Thread: STILL no YELLOW in our 55 colors! We're missing a primary color!
"Red, yellow and blue are primary colors! Lets not confuse people."
Yes, but SWG clothing "colors" are NOT "colors" they are "effect of colored lights on a texture". So in this case, as someone above pointed out we use primary colors based on LIGHT not COLOR. Red, Green, Blue the RGB scale is what we use in this game.
"Saying since our monitor only uses the additive primaries we don';t deserve the additive primary color yellow is just plain silly."
No, it's not your monitor, it's the game engine. 3D Game engines color items by shining a colored light on them. If you can find CYM lights, more power to you.
Till then we're stuck with RGB lights. ![]()

hehehe Yellow is not a primary color! I'm pretty sure they are using an RGB color scale not CYM. Also if you wanted a pure black or pure white or bright yellow they would have to go in and edit the existing color lookup table as they only allow for 256 colors. So if you wanted new colors, you would lose old ones.

Despite the fact computer monitors mix light instead of paint generally using pixels made up of R, G, and B), basic color theory dictates that Yellow IS a primary color, one from which all others are constructed. Mixing light works differently, technically, but the point stands. As for getting rid of other colors, there are MANY I'm SURE wouldn't be missed.
Each color, generally, has ten versions in 10% tints. There are something like THREE different series' of grey. Although I like having warm grey, cool grey, and straight grey, I (and I'm sure other designers as well) would gladly give up one of these series' (or truncate them to 5 variations) for a good Yellow series, based on primary yellow. Or how 'bout some of the dull browns/greens/etc?
It's sad we can't have a true 16bit color mixer, but I'd like the basics covered, frankly.
As for no pure white, we really DO get a pretty good "pure" white. I'm sure it's more like hex #EEEEEE than hex #FFFFFF but it's quite functional under textures that aren't too dark. Black, similarly, is a pretty functional black. I think the issue here is the textures that lie on top of our color choices. A pure white looks a lot less "pure" with some of the busier textures over it. And as for black, I think the idea is that the textures need to be slightly darker than our "black" to be seen--again, i think the black is pretty serviceable. These issues could be solved with more complex pixel shader routines to deal with light and shadow, but theres a number of reasons that's infeasable right now.
In respose to clothing being "only aesthetic", "not good for anything, really", and therefore less important, that's pretty subjective. Depends on how much stock you put in aesthetics. I, for one, think looking good and having creative control is VERY important. I LOVE buying stuff just to make my house look better and I'd easily spend money on a set of clothes that was expensive before a gun. The yellow issue, the color control issue, and getting more schematic designs is what would make my SWG experience great! I'd like nothing better (really!). I'm also really pissed that droids can't be painted yet. I'd have a pink r2 that did nothing before a badass unit with all the bells and whistles any day. You're talking to the girl that spent 100k on pets she couldn't control cuz she thought they were cute! And I'm not alone on this issue...
So unite! Our aesthetic concerns are both valid AND important. We need BE components working to add functionality, but we also need our colors and schematics working!

Before I get flamed, I realize i said that Yellow was a primary from which all other colors are constructed. Oops! this is definitely not so. Yellow (using your basic color wheel) is a component of 33% of colors.
Didn't realize how much grief would be caused around calling yellow a primary. I concede that it depends on the color system you're using. RGB, CMYK, RYB and even alternate non-color based systems like YIQ: used by composite video signals, HLS: Hue, Luminance, Saturation, HSV: Hue, Saturation, Value (also referred to as HSB substituting the word Value for Brightness).
The point stands. Yellow is a basic color. It exists in NPC and loot drop clothes. It exists as a default color in our schematics. It's one of the colors i was REALLY looking forward to having in the 55 extra colors patch.
We should have it. No reason not to. Ditch some browns or greys to make room, devs. I'm certain your staff artists could help you redo the color system to make it a little more balanced... I trust their taste.

I can't believe we're missing a primary color, there are only 3 for chrissakes!
I get many requests for yellow, and people can get pretty dissapointed when all I can offer them is "mustard" and "pastel yellow"
*sigh*

The person arguingabout why we don't have the color yellow was basing it on the fact that our monitors display the additive primaries which are red, green and blue.
I dont know if you mean me, but I don't meanto say that it's the reason we don't have yellow. I can't think of a good reason not to have yellow. I'm just a geek that likes to argue technicalities
if i see him again i'll take a screenshot.
OMG
I didn't realize that was gonna start a whole huge argument!
LOL.. I just know my primary colors and yellow is one.
I also realizethatcomputers do use a different primary 'color' base, like when I use adobe photoshop. However,I can still get yellow using the RGB coloring pallette... in fact I can get a ton of yellows ![]()
No need to argue over a simple misunderstanding. ![]()

Point of order... RGB are not primary colors. The term primary colors is a pigmentation term.
Most computer/web geeks are familiar with RGB, and maybe even CYMK, but it is incorrect to refer to 'primary colors' when talking in those terms. The term primary colors always means red, yellow and blue. When discussing RGB color rendering, you have base colors of red, green and blue.
So the original poster is correct. Perhaps unrealistic to emphasis primary colors in a base color system, but she's using the right words. Let's just face it... there's no canary yellow, no matter how you get there.

Jesus, I don't believe I'm leaping into this...
Red Yellow and Blue are primary colors of PIGMENTS, as in paint, dyes (as in clothing) etc. All colors = black. No colors = white.
Cyan Yellow Magenta are primary colors of LIGHT and in photography. This is also your color printer cartridge's colors. When you get your pictures developped, the printer tweaks them --cyan opposite red, yellow opposite blue, magenta opposite green. All colors = white (light). No colors = black (no light).
Red Green Blue, or RGB scales are something unique to computer graphics, television monitors, etc. I am a working artist (painter and printmaker) with a degree, and also spent 4 years in the photo industry so I know what I'm talking about for those first two. The RGB thing I don't know about much...so listen to the computer graphics geeks on that one, cos in light and in pigment I don't see how green ends up being a primary color hehe.
NOW, aside from that, Yellow, by any other name, is not on our palette. True goldfinch, lemony, crayola yellow. We all agree on that right? ![]()
