Thread: First Rule of Beta. DON'T Talk About Beta!

I keep seeing information and images about the JtL Beta being leaked out here and there and everywhere. I know it's common that most people never read a single word, much less all of a document like the Terms of Service (TOS), the End User's License Agreement (EULA), or a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). In the case of a beta test of a game, the person has tacitly agreed to the terms of all three types of these documents.

So why is all this forbidden information leaking out? They didn't read the docs. They didn't read the warnings posted in the forums. They didn't listen to anyone who said, "Don't talk about beta." "Don't post pics of beta anywhere." Or they don't know what the word "non-disclosure" means. Or they don't care and think there will be no consequences.

First Rule of Beta. Don't Talk About Beta. Don't post information about beta in any forum except the Beta forum. Don't tell a friend/relative about Beta. They might tell someone else and YOU are still liable for the leak and it is YOU who will suffer the consequences. They are serious about Beta people. They are enforcing the NDA. Lawyers get involved.

Second Rule of Beta. Don't post images from Beta anywhere. You cannot garauntee any linked images are secure. Posted images are forbidden, even in the Beta Forums. If you have any images, save them until after the NDA is lifted.

Third Rule of Beta. Don't Share Your Beta Account.

Disclosure: 1. To expose to view, as by removing a covert:uncover. 2. To make known (something heretofore kept secret).

NON-Disclosure: To NOT talk about it. To keep a secret.

How many of you have had people beg and plead with you to leak information about Beta? *raises her hand*

How many of you have had people beg and plead with you to post images from Beta? *raises her hand*

How many of you have had people beg and plead with you to let them borrow your Beta account for just a little while? *raises her hand*

Who gets kicked out of Beta, perma-banned, account cancelled and legal action pursued if the information, images or illegal use of your account gets reported or discovered? *raises her hand*

You. Not them. You.

Is it worth it? No. Just say no.

Do. Not. Talk. About. Beta.

Humans have choice - to be weak-willed or strong-willed

It's that kind of attitude that lands people in jail. Don't do the wrong thing because it's easyand you might not get caught. By the same token, don't do the right thing because you mightGET caught. Do the right thingout of respect for yourself and others.

I totally agree Qitu. it's an agreement that must be held.

But, there is also another issue to consider. Courtesy.

There are many people like me who do not really want to try the beta, rather we'd like to wait for JTL to be released and experience the whole thing freshly from the very start. I want to be able to say "Oooooh, aaaaahh, WHEEE!"... I don't want to load it and think to myself "Now I have to start all over, I wish my beta toon would have transfered " or "So this is what i read all about on the forums!"

While I agree with the post and certainly I believe people should not talk about the beta while the NDA still applies its place in law is still open to confusion. I stand corrected but I dont believe anyone has been punished outside of the games companyown limited actions ( ie banning people) for breaking NDA's in this open beta style(IE unlike in business when physical contracts have been signed)

The biggest problem is they dont have any proof that it was you that clicked the agree button unlike in Business NDA's where phyiscal contracts are not signed. So while you should not break the NDA talk of lawers coming down on you is just scare tactics. I hope people here are bright enough to know its wrong without making silly threats.

I think the profusion of posts that are now edits or deletions is proof enough that people really aren't all that bright.

Since you are responsible for your account and all actions taken under your logon, it doesn't matter whether they can prove it was you that clicked the button. The account holder could be held liable.

Its also a *beta*! Its not even the last beta since there are very few people in it right now (just the fanfest people as far as I know). People get excited that certain things are in the beta or they get mad because of other things and the fact is that any of it might change drastically by the time it gets released.

Ummmm...not being in beta I haven't read the NDA, but isn't admitting that you are in beta in violation of it?

Like I said, I haven't read theirs, but I know for at least one other game, even admitting openly that you are a beta tester is in violation of the agreement and put you at risk of getting kicked.

at first it was, but then Garva confirmed that it's ok to say you're in beta. *shrug*
