Thread: Higher Vendor Fees Coming

That would definately be it for me. I like to keep a well stocked vendor. With us tailors being able to make over 200 items in multitude of colors its a given. In my main shop i have over 800 items in stock, in my satellite shops 300-500 items. And i still spend alot of time doing one on one custom tailoring. Charging a set rate on number of items on a vendor just dont make sence, if anything charge it per sales. But if this comes im for sure gone. I cant run a business if my fees are 200k a day.

Gonna quit too if they do that. Crafting simply isn't worth it anymore. Too much **edit** pain and suffering for virtually no reward and the devs just keep trying to make it worse and worse and worse. It was fun while it lasted.

Poor Binky.. my little 8ft tall wookiee vendor's gonna die I guess. Hope my customers enjoy paying 5% bank transfer fees...

You could just keep poor Binky around as a means to transfer credits/items without the 5% bank charge fee. Assuming Binky doesn't need to be paid to just stand around and look pretty most of the time.

They could at the very least actually fix all of the other broken things in Merchant before doing this... if I didn't have to reset my ads andmy vendor's barks everyday, if premium sales did something other than charge you more money...

*sigh*

I'm terrified by this idea. If they do this, I'll have no choice but to close my shop down. There is no way I can afford to keep a decent selection of goods on it if my maintainance is that high.

I love being a tailor. But if I can't even have a shop that customers can visit when I'm not on, I don't see much point to remaining one.

There is a whole elite profession based on merchants. By making it hard for the semi-serious merchant, they are protecting the merchant profession.

-------

The problem is that the merchant profession wont be viable until the player cities concept is fully implemented as advertised.

With player houses scattered in the countryside, artisans more or less have to dabble in the merchant class (with ad III or y having their vendors advertised by hawking or placing "bazaar ads") in order to survive.

If/when we get real cities, with real shops, displayed on a map, in a city environment providing each service (shuttles, medic centers, cantinas, missions ...), having a profession that can set up and run real shops, with supporting game systems, will be extremely worthwile.

But as the game is temporarily (hopefully) in an unfinished state, you are not going to "fix" or give a value to a "true merchant" with a heavy handed nerf to personal shops.

PS : I 100% support higher maintenances rates for vendors, and fully understand NPCs are broken. However, basing the prices on the size of your inventory instead of the volume of actual transactions just screw up our profession, because every self respecting tailor WILL propose a large selection of color and clothing types choices - while an armorsmith or an architect can get away with stocking just a couple of each major item he can make and resupply his merchant as needed.

This is what I have to say...This sucks gigantic **edit**ing balls. Not only will it totally **edit** me over, but it's also a retarded concept. What retail establishment pays its employees based on the total amount of inventory? If the vendor sold on comission that would be one thing (although still fairly ridiculous for a profession like tailoring), but this is **edit**ing retarded.

It's like **edit**ing with crafters gives the devs joy. Fighting is a way more efficient way to make money AS IT IS. We don't need more **edit** to deal with.

Screw that. I'll just remove the vendor all together and use my shop as a display store. That way I'll just take custom orders only.

I'll probably switch to more custom orders as well. Especially for the higher priced items. Even before this "announcement" I was planning to upgrade to a medium house for my shop. I'll just cram the place with displays, and keep my vendor stock at 100K or lower.

Although, I do have a feeling they will halve the fee. I have a sneaking suspicion they went in "high" so that there would be a huge uproar and then they could give us a "break." Call me a cynic..

I have a droid vendor (only business 4, no merchant skills) so I already pay this fee. And yes, it's expensive. But it's not impossible to pay it - you just have fewer items on the vendor.

I will not wholesale to a Merchant. If this change is implemented as planned, I will be the best-dressed Scout/Cabineer in my galaxy.

Well, I disagree. At first, I thought vendor fees this high were/are a terrible thing. You pretty much have to guarantee you're going to sell something in order to minimize your losses (and then you can overcharge on your items to make up for the maintenance difference). Meaning it cuts out the semi-serious artisan/crafter-merchant. Instead, vendors will be left to those who focus solely on vendors -- Merchants.

There is a whole elite profession based on merchants. By making it hard for the semi-serious merchant, they are protecting the merchant profession. It's actually a boon for tailors... it means instead of competing with 100 other tailors with their own shops, you'll hook up with a merchant, who generates more traffic, and be able to sell in bulk... without having to own a shop or find your own customers. Serious merchants can afford the fees, because they're pretty much guaranteed to generate traffic, based on their advertising, the death of non-merchant shops (no competition) and their high volume of items/stock.

It really doesn't seem such a bad thing now...

Actualy, you're missing the fact that after buying their stock, merchants have a much lower profit margin than crafter/merchants do, since they have to buy their stock from someone else. If merchants don't move an item in 1-2 days, their profit is gone. And they can't store the itmes anywhere, due to current item limits. Merchants would be hurt the worst by this, since a pure merchant doesn't create his/her own items to sell.

As a tailor/armorsmith, I could dump my inventory, put up some sort of sign saying "e-mail me to arrange a personal consultation" and still make some sort of money, although very, very poor amounts. What's a merchant going to do with no goods to sell?

My guess is give up their merchant skills and try something else... provided they don't just log out and cancel their account.

Well yes, the "simple" solution is to just keep fewer items on your vendors. And I imagine that is what many people will do. That will hurtbusiness, disappointcustomers and drive down foot traffic to shops in general.

My shop has been open for 20 days now - in that time I have sold an average of 5K per day off my vendor. I took out face-to-face sales, and just looked at vendor sales. My usual inventory is 140-200 items, so I estimate that my stock value was probably 75K to 125K. So, my maintenance fees under the proposed plan (or with a droidvendor) would have been 2250 to 3750 per day. Putting my accountant hat on, that means that 45% to 75% of my daily sales amount would have been eaten up by fees. Does this seem right?

As we advance towards Master it will only get worse.. a 10K master item will cost 300 credits per day to list. For one item! In one color! For one day!

Anyhow, I'll be interested to see what the end result is. I am a full-time tailor so if I need to do most of my business face-to-face, it won't be so bad. Those people who actually like to travel the galaxy and adventure some will be hit the hardest.

If they implement the fees, it's going to be "bye-bye Tailor" for me. Other professions can get away with keeping their stock low on vendors, but we cannot. There's too many clothing choices, much less color choices....and while some people are perfectly content hanging out in their shop & selling (which there's nothing wrong with doing, but it's not my cup of tea!), I want to get out & explore the world. So, basically I'd have to be a slave to my shop in order to afford to stay in business? No thanks.

I did already voice my opinion on that thread---hopefully if enough people speak up against it, maybe they'll implement another idea/suggestion.
