hehe... no, you don't get 20 tells a second.. I maybe sell umm..10-15 items a day making 40-50K on a good day.
I only play a few hours in the evening so I mostly sell through my vendors ... and I make about 30-50k on a weekday and 50-100k a day on the weekend.
And yeah ... I get a TON of tells. I swear folks must have me on the "friends" list because I get tells even before my character fully logs in. Had one guy last night that contacted me the sec I logged in and flew to Tatooine from Dalomir (or however it is spelled) to get a couple of outfits made.
But I treat each tell as special since it is this type of customer loyalty that keeps me from worrying one bit about the tailors that sell master stuff for 2k.
I think the amount you make varies greatly by your method of sales. I've made 200k creds in the last two days now and can't hardly keep my vendor stocked with anything decent, though this is a new and perhaps short term development. Prior to the last couple days my sales were more in the 20-50k per day range.
Also, I don't seem to get a lot of tells, maybe 3 or 4 custom orders per average day between tells and emails. Your mileage may vary depending on where your shop is, if you have a shop, and word of mouth.
After harvesters, and purchasing meats, I clear about 200k a day.
I am Tailor/Bio Engineer.
And 20 tells a second is an understatement, I usually just turn on AFK and have people mail me questions. 
It depends on the market, the population, the server, and your level.. *laughs*
At Novice, I was making enough to cover costs, and absolutely nothing extra left over -- but I was starting to build a customer base, which helped a lot later. At Field Wear III, I was starting to make a small profit, and a good number of emailed requests. By the time I'd hit Field and Formal IV, I was besieged with requests and making maybe 30k per day...however, I wasn't taking advantage of the vendor bug which allows you to sell items on your NPC vendor for a very low price; instead, I was selling mostly in person and on the bazaar.
Now, at Casual/Field/Formal IV, I can barely keep up with the requests, make maybe 40K per day (enough to cover the last bit of grind to master), and have to occasionally set myself AFK, because of the masses of tells. *laughs* The change is huge, but really.. do not expect to be making huge amounts of cash for quite some time. Those first three weeks were nightmarish.
Well i don't make this kind of money any more since there are a lot more masters but;
I was the first master tailor on Bria. I have made 1 million credits in a single day.
I still make a good 200k a day if i bother to.
I have made of 16 million in the game total.
To make a lot of money you can't fill custom order and you just keep filling the vendors with what people want.

I honestly don't add up how much I make per day. Sometimes it depends on how much stuff I have on my vendors. I can't keep it stocked which is nice but also means I am probably losing some money.

I've found as a novice tailor grinding away i'm making no profit whatsoever -- The only tells I get are asking for Master Tailor or other high level items. Sometimes it gets to the point where I need to break my grinding to run some missions to get the money to keep my vital resource harvesters from burning to the ground
However when you CAN make the higher level stuff then you'll probably make a pretty penny -- just make sure you've got a backup source of funding to get you through the low-level grinding
I can make 30K a day in my component sales business. I've all but given up selling clothes, I just can't seem to draw anyone to my shop, and clothes on the bazzar get lost in the noise. Components are easier to get sold on the bazzar. Plus my vendors 'forgot' what they where selling 2 nights ago, always a fun thing...
30K revinue, 25K profit.

Out of curiosity, how much do you sell your components for?
It varies enormously how much I sell from day to day. Being a Euro player, i think i miss a lot of custom from the US players. However this works well for the other master tailors close by me who then get a whole different group of customers! (There are 3 of us in very close proximity to each other)
A lot of how much I make during a day depends enormously on how much time i have to restock my vendor with items which sold the previous night.
I generally make between 70 - 90k profit a day during the week, normally more during the weekends. I think, like most tailors, I have a customer base that wont shop anywhere else which always provides a lot of repeat business for me.
It also helps that I have a dancer on my second account meaning that I spend a great deal of time in the cantinas wearing my own clothes
Oh! and I firmly believe in keeping shop displays to the best that you are able. I spend a lot of time changing around my displays and making sure the items hung on the walls are all even. A lot of people go to tailors stores wanting a specific item but leave with many more "impulse buys". When it comes down to it, clothes in this game are eye candy, spend time making them look the best that you can and it will pay off. Its also our job to think up new and interesting outfit ideas. A plain shirt on a vendor may look really boring, but when we have taken the time to choose out pants or jackets that match nicely with it and make a display...... the customer is more likely to buy it

p.s. Another thought! always always always try to make sure that the items you have on display are available on the vendor. I know from times before i began tailoring how annoying it is to visita tailor's shop, see that "must have" outfit and then discover there is nothing remotely similar on the vendors. You can't rely on customers to then mail you and order them, they may just choose to go get it somewhere else (chances are that they will know the itemname at that point to give to another tailor)
If you put it on display, put it on the vendor!
