Thread: Having serious doubts about defence skills working fully...(long)
From my testing I've found that melee defense coming from another line doesn't count AT ALL unless you're holding that type of weapon.
Thus in your fights the only stats counted were the ones in the Unarmed and TKA line.
Try this for a test.
Have opium hold a sword and have Vindicate hit him. I bet it will be for the same damage.
Now have vindicate hold asword (which he has no melee defenseskill in)and have opium hit him. (unarmed)
My tests have shown that although I have meleedefense from TKA it doesn't help when holding a pistol, sword or any other weapon. I'll get hit the same as my buddy who has no TKA or melee defense.
Then in the middle of the fight I can unequip my sword or gun and my damage drops.
So all those who thought they were combining defenses are sorely wrong.
These are the exact types of combat logs needed for SOE to get their head out of their Arses.
Anything else without logs, stats and number crunching will be construed as player whining and they will simply be ignored.
whilst engaging in a couple of duels with another Teras Kasi Master i tried to figure out some things related to defence.
things to note:
we are both zabrak
vanticateis a Teras Kasi Master and near Master Doctor (NO other fighting professions)
melee defence : 32
unarmed toughness : 57
opiium isa Teras Kasi Master and Master Fencer
melee defence : 56
unarmed toughness : 57
i thought that by taking a second melee line i could decrease the chances of myself getting hit, or at least lessen the damage somewhat whilst fighting.
the fight: NO vibro knuckles were used.
opiiumgets hit by 8 spitting rawls (unarmed hit 3) in a row : 376, 377, 381, 363, 367, 351, 360, 372 (note this was spammed 8 times, spitting rawl hits on average 5 or 6 times, the first hit being the highest. so none of the secondary hits were counted) - opiium was wearing NO ARMOUR
vanticategets hit by 8 spitting rawls (unarmed hit 3) in a row : 374, 355, 366, 360, 373, 367, 375, 355- vanticate was wearing NO ARMOUR
-------------------
vanticategets hit by 8 spitting rawls (unarmed hit 3) in a row : 358, 355, 351, 358, 371, 367, 375, 357 - vanticate was wearing FULL STORMTROOPER ARMOUR
now because the stormtrooper armour has 30% kinetic protection each piece, these were the amounts absorbed by vanticate: 232, 230, 226, 232, 241, 238, 194, 184
meaning that the actual damage vanticate took was: 126, 125, 125, 126, 130, 129, 181, 173
-------------------
well at least we know that armour works. the damage absorption is very, very good. taking near 60% from each one of my hits.
what i'm curious to find out more about is melee defence, more specifically what does it do? with no armour our damage outputs were near identical and neither of us missed yet i have an extra 20 points to melee defence.
A better way to test the effectiveness would be to have both players fight NPC/mobs instead of each other. Parsing the logs over several fights with the same type of mob will give the most accurate results.
You will find that the player with the higher melee defense will be missed more often than the player with the lower value. Though I have no logs to prove it, I can testify from experience that melee defense does work and work very well. Since working up the Fencer and Rifleman defense trees, I have noticed NPCs missing me a lot more than when I was only TKM.
The only mystery about it is wether or not there're any soft or hard caps to a skill. Personally, I don't think there are any. Every point you raise your skill has real value, though it isn't necessarily substantial. Even if it means being missed one or two extra times during the course ofa fight, that more than justifies putting the time in to raising the skill, especially with the upcoming PvP damage reduction.
"Were these numbers taken from the combat chat box, or the numbers that floated above each of your heads as the moves were spammed? If they were taken from the chat box, then this is the raw damage delt before any resistances or defense is taken into consideration... "
the numbers were taken from both of our combat boxes. the details in the combat boxes show changes to damage with defence taken into account. for example, when i hit vindicate with his armour on it would show 358, 355, 351, 358, 371, 367, 375, 357 inopiiums box. however in vindicates combat box, it would say "you have absorbed 232, 230, 226, 232, 241, 238, 194, 184 damage" from each of my hits.
"From my testing I've found that melee defense coming from another line doesn't count AT ALL unless you're holding that type of weapon"
the skills you are referring to are: one-handed melee toughness, unarmed toughness, polearm toughness etc. these only come into play if you are fighting unarmed vs unarmed, 1h sword vs 1h sword, or polearm vs polearm. meaning that because you are a master with these types of weapons, you are less likely to be hit/take as much damage from them.
however the skill in question here is the one that stacks REGARDLESS of what weapon you have equipped. melee defence. obviously because we are both Teras Kasi Masters, our unarmed toughness is exactly the same, so our defence against each others attacks would be equal.
it was my intention to test how effective melee defence is and what it brings about in terms of less damage taken/misses/etc
"A better way to test the effectiveness would be to have both players fight NPC/mobs instead of each other. Parsing the logs over several fights with the same type of mob will give the most accurate results"
pve isn't my main intention, i want to see if i have a true advantage over other players in terms of my defensive skills. i will work on some stats vs pve and see how that goes. but its defence against another player that is my main concern
I was under the impression that melee defense increased your chances of evading an attack on you (by this I mean them missing)by a melee.
They are not working. Pistoleers have posts on this subject with detailed tests to prove it is not.
Unarmed toughness IS working but as far as I can tell everything else is broken....especially knockdown defense which we get a huge bonus towards.
Rifle users should fear melee right? I fear everyone. All they need to do is spam knockdown.....I've never resisted it once whereas I should be resisting it 90% of the time.
