Thread: clothing price inflation

I've been selling clothing on the bazar (coronet) this week and it has been interesting to say the least. The most surprising this is the extremely low supply and the extremely high prices. The prices are seriously at least double what they were 3-4 months back, and the amount of clothing listed is probably one-third of what it was. very very odd. I'm wondering, is this a Bria-only phenomena? Not that I'm complaining mind you, lol, man oh man, making close to 100k/day on the bazar now is a piece of cake when it used to be that making 10k/day was a challenge. How times have changed...

I've noticed this same trend on my server as well. I have been dumping some merchandice on there that doesn't sell well on my vendor [still preparing for that 150 vendor limit nerf]. I've been having great luck lately.

On a similar note, I was the only person putting the new lamps/candles on the Coronet bazaar yesterday for the time I was logged in. I stood by a terminal and did more Arch grinding and those things fleeeeew off the shelf! I must have made at least 50k selling those items just yesterday. And when the most expensive one was 1k, that's a lotta lights!
Something I found weird too is no one keeps uniform boots up there. That, or they just sell so fast. *shrug*

About four months ago, I would post my clothes on the bazaar, and yes, theywould sell. Nowadays, I browse the bazaars, and clothes are so cheap. You see Exotic Leotards for 2500 credits - and that's a master tailor's item. I haven't put my clothes up on the bazaar for the longest time, but I think I will start again to see how it goes... to see if it sells.

I'm right with ya, Nola, about seeing MT items for next to nothing.

Usually it's a newbie tailor who is the cause.

Every once in a while I'll see a seasoned MT on my server doing it and I'm always SO tempted to grab them by the shoulders and shake some sense in to them while screaming, 'MOTHER OF GOD, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU, MAN?!!'

That stuff disgusts me. Metal bikini's are 1000, lekku wraps are 500, revealing fleshwraps - 2500. I hate it. I hate it all.

Although there are people that charge those prices (and I see those items on the bazaar - which is why I stopped selling my items there) I still don't have problems selling my clothes with my prices.

I sell metal bikini's for 10K, lekku wraps 5K, revealing fleshwrap 10K. They do sell btw - for I do custom tailor orders. Sometimes I get /tells from people who want me to make some clothes for them. When I tell them the prices, they'd say "What?!?!?! This other tailor only sells the gunman's duster for 1500!" Plegh! Luckily though, I still make good money through tailoring

I remember one time, I talked with this tailor about hislow prices. The person said "I am not going tailor to make money. So I don't charge that much." There is an economy in this game! Anyway, I can go on forever with these low-priced master tailor items. I shall stop here while I still can - Lol.

This other tailor only sells the gunman's duster for 1500!

My usual response to that is to ask why they aren't buying from this other person.

If I see Master or even higher-end stuff up for too cheap, I will buy it and resell it. I bought a used (700/1000) dress uniform jacket for 500cr, repaired it (950) and resold it for 5k

Shhhh, that's perhaps my number one seller now, I've even started producing them by the crate, lol.

You see, this is what's so odd about this whole thing. 3-4 months back we were all up in arms about tailors putting stuff like cloaks on the bazar for 500cr, or gunmans' dusters for 1k. And there was speculation of a lot of MT level items making their way onto the bazar for 6k with the new limit. But I actually haven't see that. No MT level items to speak of, and prices are more like:

uniform boots: 4k

sunguard: 5k

cloak: 5k

and so forth. Basically nothing under 3k except artisan level crap.

I think the answer's probably fairly simple:

1. Most of the "old-timer" massively undercutting Master Tailors (as some of us predicted would happen) got bored and quit either tailoring or SWG altogether.
2. Most of the new Holo-tailors simply can't be bothered to actually make and sell *any* clothing, much less stuff they only got when reaching Master. "I mean, my god, man, I've got to master Droid Engineer now, no time for such frippery!"

And for a variety of reasons (possibly including just not a lot of new players period), there don't seem to be a whole lot of new "real" tailors coming into the market.

Which all seems to add up to:
1. The vast majority of tailors in the game now are really serious about the profession, and see it as their primary source of income (and not as a "hobby profession" for when they're not getting rich on missions.)
2. Demand for tailored goods exceeds the supply of competent Master Tailors by quite a bit.
3. Most tailors thus have about as much business as they can handle, if not more.
4. And thus, they aren't inclined to price things real low to increase market share, because they couldn't really handle dramatically increased market share anyhow.

A lot of this is due to artificial distortions of the economy, especially from Holo-mania, but the upshot is that functionally we've got a lot of local tailoring monopolies, or sorta close. But they're not absolute monopolies, because the barriers to market entry are quite minimal, especially if you use grinding macros and whatnot. So prices aren't going to get *absurdly* high (e.g., in a "tailor cartel" agreement), because if they did, someone else would likely jump in with more reasonable prices. But it *does* give the established tailors *some* leeway in setting prices.

And on top of all this is the fact that there's an awful lot of money in the economy, and for many players, the difference between "outrageously high" and "ridiculously low" tailor prices is trivial. If you've got 10 million credits in the bank, there's not a whole lot of difference between paying 80 credits for a pair of Uniform Boots vs. 800 credits, or even 8000.

I think if you are selling the "right" items on the galaxy vendors you can make a lot of money. If people are asking for a certain item because they can't find it on the vendor, I make a bunch and usually make a lot of money. Even if you just login for about 30 minutes a day, make some items and restock the vendor. You can easily make 50k/day.

On Tempest you will usually have at least 100 live players in Coronet at a time. So it is a good place to sell your wares. If you just hang around I always get a bunch of tells asking to make stuff or train people.

Well, we all knew that the prices were too low, especially for the bazaar items....I remember seeing stuff like the revealing fleshwrap for 3k, and thinking to myself, "Doesn't it cost more than 3k just to make the thing?" All tailor stuff sells like mad on the bazaar, always has, don't have to go to a vendor, that you have to pay a ticket for, and then find the absurd place, then maybe pay an entrance fee, just to see if they have what you want....

Before ppl would not even think about prices, just stick it on the vendor and sell it for max, which I'm sure is what alot of ppl are doing now, with the new higher prices. I mean, some of the things on there are funny. I've seen someone sell 1 unit of a resource for 6k now.... All I could do was go into guild chat and laugh with my friends.

And now the 'good' tailors have a better place to promote their wares, because now there's very few items that really shouldn't go on the bazaar, my count is less than 10 items that too expensive for the bazaar's 6k cap. By my price scheme at least. The 6k cap made the bazaar a viable place to sell clothing, which means tailors can make money from the bazaar now, which brought more ppl to Coronet, which creates more lag for me when a customer tells me to meet him there...ARGH!!!!! Hehe.

It's the same on Lowca. I put clothing on the Bazaar in COronet, and I have noticed uniform boots going for 3K, just as an example. I've made a ton of credits keeping the bazaar stocked with the most I can place at a time. But I'm not complaining...I put master items on there and sell them for 6K. I know this is taking a loss relative to my vendor, but the volume makes up for the lost revenue in lowered price.
