why do i use a pet?

it's the only partner i can trust. i've been in too many groups with tons of retards and end up diing against piddly mobs where i can take out higher level higher paying mobs solo.

have you guys even seen Star wars? you act like there are no creatures in the **edit** movie. Every race in the star wars galaxies had pets for battle (gungans) or pets for utility. Go WATCH the movies and you will see this. Creatures play a large role in star wars.

Now, you might argue, Luke never had a rancor follow him around... yah well Darth Vader didnt have a ATST follow him into cantinas either... I also cant remember ever seeing probots following people around, or a protocol droid that can keep pace with a human running at full speed... are you starting to understand yet?

CH is a valid profession in THIS GAME. If they arent, then remove ATSTs, remove droids, and everything else too.

Its amazing how many of you have probally never actually watched the movies.

Uhm, I've read at least half the books and seen all the movies. I know every starship in SW down to the blueprints and The Force as far back as -5000 ANH. Don't even try it. Creature Handlers were as common in SW as they are IRL. We have im sure a lot of them IRL but they aren't the focal point of anything. In SW creatures were not as rampant as they are in SWG. A lot of labor creatures were especially on Tatooine, but im not talking about everyone and his brothre with three graul maulers running around. Almost everyone had a droid of some sort as well. The only places where creature handling was very active was on non-technological planets such as Togoria and Dathomir for example. Either way the Devs are even aware of this issue. And I know AT-STs didndt do what they do in SWG, and I don't agree with them either. Just because I hate CH doesn't mean im biased to AT-STs. I always thought they should've just been vehicles to be used, not pets. Im not turning this into a continuity discussion.

Good thing you dont dpeak for the majority of people in this game who depend on pets to keep from getting owned.....The post was to help people out there who dont know where to go to get good XP and Money.

Have you noticed how many posts are here everyday about "I am a Novice TKA where should I go" or "What profession supplements TKA?"

They are out there bub and I dont see how you speak for those people since you know it all already....maybe if we all focus hard enough we can tap into your vast knowlege base and not have to make usless posts about how to get XP or How to get Money with minimal risk.....

When everyone gets to your level maybe we wont have to annoy you anymore.

Pets are pretty much a give-in for this game. theres no real reason NOT to have one in this game. if you dont like people saying 'send in your rock beetle' in guides they press the back button on your browser. nobody gives a rats ars what you think about the ch profession.

I agree completely with the original poster. It is annoying to be reading a post about TKA strategy and get "dood, all u have to do is send in the petz, blah blah". I guess I don't blame other people for choosing to dabble in CH... it is that powerful. I think it wasa design mistake by the devs to allow the class in the first place. They made a game where pets are more powerful than players... huge mistake. But that is not the player's fault for choosing the CH profession.

The original poster made an excellentpoint about keeping TKA strategy to TKA skills.Maybe it's just frustrating to see so many bandwagoners talking about skills unrelated to this forum. I am a TKA/Squad Leader (heaven help me) because I have hope the SL profession will be fixed and I believe in GROUPS... not solo. Therefore when I read a post and see CH tips, I lose interest and leave the thread, possibly missing good TKA tidbits in there.

I think the problem is two-fold:

1) The code used to determine aggro is poor, therefore making people feel they must have pets in order to live. DAoC did a great job with the aggro-juggle. That wasa huge part of the fun, trying to keep the mobs on the tanks while so much else was going on. Aggro in SWG is so one-sided.

2) People solo too often. They want to be gods on their own and have no sense of teamwork. They really on AI pets as their teammates. Go find some people to group with. Discover the beauty in the variety of professions and learn how they mesh together. Find some medics who can keep you healed so you don't have pause to heal yourself. YOU will be the tank and not some brainlesscat that has 5 times the HAM you do. You will be a part of a group... some larger and better than you yourself are alone.

Whenever I've grouped with powerful pets, whether CH or AT-STs, I feel dirty inside. Letting something else do the work while my lazy butt reaps the xp. That's not my style.

I don't think you quite got it. I'm very aware there are a crapload of people who don't know where the best XP spots are or methods of getting them. But for using CH to get them its not even remotely rocket science. It's common sense. And to the schlep who said it's necessary to have pets in this game, go eat your face. I'm Master Brawler and near master TK I've never used a single pet in getting to where I am. I'm a Star Wars fan not a **edit** fan. If I were to follow your advice and hit the back button everytime I came to a guide with CH as the focal point of getting the XP, I'd probably have to do it 98% of the time. I created a thread about a month or two ago that was very mature and constructive and we all had great ideas and suggestions that actually 95% of the posts had nothing to do with CH so its definitely possible to create a guide such as that.

