Echoing ArthurDent a bit, one thing that's either a pro or a con, depending on your perspective:

Tailor is probably the most "service" oriented of the professions. Every Master Tailor can make the same stuff as any other Master Tailor, and their end products will be the same. A Ribbed Shirt from a Novice Tailor is exactly the same as a Ribbed Shirt from a Master, and has the same functionality whether made with superb quality resources or with crap. It's not like Weaponsmith or Armorsmith, where one could plausibly claim to be "the best" based on quality of the end product.

So the way to differentiate yourself from your competition is service. Making customers happy, having a wide selection of good-looking clothes on your vendor, roleplaying, shop design and decor, your *own* appearance.... All sorts of things large and small to factor in as reasons why someone should buy an outfit from you instead of one of a dozen other tailors who can do exactly the same things.

Excellent input guys. I love interacting with others in a non-grouping enviroment. That's why I love my dancer. So bascially scouting isn't really required because of the cheapness of them on the bazaars. The reason for need of combat, for me at least, is the fact is how does one get money at the beginning of their career. I know what you do craft at the start, couldnt be sold for more then a few credits anywhere. So I figured that I could combat mission for dough. Unless you guys have suggestions or tips for the first few skills within the profession, until you get a store going and making money to support one-self.

Hmm, I don't agree. Here's some ways to make money very efficiently when starting out:

1) Run survey and artisan missions. I haven't run these in months but used to be able to make somewhere around 20k/hour doing survey missions. Couldn't even make half that as a marksman until I got pretty far up into the elite combat professions.

2) Sell clothing. The thought that the novice tailor stuff doesn't sell is something you'll learn to be untrue once you've played tailor a while. There are a number of items you can make even with just the novice tailor box that sell really well. All the wookiee items, hide boots, travel packs, military packs, thin striped pants, formal shirts, and of course synthetic cloth and clothing repair tools are things customers request over and over, even when you can make any item in the tailoring tree. I made this mistake myself, gaining a few boxes of tailoring before I tried to sell any tailoring goods, and then it was like "doh! I could have been selling those all along!".

3) Sell resources. Since you're undboutedly going to be harvesting a lot of your own stuff to start with, it's really no biggie to harvest more than you need just to sell on the bazar. Stuff like reactive gas, water, and carbinate ore are all excellent resources to harvest for the purpose of selling (5cr/ea + for those). Even a single small harvester on a decent patch of this stuff will earn you 5k/day with little or no effort.

Charge what the item is worth, what your skill is worth. Do not think you won't sell items because you're not a master tailor. I am in fact trying to bring back wrinkled pants

Go to planets that don't have any clothes on the bazaar and stock them there, or look on the bazaar for items that other tailors are not selling and sell those.

People are always buying clothes... at all levels. You'd probably make a killing just selling boots, gloves and wookie clothes. I sell alot of hide boots, so maybe just make 25 pairs of black hide boots and sell those.

I am guilty of not making many boots, or gloves anymore.

I would add that the variety creates problems

  • enormous stock

  • if one items sells you must rush and replace it b/c you simply can't keep 4 light bustiers in each and every color on the vendor.

  • unlike other professions you can't factory create

  • you often end up "eating" items that don't sell b/c of whims/color/style

  • you often end up "eating" custom orders that the customer says is not quite right

But still, I love it. You just have to adjust your profit margin for the time committment to making everything by hand and the inevitable destruction of unpopular items.

I have taken some artisan missions and I am a little confused. I did read the holocron and still for some reason... I am not getting it.

Said I needed to find a metal with a 67 effeciency within 1024m from the terminal. So I find a 67% copper deposit andits 400m from the terminal, I start sampling and I haven't completed the mission. The holocron said that I need to find a deposit that is stated and sample the amount that is stated in the mission. Problem is, all I see is the effeciency and nothing about how much I need to collect... I am a little confused.

I'm not sure - I've never done an artisan mission - but I believe you have to make a waypoint to the concentration for the npc. Check the artisan boards using the "search" feature and you may find the answer you're looking for.

Here's how it works. Let's say the mission is for a 70% concentration of petro. You go out 1k from the terminal, and survey for petro. You find say a 75% concentration, and you go stand in an area of it that is > 70%, hit "survey" and boom, you get paid, mission complete. If it is <1k from the mission terminal, no dice, gotta find one further out.

It is of course particularly nice if you get missions for the very things that you are already harvesting, lol.

Just doing a cursory search, I turned up: http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=artisan&message.id=1639&highlight=survey+mission++survey+mission#M1639

Not sure how helpful that is. Appears you have to stand in the spot and survey, not sample... is that your problem?
