Thread: IS tailor worth the effort, money wise?

MONTHS? are you nuts.... you can get a Tier 1 and 2 in about 6 hours so one days play...a tier 3 in the same period and a Tier 4 in about 8 hours...it took me a week to fill 3/4 of the boxes....
I suspect he's not nuts, he's just trying to do it the same way I am... without grinding. Some of us want to play around and have fun, not click until our wrists break. I already have carpal tunnel, thanks.
I'm always amazed by the attitude of folks who want to grind up to Master in such a short time. If you're not having fun making the lower level clothes, how is being a Master going to be any more rewarding? I just don't understand the all-or-nothing attitude I guess.
Not to mention those of us who put in our time working our way through the boxes by crafting and selling probably have much better product knowledge about the lower level items. When you only get new schematics once or twice a week, you learn how to use them to make outfits very wellby the time you reach the next set. This may be a generalization, but I've met many of the tailors who were Masters by week 2 on my server. And trying to talk shop with some of them has been an education. I actually had one of them ask them what I was wearing once! It was all Novice Tailor level items, and when I told her she said "oh, I never bother with anything that low level." ![]()
Oh I just realized you're on Bria since Origins is on your server. Yup yup so am I. Gimme a /tell ingame if ya need any help. Oh heck, gimme a /tell ingame anyway
I promise, no gloom and doom. That other post, well I was just being honest about my situation cause the guy asked. Everyone has a different experience.
Javrie (yeah that's me ingame too)

I am slightly nuts, and I do grind for a portion of each day. But grinding everything I pull, I get about half a box of experience a day. For 18 boxes, that's about 36 days on top of the couple of weeks to work up the Artisan tree. Add in those days when my beautiful and talented significant other makes me a better offer and I don't play at all, and it's about two months to Master. Which, oddly enough, was the design goal for "casual" players. Currently, having worked at it since launch (and knowing the system inside and out from Beta), I have Casual IV, Field Wear III,Tailoring III, and Field Wear II.
Then again, half of my harvesters are pulling ore for my architectural training... since I've never been able to afford a factory, I will have to build my own. I hate factories, but the way the market is structured you have to have your own... unless you enjoy endless planet-hopping to fetch components. I could go much faster if I powergamed it to the hilt, or had PA underwriting, but... why hurry? It's not like there's a bonanza awaiting me at Master.
Money is not hard to make in this game, so I don't think that money is actually a reason to persue *any* profession. I mean if I was to obsess on that I could throw down 10 mineral harvesters on an ore patch and probably sell the ore for 100k/day. Or I could run a ton of survey missions over and over and probably make 100k/day that way, etc etc and I defy anyone to make that kind of money in any of the professions. The only reason to persue tailor, or anything else, is if it makes the game funner for you, and from that standpoint I think tailor is a pretty good profession.

i think you are nuts....not liking factories...please thats like saying you dont want to use washing machines or vacuum cleaners or microwaves.....
just a hint on architect...screw the ore...find an 85% metal spot and just pull metal and macro crafting stations..fastest easiest XP ...only takes 1 resources and gives 900 points per station...
Wow.. I am glad I'm not on YOUR server.
My local gunsmith's highest stuff is like max 20k.
I got my R4 Advanced for FREE. I just traded about 4k worth of fiberplast and duranium steel for it.
Composite is high.. my local Armor Smith sells his best composite for 250k.
Is the ecconomy inflating THAT fast already? Where are you combat folks getting your money. The ecconomy is based on YOU. If YOU don't make much money WE won't sell much stuff ![]()
I was pleased to find how absolutely impoverished tailors are, beside a wealth of of well...less than attractive clothing (decorative dress who would wear that its just another way to fill our crafting device with useless clutter) i wasted a great deal of my time grinding and investing everything i hae to findout how incredibly worthles this trade is. Unfortunately surrendering these skills would be like restarting the game, it tok me ofrever to get here and now im completely disappointed.
I took this skill up with the understanding that it would be needed and in demand, in fact it was point the developers pushed, well the jokes on us not only are there 12 billion tailors all making the exact same items theres no demand for it everyone either wants armor or a duster, how much does a duster command these days..nothing.
So i say we all salute the developers for massively disappointing its core of consumers, and thank them for all the mis leading press they pushed on us in the beginning. and btw I DONT WANT TO PLAY ON THE TEST SERVER.
heh.. someone sounds a little bitter.
Listen, you have to be creative to be a tailor. You have enjoy working with people to find something they can afford and something that looks nice (to them).
I love the decorative dress, it looks great on my little bothan female. I know what looks nice on transhodans, bothans, wookies and most other species.
I started a successful wookie shop, I have a wedding boutique and offer wedding ceremonies, unity rings and so on.I am doing a fashion show and I take custom orders every night!
It IS work... I work my butt off as a tailor in SWG but that is also how IROLE - PLAYmy tailor. She's a little work-a-holic and a busy bee. That is just part of her character. Many say she is the best but I never take thatas fact and never let it go to my head. I stay humble and service people as best as I possibly can. I never rush customers, I let them try things on, will change the color, until they are happy.
I make some money, yes... but it is work. If you don't want toWORK then don't be a tailor. It's that simple. I enjoy it. I went through a little burn-out phase but my customers totally understood and supported me anyways.
It's not the developers fault that 95% of the players don't have any imagination and all want to look the same.
There are countless beautiful items to make and if you're a good Tailor and salesman you should be able to make them see the light.
To me, Tailor seems to be one of the most diverse and rewarding professions in SWG and one of the few where you feel that you actually progress over time.
There are a lot of faults still plaguing SWG but the choice of clothes is not one of them. In this case it's more of SWG suffering from their players lack of imagination.
As for money... Who cares, really? As long as I will be able to keep my business going the way I want it too I have no need to be rich whatsoever. Being massively rich is pointless, it is still a game and as long as your not planning on selling creds on E-bay I'm sure a Tailor putters along perfectly fine.

