I've been a master tailor on my alt for several months, and I've never had this happen until now. I'm a little stunned by this, but I know I can't be the only one.

Last night as I wasAFK with mytag up, a customer came in and bought a special order for someone else. I do the standard custom order in a bag and place it on my vendor with the words Custom Order - Customer Name. Okay, no problem, mistakes happen.

I send a tell to the guy (Tyreel) and tell him just to offer them back on to my vendor, and he tells me he is on the way back to my vendor.I log for the night thinking I will get the order back while I am snoozing.

This morning I come on to find the bag has been offered to my vendor. YAY! However, in my excitement at having the items back, I wasnot thinking. I accepted the offer only to find that the items were condition 650/1000. (/thumps head on desk)

So, how do you all deal with returns and people who cannot read? lol

First of all, I personally will never put the items in a bag... .too tempting. There was a rash of someone buying bagsthat were for other people and trying to ransome them back a while ago. Can you imagine, lol.

I have a seperate vendor that is labeled Custom Order Pickup. I put the items on there and in the description I put: **FOR XXXXX** with a blurb underneath that says: Please do not purchase these items if you are not the above named customer. If you would like something similar, email me. Please extend the same curtesy you'd like given to you. Thanks in advance, Z- (may not be verbatim... I use the notepad like a monster.)

Now this may be a bit controvercial (sp?) but.. I will and have banned customers from my shop for purchasing items on that vendor that is not in their name. I can't make it any clearer than to have a seperate vendor with the customer's names in the description. I use to put their names in the "name" of the item, but got feedback that they prefered not to have that. (lower resale value I suppose, lol.)

When I get a tell back or an email from a banned customer (only have 2 now, whew) I ask them why they purchased the item. Usual response.. I wanted it. My response, contact another tailor for anything else you want. Honestly, this is my time and my game and my fun. I utterly enjoy what I do becuase of the boundaries I've set for myself. It took a long time and a lot of lessons and readings from N'jessi and Kara mostly, but I do enjoy my time online now.

If you've got the money, available vendors, and lots:

Drop a small house near your main shop (or better yet, a vendor tent, if you can). In that shop, put a vendor that's dedicated to special orders. Leave that "shop" set to Private. When someone places an order and is going to pick it up, you place it in the special orders vendor. Add their name to the entry list on the building. When they've picked up their order, remove their name. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Of course, this isn't 100% perfect as there is still the slight possiblity that some yo-yo will pick up their order and someone elses. Still, it significantly reduces the odds of it happening.

Or you could just be mean like me and demand your customers come to you if they really want something made so that you never have to deal with this kind of thing. /grin

You can not have vendors in private buildings anymore or this would be the best way possible. :/

This happened to me twice in one week. I kept all the receipts, dumped the text and mails to the folder, and made sure every reputable merchant knew about them. One apologized, was very honest as to why he did it (curiosity.) The other quit.

All you can do is have a custom order policy, and also if youd like put some decoy bags up. Make a pack with the same custom name you give your custom orders, put some 1 unit resources i them, along with a uniquely named item like "You shouldn't have bought this." Snagged one more like that. It's definitely a bold step, but a good one, as they are breaking the CARDINAL SIN of merchants:

Do not buy other's custom orders.

I do the exact same thing. But I take it one step further - my city has a growing list of folks that are banned from ALL SHOPs, for buying Custom Orders not meant for them.

When fully half or more ofmy business revolves around catering to an individual's needs, I refuse to give any leeway to those that disobey the rules in favor of their OWN convenience, over someone else's.

And really - what kind of idiot buysa 20k backpack w/ someone else's name on it?? They don't deserve my skills. =P

Yah, can't make houses with a vendor inside private anymore. And merchant tents can't be made private at all (although you can declare residency on one).

The trick to limiting who can get in is to set an astronomical entry fee on the door, and add only certain names to your entry list. You could have a Custom Order Only vendor in a tent that way. I was in a player city the other day that had a PA Hall as a mall, but it's entry fee was 1000000000 or something like that and I bounced back out onto the steps. (Good thing I never auto-click okay) I was left to presume the vendors in there were Guild only and only guild member names were on the entry list. (Which I think is impractical now * for malls* as the entry lists have been reduced to only 40 names.)

In a shop with multiple vendors, you need to "hide" the custom order one, off in a room (ot a separate house) where 99% of customers never go snoop, maybe even conceal it behind furniture. Do NOT register it for the world map. When you list a customer's order on it, send them an email explaining where that special vendor can be found (with a kind suggestion to please keep the info confidential to help prevent "thefts.")

Oh. I also have a warning message in the item description, clearly stating it's a custom order, not to buy it if "your name is NOT on it..." and the warning any who buy what is not theirs WILL BE BANNED from all my shops. Enforce the ban if you have to do one too. Some people think you are kidding. I'm not.

I haven't had this problem yet…although I'm too cynical to think I never will. I haven't hidden my special orders vendor, but it does have a sign (pack) next to it stating that custom orders are to be purchased by the named individual only. The orders are placed in packs named "<customer>'s Order" and have a sale description of "If your name isn't <customer>, NO TOUCHIE!" If someone does buy an order that doesn't belong to them I'll ban 'em. Unless the order was something really rare (say, one of the new limited-use schematics) I don't think I'll bother trying to get it back—hey, I just got another sale, right?

I seem to be somewhat unusual in that, with a few exceptions (the odd very large special order - I mean, like 30 items large), I just throw "special orders" up on my vendor among its "general population," and seldom have much trouble with it. (Generally, if something's unusual enough to special order - i.e., I don't usually stock it - it's unusual enough that it's highly unlikely to sell to some random person by the time the customer comes to my shop.

I wouldn't do this with expensive bio-enhanced stuff, though I generally do those sales in person anyhow, so it's not a big issue.

most of my special orders are made on the spot when the customer wanders in. or I'm in the store to sell them the item personally when they come to collect it. the few times that i have not been i place it on the vendor i have hidden downstairs in my work room. Usually he just holds a few crates of cloth, enough so that people would only look at it once unless they were an armorsmith.

I've always had a backpack labeled "DO NOT BUY SPECIAL ORDERS THAT DO NOT BELONG TO YOU" with a description that says

1) Special orders are never discounted

2) chances are you don't want what's in this pack

3) You will be banned from my shop without exception if you buy someone else's order

After what happened to Sergia, I put some decoy packs up with various item counts and mostly 1 unit of different kinds of hide. I plan to swap them out after a while and change the names and values on them, so it won't be obvious that they are decoys. Because I haven't done special orders in a while, I haven't swapped out the decoy packs.

Customers may get tricksy and see if the special order pack is a decoy by trying to find a name on friends list (see if the person exists). However, I don't feel comfortable using the names of the people I know, for fear that they may buy the pack, thinking that it's a present.

Some tailors use a random numbering system (i.e. you have packs 1-10 on your vendor, and you tell customer that his is pack #7) but I'm afraid the customer will forget, or mix up the numbers.

In terms of the "secret vendor" thing - you can hide inside your crafting station, so, drop a crafting station on top of the secret vendor. Problem solved.

What I don't get is buying special orders in a pack from a *tailor* of all people! Every time I've made one like that, it's always been *highly* unlikely that anybody other than the person it's intended to would want what's in it....
