Thread: IS tailor worth the effort, money wise?
Hi all I have just gitten to novice tailor and after switching from general crafting to tailoir xp im finding it 2 things very slow and very expensive.
I am not a full on artisan, im a combat person who has opted to not get 2 full elite combat professions and go for full tailor prof to master.
But after getting this far I have already spent like 100k on ore and stuff to grind for xp and after reading some posts on sales prices of master outfits of 2k-8k does this profession make enough money .
I mean like 1 gun from ORIGINS gunsmith on my server goes for 100k and composite armour is astronomical and droids go for 25-50k each so is tailoring worth teh effort for the little rewards?
I dont want people putting me off just caus i have doubts i would like to know are they making alot of money like the other professions.
1 droid engineer who sells R3 droids for 50k has a PA hall and says he is loaded with cash so do we make money like that?
I feel your pain ![]()
I also just reached Novice Tailor, except I haven't spent 100k making it up the Artisan tree.... I'm almost Master Artisan, and I've spent maybe 30k on resources for grinding it. I did Wire Mesh Traps until Weighted Wookie Hoods, each only takes Hides and Bones, which are pretty cheap on the bazaar I think. Now though, dear lord. I'm grinding ribbed shirts and they are so expensive. They require 30 of fiberplast, and 30 metals. Well I have 2 Wind Harvestors, 2 Fiberplast Harvestors and 1 Metal Harvestor atm. I've used most of my Fiberplast and Metal towards grinding, and my Wind Energy is put in the other harvestors, and the left overs are sold on the Bazaar. Only problem is, no ones really buying it
I started trying to sell 300 units for 900 each, but after about 3 days I only sold maybe 2 of these, out of like 8. So I now sell 300 units for 600, and 1000 units for 2000. They sell a bit better, but not as much as I'd like, I've even tried putting some on Bazaars around the galaxy.
But, I find it helps taking 2 survey artisan missions to one of your harvestors that you know is 70%+ and between 512m-1500m away from the terminal. Then just keep running those missions back and forth, you can get each mission for 900cr, and all you have to do is survey at your harvestor. While running to your harvestor craft some items. Then after awhile take the resources out of your harvestor, and buy resources off the Bazaar if your crafting faster than the harvestor. It's somewhat painful and boring...but I find its not too bad.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Tailoring is not for the type of person that's in it to grind and achieve or someone who just wants to make money.
This is a social profession, almost as much as entertaining. You do it 'cos you like outfitting people, or you just grind up to the cloaks and dusters and sell those for 2-3k apiece.
I just made Master Tailor and I'm extremely proud, but I'm also dreading the slew of messages asking me to "maek me looks sexxie! I wan ta fleshwarp! Can i trade u this cloak?" Hopefully, I'll be spared this, as I've had pretty good luck thusfar. (I barely ever get "make me something cool".) We'll see.
That said, I'm living comfortably. I have a large house, some harvesters and a few hundred k in the bank. Sure, I could probably make that much doing missions on Dathomir in a day or two, but, hey, I'm happy. I can replace my droids when they die (stupid permadeath) and I can buy anything else I might need, so I think I'm doing fine.
But rich? Not at all.
I have a ton of metal saved up that I can still sell, but someone has been selling it so cheap on the bazaar lately that I am holding onto it for a few days and then selling some more. The rest of my bazaar stuff I sell my novice and field 1 goods as well as have some on my vendor. These items sell so quickly on the bazaar that I am constantly restocking it. I think many master tailors around my area only seem to make master tailor items. Many people can't afford these and don't know where else to get lower items.
I bought something in a shop next doot to a master tailor, and decided to go in and look at their shop. I was drooling all over the display and thinking how much I couldn't wait until I could make those items. In walks a wookie and there were no wookie items on the bazaar, so he asked me if I could make him some. LOL. I sent them an email to my shop and told them that I always keep wookie wear in stock.
Anyway. so far I am not having money problems.
Keep track of everything you sell. Ribbed shirts and pants have actually been my hottest items. That and the uniform boots and all the travel/military/tech packs. The money I make off of those daily pay for my harvesters plus more, especially if I sell extra resources.
A few tips for those looking to make a little more than the average tailor tho...
1) Don't ignore the bazar. Even with my own shop, I make more sales off the bazar than my vendor. Also take the time, look at what other people have on the bazar, and focus on what people don't have out there. No wookie gear? Good thing to sell then.
2) If you're going to have your own vendor, spend a few points on the Merchant skill tree, getting your vendor on the map is a big help.
If you grinded to master tailor right away then you probably made money. At this point though, you become (stay)a tailor because you like it. I don't mind at all if someone asks me to make them look 'cool' or to make a 'loud' outfit. Thecustomers I enjoy most let me make them an outfit. They say, you know best.. and then it normally works out awesome and they love how they look.
I even had someone run into my shop saying "Help! I look terrible, can you help?" I cracked up but he went out very happy with the 'matrix' look. He was fun...
Lately I have been enjoying making male twi'leks look very distinguished
The head stuff on them look really nice.
On a side note: I have trouble stocking my own vendors so I don't sell on the bazaar and I stay away from town as much as possible. I take tells from referrals of other players I have made clothes for or people who always shop in my shop. One trip into town and there goes my plans for the evening.
I'd say Imake a comfortable living at tailoring but I also work my butt off. It is alot of work to be successful don't let anyone tell you differently.
Weaponsmiths can sell and make crazy moneybut ONLY if they are MASTERS. I can tell you from experience that until you get to master you do worse than break even. I had to mooch off my friends for weeks and only had 3 boxes into weaponsmithing. I was so proud when I made my first vibro knuckler. Sold one for 3k ... then another... then nothing. And to this day I still have some of the weapons I made. It was unrewarding, unforgiving (when people say your stuff suxxors lol) and downright a pain. If there are 2-3 master smiths on your server you're going to have a very hard time getting by if you're primarily acrafter. If you have loaded friends, then go for it
. I commend those who pursue this profession. I don't know about the other professions at which money is easily made though so I can't comment.
I jumped into tailoring on accident, just made a couple items in Dom I and took off from there, it was the last skill I trained. I hit master tailora few days ago and while i'm not rolling in the dough, i'm doing very well. It's fun making people look cool and making them happy. Money is just an added benefit and only part of the fun.
I'd say tailoring is worth it to me. For you, there is only one way to find out.

MONTHS? are you nuts.... you can get a Tier 1 and 2 in about 6 hours so one days play...a tier 3 in the same period and a Tier 4 in about 8 hours...it took me a week to fill 3/4 of the boxes....
Well I have two busy shops and I've been biting the bullet and have been doing custom orders *shiver*
and Since yesterday morning I have made 527k weekends are better of course but i usually make 1-300k a day.
You just have to have good business sence and you can make a lot of money.
Of course I had to hear today Make me look like Darth Maul only cooler and diffrent

My advice, go up the experimentation/assembly tree first. Colors and sockets will make you more money early on than new styles, and when you do add new styles, you'll have almost all colors and max sockets to implement with them.

After that, things went very well. I'm not a millionare or own a PA hall as a house, but money is not my goal. I do know Tailors who do go that "big profit" route though and do well at it.
I like it cause I can provide a service to people. They are happier when they leave (usually). And I don't have to rely on tips to do it.
It is absolutely not worth it, money wise. With the possible exception of chef, you will earn more money in any other crafting trade. There are price undercutters in every field, but ours are imbued with a religious zeal that makes reasoning with them impossible. And no matter how little you charge them, your customers will complain bitterly about having to spend about5 minutes worth of their average wages for an outfit that took you months to learn to craft.
