Thread: A reminder: continue to protect yourself against fake bank tips
Because the "from" field on a bank tip is the player's name, it is hard or impossible to tell if a person has tipped you from the bank, or sent you a fake banktip e-mail from his mailbox. While normally I would not draw attention to this issue, for fear of encouraging evil-doers to try out this heinous practice, it's now widespread enough that the "secret is out."
How to Protect Yourself from Fake Bank Tips.
Empty your bank account. It will then be very easy to see whether you actually got the bank tip if all your money is in cash.
Insist on Cash Only. Keep the waypoint to the local bank in your datapad, and remind customers to retrieve cash before getting a custom order. If someone doesn't have cash, point him/her to a bank and send him/her away.
Keep your Bank Tip E-mails. This way you may have evidence, should the person rip you off.
Use your judgment and be careful!
Wow - I never thought of that. At first when I read it I was a little lost (yeah, I'm slow like that, tehehe), but after reading a few more sentences, I understand now! I can't believe people could actually come up with something like that... fake bank-tipping. I think a while back though, bank-tip emails never used to be from the "tipper". Perhaps the DEVs might want to fix that.
After reading this, I'm going to so much more cautious with my orders and sales... Thanks NJ ![]()
As an image designer and dancer I've had this problem. One thing I've thought of that would be convinient for *me* is when someone requests image design, to simply meet them at the bank. ..doesn't work well for dancers though.
I've reported it twice, the first time the CSR hadn't heard of it and had issued the complaint in their nightly report. THe second time about a month later, the new CSR knew of it and assured me that something was being done...
Hopefully it involves not using the sender's name like that, but treating it like a regular system message.
This is the second reason why I do vendor sales only. The first reason being The Merchant's Friend program.
I hope the Devs do sort something out, we really don't need more ways to cheat other players!

My last post wasn't too clear so let me try again. If I bank tip you, I believe the email you get will be from 'Bucky Buchanan', i.e. it comes from the system. But if I email you a fake bank tip, I think it comes from just 'Bucky'.
Has anyone else found this to be true, and is it a way to verify authenticity, or is there something I am missing?

Many char's including my alt only have a first name.
Hey n'Jess.. this is wide spread enough now.. maybe a sticky for those new to the business and are not aware?
Just a thought. We adore you!!! ![]()
What I hate are the pre-emptive bank tips. I tell someone the price and they bank tip me immediately. Unless I am very prepared, I have no way of knowing if it was legit or not, and no easy way of handling the situation.
Thanks for the first-name/last-name tip though - that will definitely help in many cases.
