Thread: We should rethink this use based decay

Here's my personal opinion:

1) Clothing shouldn't decay based on combat. Who are our best clients? Dancers and musicians. They never die in their dancing clothes and some of them have outfits from a few weeks after launch.

2) With clothing decaying, the devs would necessarily need to fix the drop rates of rare items, and of clothing attachments. These items are too overinflated in the economy as it is now, and decay would make it worse. Fuschia, I hear you, but I think the solution would probably be to increase drop rates rather than making items immortal. I realize that people have relied upon this bug for a long time and haven't gotten their clothes repaired, and that's a bummer, but the devs have never been the type to say "we can't change this because the community will be pissed" or "It's too late to change something."

People with established vendors really don't have that many problems, but lately I am starting over and with the small demand for clothing being satisfied by a few people it is a hard thing to do. I stopped doing custom orders in starports a long time ago (but it looks like I need to restart) because tell hell got so bad that I couldn't enjoy the game anymore. Then about 2 weeks ago, my guild collapsed and the mayor destroyed the city I was in which forced me to move my established shop. After all, no one is going to go out into the middle of Talus with no city to go buy clothes. So I moved everything back to my original (but neglected) Naboo shop. I also had a very popular BE clothing store right outside of Coronet Starport. Unfortunately, almost at the same time the city dissapeared, so did the house with my vendor. I waited a week to see if anything would be done about it, but now I have had to restart that shop. It is amazing how many people forget about a shop after a short closing like that! Anyway, in the past week I have sold exactly 3 pieces of clothing! It would be really nice if the demand for clothes was strong enough that we didn't have to struggle for market share again when something like this happens.

I'm not a fan of time based decay. I'd just like the 0/0 to become unequipable, and to keep the cloning decay. I still have clothesthat I've worn non-stop for 8 years, and they're still in great shape, because I take care of them. Repair is so broken, that I'd hate to rely on it for something that I'm making an effort to keep in good condition. I'm very careful not to forget to take off my tailoring outfit when I go to check my harvesters, because I have been known to be brutally murdered by spineflaps. While the non-combat population would be less likely to experience decay, most at some point will venture out into the wild and may have to clone every once and awhile.

As a new master tailor, I'm of a split mind on this. Decay to unusable on horribly improbable/no longer available drops like the NS item would be a travesty. Decay to unusable on 30-million-credit crafting apron/clothes combos without a significant increase in skill-tape drops would be a travesty. But at the same time, sitting right next door to one of the most popular malls outside Theed, on the global map in an advertised ANNEX of the mall itself... I've made about 10 sales in two weeks that weren't to guild members.

My main character has a few pieces of clothing that have degraded to 0 condition. I destroyed them - I'd gotten sick of that color scheme and moved on to a new one anyhow. Pity that more people don't do that. And yeah, it's annoying that the only Healing BE clothes that sell are those to NEW docs/entertainers. Hmm... Speaking of which, I need to make myself an entertainer dress or something for when guildies want my slow-going BF/Mind healing...

I don't think use-based would be bad... If you're wearing it, it wears out. I know someone mentioned a lab coat that's been good for seven years, but how long does a pair of jeans last? Especially on a construction worker or a highly-active child? But for this to work WELL, they'd have to do use decay based on TYPE of use, which would be very difficult. OR at least based on what type of use a piece of clothing is meant for. That's more detail than I expect they'd go in to.

If they'd start making those things drop again, I could handle that as a solution. I'd be all for being able to loot a new one rather than being able to use my old one.

As for selling my current one, I would of course make it clear that the item is 0 condition. I'm not trying to make a quick buck off some unsuspecting player. >.< I may just display it instead though.

I guess the demand for clothing greatly varies from server to server. I never advertised my tailoring and literally plopped down a vendor one day. Within a few days, my Tux sets were sold out. I never receive order requests, but they always sell out quick when I stock them... I know several tailors on my server and they all have no problem moving inventory. I have heard that people on some other servers always run around armored, and that is a shame. All of this clothing really allows for fun role playing (and crafting ).

Decay should be implemented in some form. Almost everything else has decay. Repeat business depends on decay, destruction, etc. Items that don't decay only get destroyed, resold or given away when the owner tires of it and wants to replace it. Like furniture, pets and... clothing. Decay would bolster the "less-than-master" economy. And not all of us make a million a weekend. I'd say that's rather the exception than the rule.

It might be possible for a universal repair of any 0 condition clothing when they implement the decay. Perhaps set anything less than 25% to that level and let people continue until it is destroyed. A 100 condition item would be 25/x or 25/25, and a 1000 condition item would be 250/x or 250/250 depending on it's current and maximum conditions.

That would give the clothes a stay of execution, and allow people to take care of them. I'd love to see the NS bicep piece as a loot drop. I sold mine a long time ago for a high-quality pearl when my saber needed some loving.

If the devs can't do this, or are concerned that it might do bad things to the database, then it's likely they will simply wipe all the 0 condition clothes from the servers and start fresh, washing their hands of the problem. It's a sad thing to expect, but my money is on this solution. It is the least time consuming for them.

I just thought I would give some input on some of the ideas that I have heard that make sense to me:

1) Clothes that decay to 0/0 should not retain any of their benefits from tapes or bio enhancements. That way the people that use them will need to replace them as they decay, which is the way it should be. Perhaps as an addition people could be allowed to remove the tapes from clothes that have decayed to 0/0 so that people can freely use them instead of worrying about losing their million dollar clothes.

2) Clothes that decay to 0/0 should also lose their color and turn to grey. That way the people who do not use enhanced clothes will have a need to replace their clothes unless they want to look like bums. In addition maybe the art team could design it so that the grey clothes look tattered.

3) Clothes that decay to 0/0 should still be wearable if the person wants to keep wearing it. This is especially for the people who have valuable looted items that are decayed. Letting them keep wearing looted items that are not craftable doesnt really hurt the profession and allows people to display their loot on their person instead of hanging it in their house. Plus everyone else will not want to wear their 0/0 clothes since they will want either the colors or the enhancements.

4) Clothes should not decay from combat or death. Clothes should decay at a set rate only while being worn. IMHO the rate should be just enough for the casual gamer that plays about 3-5 hours a day to wear it for about 2 months. If you AFK 24/7 well your clothes will decay faster, and if you only get to play a couple times a week you shouldnt have to buy new clothes every10th time you log on either. You also shouldnt be penalized for wanting to keep multiple sets of clothes that would all decay even if you can only wear one at a time.
