I have always done a combat class, in this game and other MMO games. I have no interest in being a Jedi and want to be a crafter for the heck of it.I am tempted to start a artisan and see what it's like to be a crafter in this game. Problem is, I am not sure what to specialize in.Tailor seems interesting and I would love it if you guys could give me the pros and cons to antailor over the other crafting professions (weaponsmith, architect, and armorsmith) and how important is it for a crafter to be his own merchant as well. Also what supplimental combat profession is good for a tailor?

I don't know too many pros/cons compared to other crafting disciplines, as I went straight to Master Tailor and I'm sticking with it (for a good while at least). A lot of people think clothing is useless (aside from BE enhanced clothing), but everyone wants to look "cool," and buying new clothes is the easiest and most diverse method to change your look.

One pro I can think of is that, right now, there is no experimentation on clothing, soresource quality doesn't matter one bit. The downside is that one Master Tailor's clothing is the same as another's, so it might be hard to establish/distinguish yourself.

I am also a merchant, I run my own shop. I also sell some items off the bazaar, but with the 3k credit cap that limits what I can sell there. I suppose you could be a tailor without a shop, but you'd probably make less money with a lot more work. Personally, I wouldn't want to be a tailor and NOT have a shop.

I also have Novice Pistoleer as a combat skill. I can dish out a decent amount of damage with a nice FWG5,more than enough to get me by if I was "pure artisan,"but I certainlywon't be soloing Lok or Dathomir anytime soon (or even some of the nastier spots on Corellia for that matter ). I mostly just need protection from aggros when I check my harvesters away from the city (and with vehicles this is easier and safer than ever). I occassionally go adventuring with friends on some of the more dangerous planets, which is why I went to the elite profession instead of just sticking with Pistol 4.

I usually have fun tailoring, but once in a while I get really burned out and need to take a break. I made another character on another server, and she enjoys being alone (no tells), getting her scouting up. So most of the time I enjoy tailoring but sometimes it CAN BE very very hectic. The emails never stop, the requests for custom orders never stop, the tells can sometimes be invasive when you're trying to do something else. However, even with that, I will probably never drop tailoring.

I really enjoy it. For me, the key was to find another tailor running a big shop who needed some help. She runs the vendors, and forwards to me the emails for the items she wants me to replace. I whip em up, and offer them to her vendor at 65-70% of her resell value. I just dont have the patience to run/maintain the vendors, but she needed help making the items.

Its a great relationship that fits my playstyle perfectly.

Well from hearing the other people talk about other professions, sounds like Tailor is the one I want to check out.

A tailor dont need to build a harvester, but buying some are a great way to save money. (Belive me, i wasted over 40k already )

With basic scout skills you dont need to buy hide. Join a hunting group when your low and see how the hide stocks up

Running your own harvesters isn't required, but it will certainly lower your costs if you do. If you already have some money then buyingall your resourcesis a viable alternative, but for me it wasn't as I was very poor starting out. I used to harvest my own hides at first, but eventually I reached a point where I needed more than I could collect on my own, so now I buy it in bulk quantities.

I find tailoring to be a lot of fun, I enjoy providing a product to enhance another person's game experience. Like others I've felt a littleburned-out at times, but I keep coming back to it.

It helps that the essential things like fiberplast and polymer tend to occur in high concentrations (85%+), and are pretty ubiquitous.

With regards to combat...I'm master tailor and chef, and half up TK, because it's fun, and so I can look after myself on my runs between town and my harvesters/factories.

I personally greatly enjoy tailoring, especially custom orders for appreciative people. I never emphasised the credits side of it, but I'm not doing too shabbily, although my prices seem to be generally regarded as low.

So master tailor, merchant, some scouting and either TKA or some kind of ranged profession is a nice balanced tailor then?

Tailor offers great creativity that other artisan professions do not offer. But it can also be difficult to make a descent profit. Weaponsmiths, armorsmiths, and architects can make high profit on each item but that is slightly harder for tailors I feel. The key is finding a good location that is not overwhelmed with other tailors and establish a regular customer base. Most tailors will probably all agree that a high percentage of their sales are repeat customers that like changing their clothing periodically. I highly recomend some merchant skills to offer a couple vendors and I also recomend spending time making your shop look nice with lots of exaples of the clothing on display.

Good luck to you.

What I found most appealing about tailoring was that quality of resources don't matter. I have always wanted to craft only have been intimated by the whole resource gathering thing. Tailoring doesn't require too many nor do you have to worry about quality.

The only con, as with all crafting professians, is the components you must build. But, tailor sticks out because unlike the other crafting professians you do not need to seek additional components or wares from other crafters, we have everything we need.
