I'm just starting tailoring and i want to get tailoring 4 asap so i canuse cool colours in my clothes I thought to get the most xp per item you had to graind the most complex item.. atm that's a military travel pack for me (23 complexity i think?). But i see everyone here says to grind ribbed shirts which has a lesser complexity? I'm confused

btw this is by the most fun and creativecrafting profession after one day i'm hooked

... plus military packs can be given away faster than hot cakes.. last night after grinding 30 or so of them.. i went to AH and had given each one away to a different person in about 10mins.. which gives me xp for people wearing my items doesn't it?

Xp is based on total number of resources used (components count only as 1), not complexity. Ribbed shirts use more resources than the military pack. Most who grind are willing to sacrifice product by using the practice option, especially if the item grinded isn't that popular. The best bet too, if you want the quickest advancement is go up through field wear, until you get link steel gloves I believe and the keep going until you get cartridge belts. Then go up the others as you choose. You'll be making ribbed shirts or military packs forever and a day otherwise.

Oh, and clothing does not give usage xp that I've ever been aware of.

It has to be said though that if you want to cover your expenditure on resources, packs are the way to go, you can easily sell the lot of them for more cpu than you bought the resources for. Depends how much of a rush you are in to get through Tailor.

Even as a master tailor, I tend not to bother with anything but packs (and components)...I just mass produce them and have a constant turnover of sales.

It doesn't give any noticable XP (if it does it is really small) and if a lot of people do this it makes sure that no one ever buys a millitary pack from someone who has decided to be a tailor as their actual profession. They aren't great sellers for me anyway, but I wish people would think about the professions that they are grinding through.

Well seeing as military packs can be made by complete novices (like me)you wouldn't really expect them to be great sellers would you?..ThereforeI hardly see giving them away as having a detrimental effect on the profession

It won't have a detrimental effect on the profession, but I disagree with the first statement. The master items were great sellers when we hit the top level all those months ago. Everyone was running around in their favourite coloured tactical skinsuits. However the most expensive items became so common that now the looks that stand out are creative ones made from items across the range. I for instance am wearing pants that a weaponsmith could probably make, and recently traded my bounty hunter pack in for one of the artisan ones.

All about the look, my friend.

Well, in the last 2 weeks, I have literally sold over 1k military packs. I'm beginning to think crafters are also buying them to use as special orders bags. I would have thought they'd already have a standing order with a crafter, or could craft them themselves. I like the new bazaar limit, since after I'm a master, I can still sell mini crates of packs on the bazaar.

Actually, it'll have the most detrimental affect on your fellow novices. There are (believe it or not) folks who are trying to craft and sell their way up tailoring. So grinding and then giving away one of the best selling low level items does hurt their attempt to make a little money at lower levels of their chosen profession.

Not to mention that if you practice craft (which doesn't produce a pack) you get 5% extra xp.

Crafting my way up the profession is exactly whatI was doing at the timeI originally made these posts.. however yesterdayI finally succumbed (spelling?) to the darkside, and to my shameand have been macro crafting . SoDonnah and Gyopineedn't worry, i won't be the downfall of the profession

Giving stuff away just sets a really bad precidence for so many reasons. Oh well, do as you like. When I was a 0-0-0-0 tailor, and clueless about what sold and what didn't, that was my big seller. In the right circumstances I was able to sell 4-5 of those a day for 1k each which made a big difference to me at the time.

Back to your original question. Actually military backs are bad for grinding for several other reasons as well (in addition to giving less xp). Unlike ribbed shirts, they contain 3 materials instead of 2. More clicks = more time. Secondly, they require hide, which although is hardly scarce, is certainly a lot more expensive to grind through than fiberplast and metal, which you can aquire simply by putting 2 harvesters down.
