Thread: JTL code being pushed to TC an opportunity and a reminder

Today, JTL code is being patched to TC. At this time, only JTL beta participants can access TC, while later in the week anyone can access TC. Apparently anyone will be able to play on the ground game of TC (this means YOU!) but cannot access space unless they are in beta. However THE NDA IS STILL IN FORCE for everyone. Please, have fun messing around, but DO NOT POST anywhere and censor yourselves in global TC chat.

I repeat - the NDA is in force so look but don't speak. It's really frustrating, I know. It's sort of a weird nebulous thing where they want you to be able to post bugs but what if the bug is about any JTL content... I dunno, my brain hurts. Better safe than sorry.

Have fun! (And one day, we might be able to have a discussion about this.)

I don't mean to be troublesome (although, I'm not making a special effort not to be either ) but a lot of folks arn't restricted by the NDA. What's to stop us from hopping on TC, checking out new clothing stuff and talking about it here?

The whole thing is rather confusing. My recommendation to them would have been to either get all content leaked out in time for the TC migration, or open public beta once JTL hit TC. I can't see how things aren't all of a sudden going to start seeping into the crowds faster now that non-betas are in it too. /shrug guess we'll see how it goes. I personally can't wait to see what its going to be like once/if I get into beta

I still do not understand what the NDA means in this case since it is a mixture of people who signed the NDA and those who did not. I suppose for tailors it would mean that 1) If you are in the beta and make a tailor on TC and there is anything different about the clothing, you may make the clothes, but they are not to be worn in public or displayed anywhere. 2) You may make one of the new player races, but you *must* wear the default clothing. If you are not in the beta, but it turns out that youcan make any new species or different-looking clothing that might exist, then I am not sure of what this means. It seems to me that if it is observable by the public without any breaking of the NDA by people in the beta, then it is public knowledge. There *might* be an NDA buried somewhere in the agreement for playing on testcenter, but since it has never been enforced in the past year, it would be hard to enforce now since there is such a strong precedent of testcenter *not* being secret and actual encouragement from the devs to come there and see new things before they go to the regular live servers. Anyway, I wish they would at least give us some guidelines. Just telling us that "The NDA is in full force" in this situation is not really enough and I will probably not bother to go to TC just because the rules are not clear enough.

I agree, the fact that the NDA is "in full force" for those who didn't sign it is troubling, and unclear. However, until we can get that point clarified, I wanted to remind everyone - be safe, don't post about it, because you don't want action taken against your account.

I just can't see the point of the whole thing. I can't test tailor stuff because anything that might be different from the live servers is forbidden. Unless they give us ships I can't test the space stuff unless I grind out shipwright and make one myself since no one is allowed to sell me one. It sounds like a situation where the dev team wants to test things out and the lawyers want to make sure that their (SOE and the project's) butts are covered (no offense to Jessi or other lawyers). Until they come up with something consistant the whole thing seems kind of pointless and potentially dangerous for people who play on TC.

I would encourage you to do the following:

Play on TC if you want to.

If you see anything new in the ground game, don't talk about it.

If you find a bug with anything new, use the /bug command in-game. That way you are effectively testing and you cannot be faulted for posting publicly.

In the meantime I am asking for further clarification about how the NDA on TC applies to the ground game since, unlike the space game, non-beta members are able to access the ground game.

Quite honestly, if it's on test center and 'normal' people can see it, it's fair game. It's public knowledge. They aren't about to suspend people's accounts for talking about what they see on a server that's available to every single player. That's ludicrous.

EDIT: Naturally, this does not apply to space or any of the 'beta-only' content. But things like new clothing schematics...if a non-beta player can see it on test center, I wouldn't worry about spilling the beans since the devs have already done that.

I completely agree. I just wanted everyone to be aware that the devs consider the NDA to be in effect on TC (whatever THAT means).

Well, I would assume it means that beta players should keep their mouths shut about anything that remains privileged information that only beta testers can see. But there's no reason to censor those players on information that has become common knowledge. I'd say, when in doubt, don't speak, but if for example an article of clothing is craftable by anyone on TC and regular players are wearing them openly, there's nothing left to hide.

I think it's completely ridiculous that I am bound by an NDA and am forbidden to talk about ANYTHING in the beta server that I know about, but now "some" of it is on TC, and some "other stuff" is on TC2.

There will be people that have no compunction to start posting on everything they see. Taking screenshots of stuff they are not supposed to and putting it on the web. I think I've been fairly good on the beta team, but now I just feel that all the privacy I've worked to maintain has been forgotten about, and they are just turning it all loose.

They have to release it to the public eventually and it is up to them to decide when to do it. The main problem right now is that they are in some sort of limbo where they are releasing the information to the public for all practical purposes, but legally they are insisting that it is still private information.

I'm sure somewhere that SOE reserves the right to ban someone's account in those cases, either in the EULA/TOS in the actual game or whatever you agreed on to access this forum.

me and my militia will be around New Unity, and we will remind folks not to talk about JTL-specific issues in the city (since I can't enforce anything outside of the city.) just a note: devs/QAs/etc don't have big neon signs on their head, so don't assume that it's safe to talk about stuff under NDA "just anywhere". otherwise, have fun on TC
