Thread: Hey tailor, make me some boots and oh, will you be charging me?
I had an idea about making clothing actually NEEDED instead of just wanted. First of we NEED decay bad, and that includeds the noob clothes you start in.
Second what if you incurred a slight, again I say slight, HAM bar penalty for not wearing clothing, and as your clothing decayed this penalty would begin slowly and build to a certain point until your clothing was useless.
This would finally make the tailor actually NEEDED, instead of just wanted.
The chefs could use some love too, but thats for another board.

I think tailors are somewhat of a unique situation. The amount of time it takes for you all to skill up, and the amount of resources and the lack of demand compared to other classes makes it a bit weird. I think if any class can justify way overcharging materials cost, it is tailors. I personally feel bad everytime I pay my tailor, and always tip or add in more to the total. Clothes are in demand, and I love them, BUT they are not in demand as much because they are not replaced in the sense that someone would upgrade armor, they are replaced for variety. You all probably have to create so much stuff you just throw away I would imagine, at least early on, that I think charging more makes sense. Personally some of my clothes are my favorite things about my character, and they are also the cheapest things I've bought.
I just made Novice Tailor on Tuesday, so I haven't been spammed to death (to say the least). I do have a price list on my web page, at infamousbrad.com/swg. Nobody has objected to any price on it yet, with items ranging in price from 200 to 1200 credits.
I do give a 50% discount to all entertainers (including elites) for their performance clothes. I also have a "starter entertainer kit" option, a steeply discounted loss leader where 200 creds buys an entire suit of clothes - but it only applies to new novice entertainers who perform in my favorite bar, once per entertainer.
I do this for entirely selfish reasons. Entertainers wear their social clothes more, so I get full UXP from them. Entertainers make good repeat business. Entertainers make good viral marketing reps, as they tell people where they got their clothes. And finally, I just plain like entertainers, want there to be more of them, and want there to be lots of stylishly dressed people around the cantina when I get the odd urge to dust off my fizzz. (What with harvester maintenance and startup cost issues, I haven't had time to play any serious fizzz since I made Novice Tailor. This is a disappointment to me.)
I have given away exactly two pieces of clothing in my whole career: two pieces of jewelry that I created just to test some color palette issues, that I didn't feel like bothering to sell. I gave them to a friend, a tireless performer, who's trained me in probably half of my skills without asking for tips; I hardly feel like she got the better part of the deal.
Nobody who has asked me my price has ever objected. I get more complaints about not being high enough up the skill tree to make people what they want, but that's another issue altogether. At 500 to 1500 credits for a complete outfit, and 500 credits per Military Travel Pack, people seem genuinely relieved that my prices are more reasonable than they were expecting.
I'd keep a complete set of items in inventory to show people- but that's 50 items, and I'm not even out of Novice Tailor level yet. With 110 maximum inventory, and the need to keep several crafting tools plus endless stacks of resources plus my own clothes, where would I carry them?
I wish I had a shop. Right now, the harvesters are eating me out of house and home, literally, and chewing up way too much of my game time.
But if I had a shop, I have no idea what color schemes would be the ones to stock for some of the high end items. I suppose I could just experiment, try to make each one unique - is that what the rest of you are doing? Honestly, what I prefer to do is custom work, anyway. As I explained to one potential customer, if I keep stuff in stock, how can I match each suit to the wearer's hair and skin tone? Honestly, doing custom work is the most fun part in the game!
(FWIW: city Restuss, planet Rori, server Kettemoor)
The other problem is that everyone seems content to just run around in full armor everywhere. I am nearing Novice Tailor, but have trouble selling my clothes for liveable prices. I ask people and they tell me they are a Marksman, Scout, etc. and that they need protection. They tell me this while sitting in the cantina. I asked a guy if he would feel better in some nice relaxing clothes, but it was no use.
Maybe there could be benefits to clothes like dress codes for cantinas (ok, maybe not ina place like Mos Eisley or anything, but in the more upscale cities at least).
95% of my male clothes are black.
Most of the female clothes I make in bright colors and white. If they want black they can buy the male ones. The rest will ask you for custom clothes anyway.
I make up cool color combinations, mostly. It is hard to judge what other people like as colors but I don't rely on selling clothes to make a living. I just think it is a hoot and a holler. I am a COMBAT TAILOR so Im out running missions a lot, they usually end up around my harvesters. Imagine that. =)
It is amazing the amount of outfits one can make with a little color creativity and style selection. Im not even out of Novice Tailor yet and my clients tell me congratz for leveling when they see me in a new outfit or the one I created for them. LOL i haven't leveled yet, I'm just being creative. Im just now starting to feel like I OWN Novice Tailoring and will be very ready to move up. Then let it begin again for Techniques, must have ORANGE!!!!!!
Only 12k more to FWI.
My tailor is on Intrepid and here is the plan I am working on. Forgive me if I don't have all the bugs worked out. I plan to charge a base price of X per resource, and double if hide, triple if wooly hide, is involved. This is for standard stuff, as I am not above tier 2 in any of the lines. Anyone have any followup on this? And what you think X should be?

a bit simplistic, but at the lower levels in tailor it works. when you hit III and higher you start seeing requirements for factory cloth, fasteners, tatoonian wooly hide etc. that is when the prices will jump.
