Thread: Do tailors still make lots of credits?

I remember browsing through the tailor forums about 3 months after SWG was released, and reading posts where tailors claimed to be earning 500-600K creds per day. Does that still apply?

The reason Im asking is that I want to pick up a fun crafting prof that also has a good return, and I thought tailor would be pretty cool. Any advice?

I doubt you'll find many tailors that are doing it for the credits. Really, though, after so many millions, does it even matter anymore?

Not counting BE enhancments, the most expensive single common item i sell is worth 5000, thats for a revieling fleshwrap.

Truly the only reason to become a tailor is to dress ppl up, Socialize with customers while dressing them up, and to experiment on what may look good with all the different design opstions and colors that are out there.

It does take a touch of imagination to get a good look. and be original on the clothing name. Most ppl would buy a special named artical of clothing instead of the game given name article.

here is a example

Game given Name : Paramilitary Camos

Creators name : Endorian Spec-Ops Military Camos

what would you buy 1st, the generic name, or the cool sounding name

I am a very casual crafting player. I don't do a lot of custom orders (except for my guild) and I don't stock 1000's of items. I stock a small selection of clothing and when that sells I make more. Its not a huge sum of money for my business but I find there is a lot of impulse buying with my clothing vendor. People will come in to the store and buy vehicles or housing stuff and then there is a single clothing purchase..the obivious inference is they were there for other thing and found the clothing and couldn't resist. I don't have exact figures on my income from clothing but its enough to keep me doing it. I suspect if I applied myself I could make a decent living from it.

Oh, right, I should mention that Tailoring has been great for meeting others. I've made some very profitable connections that wouldn't have been made otherwise. So, if you're flexable and have some merchanting skills (game skills and real ones), it can be quite helpful that way too.

I've been a tailor pretty much since beta, for what my advice is worth.

That advice being... If you're going for Tailor to get rich, think again. As others have said, it's not a huge money-maker. Forget 500-600k a day... 100k on the best of days, with loyal customers and after a lot of hard work, is a more practical estimate. And it'll take you some months to build up that kind of clientele. If you're looking for profit, tailor is not the craft to go with. Armorsmiths pull in the most, weaponsmiths are next, droid engineers come after (depending on server and patches), and tailors will always come last.

Having said that, it's a profession I've always been in and my tailor is the only character I play. I wouldn't dream of dropping it, regardless of how little I make or how overlooked we are by the devs. It's that satisfying for me. But you'll find that tailors who stick with it are a rare breed.

If designing clothing is something that appeals to you, and you have a bit of merchant blood in your veins, go for it. The Tailor Forum will always be here to offer you advice and assistance. But if you're looking for something to make a killing with in the market, drop that clothing repair tool, pick up some armor layers and get to work.....

I've been very careful not to do that for two reasons.

Firstly, 6 months down the line someone might ask for a new pair and I'll be racking my brains trying to remember what they were. Of course, the customer has accidently deleted them so I can't check the generic name.

Secondly, there will be tailors after me and I'd hate to put them through that as well!

Ok, so callingthem apair of Paramilitary Camos is not overly exciting, but at least the customer knows exactly what they are getting, and buying/making a replacement issimple.

That is a pretty good point. I like it better when my customers ask for something by name so I know exactly what they want.

The thing is I only do custom on the spot orders and hardly have any clothing on my vendor. So the more knowledgeable a customer the more effecient service I can give.

And on another note I don't do this to make money that is for sure. I run sales for an armorsmith and work off a comission which has been doing me well. But I love to meet people, be social and enjoy crafting which is why I choose this profession after being an architect and armorsmith. I will be sad when I end up dropping this and learning to make ships but you have to just go with your calling. Even though I am still heartbroken over dropping dancer to go musician just because I hardly see any musicians these days and want to be able to buff the secondaries.

Ya I agree you do not pick up Tailor for money, now I did it cause I would go and see tailors and try to custom order stuff and never get replies from Tailors, so I decided well dang it I like making cloths so I will become one and do orders for everyone, well to say the least I've had very few custom orders and I make maybe at my best 100k a day , sometimes a week, and that's counting the stuff I sell as a Master Artisan as well... It is a shame really that more people don't shop to look well and another problem is that clothing is still equipable after it is at 0, so that has made our profession very difficult for repeat customers, cause once they have everything they pretty much don't need anything....

heh well put it this way, i had 3mil credits before i started leveling up tailor...when i became master i had 1mill 100k creds, and currently, a month after mastering about, i have 1 mill 300k creds ... not a very good money maker, but its fun to do because you dont have to worry about quality...my highest item is 15k for...the revealing fleshwrap...heh wow now i kinda feel expensive compared to an above reply...of course i am hoping that if i start to make be clothes, and promote myself a bit more i will make more money...

The one thing that I'd say about tailors and earning credits, is that tailor is probably the easiest profession to earn say 10k/day but probably the most difficult to earn say 1mil/week. A lazy tailor could do no harvesting, simply buy a few very very common things on the bazaar, and hand craft 5 items or so a day, and earn that 10k/day in profit. No customer interations, no harvesting, no store to maintain, and no fuss. I've got a combat toon on a different server from my tailor now, and all he has is dom art 3, and even he can earn decent money making clothing and putting it on the bazaar. But the thing is, it doesn't scale. For a tailor to make a million credits he/she would have to sell hundreds - thousands of individual clothing items, and that doesn't happen quickly.

A chef or a be can throw a bunch of high quality stuff in a factory, make a few sales, and have a million credits in the twinkling of an eye. Weaponsmiths and armorsmiths too. Even architects and droid engineers have items that sell in excess of 100k, so credits can add up very very quickly. Not for tailor. The amount of effort you have to expend to make say a million credits really is pretty disproportionate to the other crafting professions.

Oh, one kind of amusing thing at fanfest, was someone asked one of the producers how many credits someone would need until he would consider him/her "rich". His reply? Around 100mil or so. Any "rich" tailors out there? lol, certainly not me.

For some weird reasons I have been selling about 50 item per day lately. My advice if you want a lot of work is to set a well stocked vendor in a mall, where there isn't already a tailor of course. People don't go to tailor vendors so much but if they are around and see something they like, they will buy it.

When I was in a busy mall I'd probably sell maybe 25/day or so, and it was dreadful. I probably enjoyed the game less during that time than any other time. You don't restock for 1 day, and the next you have to craft 50 items. Take a weekend off, and you're talking 75 items you have to craft when you get back. And if you slack for a week whilerunning missions orhunting or heck even if you have a rash of custom orders to do, that puts you in such a hole that it's almost impossible to recover from. I can only imagine what 50 a day would be like.

/shiver

And even at that rate, and even at my really high prices, the credits didn't even add up that fast. We're talking maybe a couple hundred k a week gross, and a lot less than that net.
