I've had this problem more with Dancer characters than I've had with my Master Tailor/Master Image Designer, believe it or not. Which I find incredibly amusing. I think it's generally because people chat with Zoelie face-to-face, and he generally has a male-only hairstyle and sometimes runs around topless. There probably have been one or two "Whoa you're a guy?" reactions, but not significant enough for me to remember them, or they weren't vocalized. Zoelie hasn't had many problems with his customers, he does ID work and makes clothes. His sense of style is a huge mix, sometimes quite feminine, others not so much. He's currently going around in a red and blink lined workshort and matching lined shorts. His look changes depending on his mood, heh. I'm surprised he doesn't get much reaction because his name is almost distinctly female.
I do, however, play female characters as well. I'm insanely jealous of some of the hairstyles available to the human females, not to mention the clothes they have available to them that males don't, though I wish males COULD wear them. Some of the gowns are gorgeous, so I make female avatars to wear them. I also love the idea of a kick-butt female. Basically, having her kick butt and do it in Grand Ball Gowns and other such clothes is my main reason for having a female.
Being male and gay RL, the gay comments don't generally bother me until they pull in the f-word, and I don't mean the one whose second letter is 'u'. Though, surprisingly, I tend to try not to flirt with guys, as either a male toon or female toon. With the latter, it simply makes me uncomfortable. With the former, you never know who'll freak on you and go ballistic. Heh.
