Thread: A reminder: continue to protect yourself against fake bank tips

I just want to make sure everyone is aware - I remember reading a little while back that if the name has caps then it's authentic and if it's all lowercase it's fake. This is not true. I have a bank tip email from a friend named xuran, where I had tipped him money. The from is xuran, all lower case. When he created the character, he didn't capitalize his name. Also, he has no last name. There's no way to tell for sure if a banktip email is fake (that I know of), but at least if it's got a last name you know it's legit.

One morning I had tended to a customer. The was the first or second time I had met her, and thus, didn't really know her that well. I made her the order and she paid me for it. Later, when I logged in, I saw that I had received a bank tip email from her for 1 Million credits!! I was estatic, thinking *wow* she really liked my services.

I always know how many credits I have and was quite disappointed when I did not see a 1 Million credit increase. I wasn't sure how to break it to her the next time that I talked with her, hoping she didn't think I was scamming her if she ever asked me if I received her generous tip.

...well, a few hours later she logged on and we started talking. I mentioned to her the 1 Million credit bank tip email that I received from her, and she's like "Oh, you liked that email? Funny stuff huh" And I'm like "Funny" she says "Yes, it is a joke email. I thought it would be a funny joke"

*sigh*

...very funny, "Ya right"

I've only recently been made aware of this from a surprisingly knowledgeable and helpful customer. In the past I've thought - 'hang on I'm sure I had that balance before the tip?' - so God know's how many times I've been ripped off. My suggestions to the Devs regarding this are the following:

  • System message (repeated in the chat window) listing tipper and amount.

  • E-mail not to be sent from the tipper but from 'Galactic Mail Delivery Service'.

It seems a real shame the bank is becoming more and more redundant - but I will take up your advice NJ62 and empty my bank in future. Thanks.

First time ive heard of this,

While it wont effect my tailoring as i work exclusivly on vendor sales (if its traded then its because its a freebie to a friend).

Does make me wonder how many have done this with my ID'ing though, i guess i should be more thorough