I am currently grinding tailoring, and actually come out ahead on money when I am done. What do most of you do while grinding, sit there and click keys ? I find a nice spot 512m away from a mission terminal with a good deposit of gas and metal, and run survey missions. I craft while running back and forth and get about 2k xp per run (512m run there and back) and 1800 credits for the two survey missions i pick up. This more than pays for the materials i grind through while running with some cash left over. I am also working architect slowly, so i only have one fiberplast harvester up right now, so i buy a bit for every session. But seeing the prices I can get for the clothing i make, compared to the prices i get for small/med houses/harvesters, the return on tailoring is way better. Not exactly sure what you mean when you say tailor is the least of all crafting professions besides chef for making money. And at least with tailoring people come back. Once they buy a big ticket house, thats prolly the last you will see of someone. When someone buys a green jacket they may return and get a blue jacket as well.
HiJyss nice to see you on the boards as well as my shop
Well you met both my husband and I and well, I gotta lay it out for you. He makes much more money than I do hands down, no questions asked, don't even hold your breath and think otherwise. Minute per minute that we work side by side he makes at least ten times more and probably more than that thanI do. I don't know where you got the idea that tailors make more money than architects, but it's terribly flawed. Zavier is also the highest priced architect out there and he still gets so many requests he can't keep up. The only limit on money that an architect has is how many resources he can get his hands on. A tailor can stockpile tons of resources and never come close to touching an architect. The very first Master Tailors on Bria, oh yeah, they made bank. Regana is rich and influential, but for the rest of us that came up later, and now especially for you coming up latest, there's no way we'll ever touch what an architect makes per night even if we make a fleshwrap for every customer that comes through the doors.
I'm not sure where you are getting this idea. You are basing it solely on cost per resources. That's inaccurate in calculating the gross amount of profit. Lets take this hypothetical example I don't have hard cold facts the the math is there for you to see it. Lets say I go through 2k resources a night and say my average cost per resource is around 15 credits a unit. Average because regular wear and masterwear are just different in pricing, I don't really go by cost per resource. Lets say he uses 100k resources a night, which is fairlytypicalif there is an order fora large house or a PA in there mixed with small orders. He gets maybe 3 credits per resource. At the end of the night, in this situation I make 30k while he makes 300k. Oh sure my stuff is worth 15 resources a unit that's a lot higher than his 3, but do you see what happens when you add it up? One sale, bam he makes bank. Can you think of one outfit in the tailor line that you can sell for 190k with a profit margin of 150k? (that's figuring average cost of resources if personally gathered at 0.65 a credit)
And that figure for me making 30k a night...believe me that would be one heck of a nice night too. Cause while I guess I could grind it out and tell my customers "here take this and like it and pay me" I don't. I take the time to see what they want what they need. So to take care of one customer it may take twenty minutes, and if they are really picky even longer. So not all the time is spent making making making get paid. It's talking, talking, asking, listening, make, see if you they like, then get paid.
Not only that, but I started Novice Tailor long before he even realized he wanted to become an architect. He fell into it by chance and thought he'd dabble in it. What happened is he got so much xp and so much money because he sold everything he made, he didn't grind once that he got to Master Architect while I was left behind with 7 of my skill boxes complete and 9 to go. I didn't make any money until now. I paid out in training, in harvesters, thank god I had a financially stable architect husband.Otherwise what I did make went right back in while he just made profit from the beginning.
Not that I want to discourage you from tailoring, but I just want you to understand you are so off the mark on how much an architect makes compared to a tailor. And this is like the second post I've seen from you that has indicated that you have this scewed perception of the reality.
It just ain't so sista. Architects will beat us out on profit margin any day.
