Thread: Hey tailor, make me some boots and oh, will you be charging me?
That's interesting... I wonder how many of you make schematics for synth cloth or reinforced fiber panels for free, because it's "not what you're interested in". THAT is worth a TON of money, yet you give it away for free. I always have armorsmiths contacting meabout schematics, I always tell them 20K at least. They always seem to reply "well so-and-so gave it to me for free!" at which point I ask them "Why are you still talking to me then?". I think I'm gonna start giving away clothes just for the arrogance I see. Some people make a living off of crate sells, but you don't care about that, so why should I care about giving away stuff I make?
BTW, I only give stuff away to good customers(I started making spec-ops packs and all of my loyal customers have received one so far. Not much, but a good way of showing gratitude for their business) and that's after they've spent quite a bit at my store or just have impeccably good taste since I enjoy making good outfits and can't wear them myself(I'm a TAILOR. Why can't I make Wookie Size reinforced shirts? Geez). I see anymore tells of "Well so-and-so gave me my last schematic for free", I think I'm gonna track down that tailor, stand around him, and shout "I'll craft whatever he can make for free". It's the same thing really to me.

P.S.- I stay away from the whole schematics/synthetic panel deal with armorsmiths, yeah it's lucrative for some, just not my cup of tea. I'm nobodies "armorcrafting 'Ho" heh
hear hear =)
People complain to me about overcharging (which i may well do on some items), but they still buy it.
Tailors are rare, and tailors are in demand. Some people dont' want to put on armor and have a 400 total penalty to their stats. They just want to look cool.
As for giving things away, I only do so for close friends. I've offered to give a few things away to entertainers who have paid me in the past for things, and they still pay me something, even if it's 1-200 credits. I've started telling people my cost before I even make the item. They go "can you make me black pants", i'll say "sure,1000 credits" or something. If theydon't want to pay for their pants, they don't get my pants.
Anyways, Tailoring is good money, and you just have to build relationships with people. I have people who just hang out in my shop to talk with me because i'm a crazy rodian guy and have good conversations, and they still buy things from me. I know one person who has 5 of my dusters.
Relationships are key to successful business, don't underestimate them. i'm done ramblind now.
My favorite is I had a novice armoursmith complain to me when I told him a crate of RFP would be 15K. He emailed me saying how my profession was not difficult, and how he had to manage buying hides, bones, materials and such. He cried cause he wanted to be an armoursmith and not a tailor, and that I should trade him crates for armour..I'm a tailor, why do I need armour, let alone low quality stuff a new armoursmith makes...
For all those tailors reading this a joint...lol
When I do make a schematic for an armour smith for RFPs... they need to bring me the materials, andI charge at least 7.5k or greater depending on how much business they do through me, and quality of Panels I can make with the stuff they bring. I tell those that do not like it...go ahead and become a tailor grind to FW II and Tailor Experimentation IV then tell me the schematic should be free.
Interested to hear if 15K a crate and 8k a schematic is way to cheap or not..haven't seen many of these on bazaars to check... A couple armoursmiths says a single crate can turn 50-65k sales for armoursmith, so about 30% of his cost seemed reasonable, and a nice profit as well?
Doupe on Tarq.
TESTIFY BROTHER TESTIFY!!!!
im sellin the thin striped pants ( black with bright red stripe) for 1500 and i could sell them all day
the Han solo wannabes are good for business ![]()
do not feel shame in maing a profit, instead feel shame for stopping a fellow tailor from doing the same
Generally if a noob comes into my store with 500 creds and is sad that he can't buy any of my high end items I give him a freebie like a pair of boots or some gloves just to make him happy.
I've found that when I do this they seem to come back whenever they have the cash and purchase your stuff for full price. This has made me very successful. Having return customers who bring their friends makes up for everything
Every now and then I give away some boots or a jacket to newbies who want to get out of their starting clothes but hasn't got the hang of missions yet. I give away some extra items sometimes when a buyer buys a lot of stuff, a shirt or gloves maybe.
Anything to increase the chance of getting the customer back. It's the way business is done. Everywhere. Not just in a galaxy far, far away.
It's certainly not something I make a habit of - if they buy a duster I'll throw in some gloves or whatever but.. I'm not gonna outfit hordes of screeching newbs out of the goodness of my heart
This whole thing is amazing to me.
I am an armorcrafter, a tailor, and a merchant. I do not deal with anyone, frankly, to get my work done. I do not give away free clothing, unless it is to a member of my PA, and I don't put "tailor" over my head so that I have to be bothered with people. I frankly do not enjoy people who stand around and expect me to model every piece of clothing I own, just so they can decide they don't have the money for it.
Instead, I've got two vendors set up that can hold a ton of clothing. Every time I finish something, I stick it on them. Most things, at least in the early levels, I sell for 300 credits a piece. My big money comes in from my armor, which I sell on another vendor, or on the bazaar. I've never had any troubles with any other tailor, but this may be because I don't advertise what I do.
If you don't want to be bothered with people asking you to make things, then take it off from above your head. Its that simple. I wander around with my title as "hunter" simply because I like the way it sounds.
