Thread: need some advice on what to name a color
I love this thread! I haven't moved very far up the color scale as of yet, still just barely over novice tailor but i've been using only one slection of most of the shades i have available now and think i have finally found some color names that customers respond to well; Onyx, Ivory, Cobalt, Golden, Pigeon, Burgandy, Forest, Blush, Cafe, and Champagne.
For anyone who hasn't experimented w/ color names it really helps boost sales in my experience. Ppl seem to respond better to buying a shirt or skirt titled Cafe vs. Brown, lol
The rest of the greys I sometimes use in outfits for myself or for friends, because some of them you don't see around that often. One of the guys once told me that he had a tailor run up to him and ask him which grey that was! He told her my name but she never got in touch with me...
Right now Pantone (who maintains one of the major color standards) is selling a set of color cards with a few hundred colors for $14.95 as a special. It is not free, and you still have to calibrate your monitor but it is nice to have a set of industry standard color names that people can look up and see themselves. Other names are fun, but when I see a color name like "misty glen" I usually only have a general idea of what color it is until I see it. Unfortunately, paint manufacturers usually name their colors to sell paint and not really describe their colors. Of course, it really depends on whether you want a color name for marketing your clothes, or for helping people make special orders.
