obviously deppending on what I'm after.
Unbuffed PvP - None, normaly coming out the cloner & attacking again, I'll maybe put a helm on.
Buffed PvP - As much as I can, high level comp.
Generaly I do prefer to go for stuff that will not make stuff too easy. If I'm geting some Xp on Endor for my FS stuff I want a risk in dying, I don't wanna just sit there geting xp with no risk. I am working on geting some Padded Armour for when I hunt stuff like Mercs on Lok just as Comp is too much yet no comp & I die too quickly simply as I have no Ranged Mitigation.
At the end of the day though find what you find best for what you're doing & what makes it feel fun for you. I know alot of people can't stand the idea of trying to take out a wild Archane Webmaster lair without armour but other prefer the idea of geting their arse handed & seeing their not invincable.

Composite, as allways
PVE-80% kinetic suit with 12% stun (To keep those nasty nightsister stun batons away (no need to slice)
PVP- 40% stun armor sliced to 80%+
Also, you only need to wear gloves, boots, chest, and a helmet. This provides full protection with minimal encumberance.

None.
Or, at a push, a Composite Chest Plate and - if I really need it,matching helmet and boots.

fully buffed and unarmored I can take down a lair of Enraged Rancors in under 5 minutes.
armor is for sissies.
well...okay, I use it too...but only against NPC targets. The fact that I have no Ranged mitigation or defense kinda hurts. I usually then go for padded (it looks cool as heck) or composite (high-end content such as the DWB or corvette basically REQUIRES such armor).
Against most creatures I wear this outfit
shirt (forget the name) w/ +4 melee defense, +18 stun defense
Paramilitary Camo pants w/ +4 m.d., +18 s.d.
bandoleer w/ +4 m.d., +18 s.d
aakuan robe w/ +10 poison resist (great when hunting spiders)
wrapped boots--they just look good.
that works for me against 9/10ths of all creatures (I have medic)
