... with the word "nerf?"
Why is it that just because something changes, or that there is fear of something changing, that "nerf" cries go up everywhere?
Changes could be great, and one aspect affected in a way that makes it less appealing than it was before, and you will have people screaming that things are horrible. I never have understood that mentality, and thought it might be an interesting exercise to have everyone give their take on why "nerf cries" fascinate so many.
Just to clear up any thoughts, I know what a "nerf" is (though I really hate the term, but that is just me being nitpicky as even I'll use it to convey a point), what I want to know is why does everything have to be a "nerf?"

In my eyes I think theres a few reasons for it.
People always look at it as a half empty glass I guess. & I gotta say it never ceases to get on my nerves.
I can see reasons for people been sceptical about the future changes happening but the problem is so few people ever think the Devs will really come through. On something like the CU/R/B it gets even more anoying simply as they don't realise that so much for the changes will be down to all of us, the gamers.
Another of the common problems on it is they don't see the current systems as been a problem, it was the same when I player PlanetSide, in this case though I think people think they play the game to be the hero of the game, & don't realise that the whole combat system is out of whack at the moment as everything is too easy. So I guess looking at it that way it is a nerf in one way. But then to many of us, it's puting things right & taking out the god mode options.
As well as this I think so many people are just lazy. Insted of talking of their fears of the problem they try to sumerize it. So insted of "I think TK is overpowered, maybe if this happened it would balance you, what do you think?" people try to force their veiws without a) Giving a real reason b) Been willing to take in other peoples veiws & say stuff simply as "Nerf TK!" & thats it & then will resort to similar methods when people disagree by simply saying "No you're wrong! Nerf TK!"
Personly I find theres some instances (like one of the more recent on this forum) where people just have worries but can't voice them well, this type I reply to & hope they add more to their worries. But there are others (like the type that seem to come up on this forum alot) which I find I'll look at the thread once just so I know I've "looked" at it& don't tred in to it later, in this case I often don't even read past the first line.
I know that doesn't really answer your question but thats just my veiw on it & to be honnest I never really look in to it much more when time could be better spent talking to someone who asks for help or takes time to explain their problems.

people hate change....its human nature.
we have a system that is borked...but can be exploited (and i don't mean cheat) those people that have worked the system to their advantageare the most resistant to the change. (mainly because they areinherently lazy and don't want to learn a new system)
i do agree that "nerf" is over used. however, most of the changes occuring do "weaken" toons. i doubt you would hear anyone cry nerf if something was made stronger.
ex: when the powerboost timer was extended, no one cryed nerf even though it was a change to the status quo.
to simplify:
people complain when any perceived negative change affects them or a positive change affects their competition. it will never stop. it is part of what makes us who we are.

Nerf the forums!!!
On a side note, i agree with the lot of you. "Nerf" has taken on the definition of "make me weaker, while you get stronger." And you have to remember the insane number of "uber-L337 doodz" that play this game. Anything they perceive as a weakening of their power will be looked upon as bad mmmkay? And the only way to level the playing field is to "nerf" everyone else to the same perceived level of strength.

I don't know about you guys, but I used to have fun shooting all my friends with Nerf weapons and having huge Nerf wars when I was a kid. Sure they are weaker then real weapons, but they're hella fun.

Why do a lot of people think everything is a......*shudder*....nerf?
It is because we are raised in a society that does not put a high value on equality ora level playing field. We arebrought up in aculture where the cutthroat, get to the top any way you can mentality is the gold standard. In an enviroment like that, you are not going to find many people who are willing to give up their power or privilage easily.

To make a "clicky" you have to edit in HTML (and don't go back to graphical editing or you lose the HTML). The syntax would be:
<a href="url">title</a>

It's simple.
To nerf is to make something weaker (as Nerf sports products are made of foam rubber). When something is reduced in power or effectiveness it is considered to be nerfed, even if it was previously overbalanced. Nerfs can be a good thing, like when Warcry was nerfed (that ability was insane before).
The reason why people call "nerf" on almost any change is because people don't like change, and to them to change something is to make it worse and thus it is a "nerf" even when it really isn't.