There is absolutely no point in dabbling in CH. None. The reason you take up any combat class is to be able to function with that class. If you've found that CH has become the mainstay of your combat performance. By all means go full CH, I have absolutely no clue why you'd go any other class and dabble in it. And this being a blow up post doesn't mean im wrong, because I sure am not wrong about this issue. Probably why I got like 3 stars on the post and you both got one starred.

Anywho, whatever. I got my message out and you caught on hook-line-and-sinker Xeonus

Well no one complains when someone hints about "use an armor", but a lot of I-wanna-be-melee guys whine and moan when people mention a rock beetle, or another non-ch pet.

There is no real difference between an armor or a rockbeetle. Both can be bought from another class, both can be used by everyone, both help you gain xp by keeping you safe. If you don't want to use it, fine. Then don't. If you REALLY don't want to use it, come and whine on this board

I personally agree that pets make too much of a difference in melee classes. That's right, I'm only saying melee. Why? I've seen many a marksman (or a derived elite profession) go down easily from something I could kill solo in a few seconds. They have no melee defense, in fact they suffer a penalty in melee. For them CH is necessary to do anything if they're not in groups or have a tka/brawler handy to do the tanking. By the way, even if there is a pet around you WILL be tanking, go up to anything and hit it for 1800 dmg and see if it pays attention to the rock beetle anymore.

I will provide some tips I think might help people solo and getgood xpwithout a pet, they've helped me. There is nothing new here, just maybe someone new will read it:

1. Learn to effectively use debuffs- It will lessen the damage you take and I find it also makes the creature more susceptible to a KD if you have that available. I usually lead with stun (if the creature isn't an aggro or a little out of my league otherwise intimidate might work better first), then intimidate and blind. Reapply if one of them doesn't stick, but DON'T sit there all day apply initimade until it sticks, you will die. So for instance, apply stun, doesn't stick? apply intimidate, doesn't stick? apply blind, ok that one stuck, now try stun again, or intimidate, if one more takes move on, if you're having trouble come back and apply the rest.

2. Learn to single pull. Someone posted some tips on single pulling creatures from the lair awhile ago, it was a good guide and it works (I wish I could remember the url to the guide). If dealing with aggros, walk up to the furthest seperated aggro, let him detect you, he'll start running. run away until you are a good distance from the lair (you should figure this out before hand, I've found anything about 70m is more than enoughbut it depends on the creature), then start attacking. The aggro is out of the assist range of it's friends so it's just you and him. When dealing with non-aggro creatures that may team up on you, do the same except target one of them with your vks equipped or unarmed and hit attack, this will aggro the creature and maybe on of his friends, again you want to run.. most likely only one of them will follow or one will lose interest before you get to your attack spot. You can do this over and over and over. You'll get better at it and faster. I can solo red consall day doing this with no problems.

3. Find out what you can handle. This is the most importantthing if you want to gain xp quickly. If you cantake down a red con that's great, but if it drains yourHAM so bad you need a 3 minute break after every fight you're not being effective. Find something white or yellowthat you can kill without needing more than a10 second mind regen in between. For me,onceI hit tka novice I moved to yavin4 and started with mamians. At the time they didn'tgroup attack soyou could just move from one to the next with no issues, now they are social so it doesn't work as well forthat early xp but you could use the techniques described above to pull them out. Now,(I'm still a novice tka) I can take on much larger stuff so I do, I think Piket longhorns are my new favorite. I canjust sit around all day killing pikets, pulling them out one by one. They are red cons to me.. butI can blow through themusing all the stuff I've provided here.So just fight stuff until you find out what gives you the best xp with the least damage taken.

On buffing and spice...

I've never sought out a doctor buff, but I've never turned down a free one (as they're usually just thrust upon me). You don't NEED them. You can do it without any buffs but I will say that it makes it faster. That's all. If you could take down 3 of your target creatures without a buff, you can most likely take down 5 or 6 if you've taken muon (becareful of the downer) before needing to rest at all. I use spice occasionally, the downer will hurt your efficiency in one way (you're fairly useless with your 150 mind bar) but you can kill faster while on it so there are tradeoffs.

So that's it. Soloing isn't that hard, I'm not a master tka so I can't talk about soloing kimo's or anything. But I can take down lot's of red con creatures by myself with no pets. Try it, you might like the strategy involved I know I do. Also, if you have KD don't forget to use it, after the debuffs of course. And if you don't have kd get it, the Power line is important and helps a TON but I would spend that first 175K on Balance I and then go power. Once you hit power 4 and have KD you are a force.

Now, I'm going to counter this entire post..

As a final note, if you don't think you can solo or haven't had any luck with it find yourself a group. Groups are fun and can be profitable (in xp atleast). You'll gain skills and when you feel you're ready, you can solo. Just travel to dathomir or another advanced planet and you're almost guaranteed to find someone looking to group up. However, good luck finding a group without pets, it's almost impossible.
