melee mitigation doesn't stack, there are 3 levels... Melee mitigation 1, 2, and 3.
at level 1 there is a 20% dmg reduction,
level2 there is a 40% damage reduction,
level 3 there is a 60% damage reduction.

In other words, it's an ability not a bonus. They don't add up to each other. If you have melee mitigation 1 in two professions, you only have melee mitigation 1.
The good thing is, though, that mitigation takes effect no matter what weapon you use. If you have melee mitigation, it works even if you're using a ranged weapon. The same goes for ranged mitigation. That's one reason why it's good to have both a melee and a ranged profession, so that you can get both kinds of mitigation.

I was under the impression that this was changed a long time ago?
I think you only get melee mitigation if you are holding a melee wep and ranged mit if you are holding a ranged wep ??
I hope I am wrong.

i was under the impression only melee mit worked with melee and ranged with ranged.... otherwise i have no idea why I am hitting a m pistoleer for alot more damage then i hit him when he pulls out knuckler..

Rejoice, because you are.

There may still be damage bonuses associated with using melee against a ranged opponent. I've seen people say that they were changed (they certainly existed at one time), but I've never found anything in patch notes or developer announcements. So you may be doing more damage against that pistoleer because you do more damage against anyone wielding a gun.
Also, don't forget that you can have up to 57 unarmed toughness, and as I understand it that translates to 57% damage reduction. That *only* works when you have no weapon equipped or a VK (that's why it's called "unarmed" toughness). So assuming that the master pistoleer is also a TKM, you'd be doing nearly twice as much damage against him when he has a pistol because he loses that toughness.

It changed in February from a damage bonus to a to-hit bonus. Here are the patch notes.

Honestly they need to get rid of melee mitigation.
Why, exactly?

Thanks for the link Antares. Really helpful.
However, all it said was, "Melee attackers now get a To Hit bonus when attacking targets with ranged weapons." It didn't say that the damage bonus was removed. I think it was, but that post doesn't show it.

Because people can solo Krayts, GDK, the most Elite Nightsisters, and tank a Lightsaber wielding Jedi for 15 minutes? A different form of melee mitigation...might actually makes things challenging again.
...and I'll use my response I always use, "If combat wasn't broken...there wouldn't be a Combat Balance." The changes will come in due time, and then we'll really see how different everything is.
I for one, predict squad leader to be the dominant profession.

Try it out. A 1.5x damage bonus would be noticeable, it's simply not there anymore.

I would think it's the 90% Armor and buffs, but hey whatever floats your boat
