Thread: Tailor pricing rant

My problem lately is with fellow tailors. In the past week I've had some grim conversations with up and coming novice tailors which mainly revolves around pricing.

Last night I get a tell from a novice tailor asking for a 3 socket leotard for 4k. She clearly wanted this to resell to someone else (at 5k too I bet). I've no problem with reselling and generally try my best to help other tailors. Problem is, I sell leotards at 5k and only discount repeat customers. We ended up in a 30 minute argument about my prices being way too high.

So throughout the argument I send her a tell (at 10 minute intervals) saying that the cost of the leotard has increased by 1k, explaining to her that this was the average amount of cash I could be making instead ofpointless arguing.

Thereseems to be two types of tailors, the ones who sellSpec Op dusters for 500 credits and the ones who sell things at a much higher price. It seems to me that it's the latter who stay around longer, have better stocked vendors and are more willing to keep pricing in line with their peers.

Surely an established tailor should deserve a little respect? It would be like me approaching Kelsaka (Infinity's Clothing Laureate) and telling her to sort her prices out.

Selling clothes at rock bottom prices is bad for everyone. It makes the tailor poor and it will eventually make other tailors poor.

What do other tailors think about this? How did you react to the problem?

Oy…while I feel for you in your pricing woes…not this argument again—there's a pretty big split in the tailoring community over what "reasonable" prices are, and every month or so a thread like this pops up and we all argue it out for a couple days, then it dies and we forget about it until…

And no, I won't mention what I charge or why

Didn't realise that this issue has died a death. I've only just experienced this myself.

I was going to add it to the 'Gotta love this' thread but decided it was a bit off topic.

I make clothes because it's fun, and I like making them. Often enough if someone asks me to make them something special, I'll just give it to them for free. I don't care about money, I want to have fun and make clothes. I sell crates of components to make enough money to live off of, but other then that, I don't worry about price.

I kinda follow Emperoress's reasoning on this one. I've been a master tailor for a while now and I'm working on Master Merchant and I rarely get visits to my vendors, people just seem to want custom clothing.

I mostly supply my friends and my guildmates with clothing and they never complain about the price. And I've always used the pricing calculator I found on, ummmm I think it was swgcraft but I don't remember. Usually they overpay because I spend so much time matching outfits for them. My primary reason for tailoring has always been that I think its fun and I like having all the different schematics.

I got accused of overpricing too for charging 5k for master items... In my opinion we are already one the professions that earns the less credits of the game, and that so many people just do it 'for fun' and chargevery low pricesis just gonna make things worse.

See, the reason for this is the lack of clothing decay, which completely eliminates the need for new clothes in the market. This means that once everybody has a few master items, if they dont want one anymore, they just sell it on the bazaar, good as new, for 1-3k, and everyone expects you to match that price.

I've given up on the pricing rant for clothes. I try - trust me, when I see another tailor putting master tailor items in the bazaar, I'll email them to let them know that they could be making alot more and I'll send them my price list of what I go by.

Lately though, some tailors are putting really good high PLUS BE clothing into the bazaar for real cheap!!! ggggrrr.... I'm sure when I sell the BE stuff my prices may be a little expensive to some, but hey - these are "special" clothes - kinda like armor. BE clothing is special in the fact that it is going to help or enhance you...*sigh* my pricing rant for the day...lol

I don't have a problem with fellow tailors... that's because I refuse to have a problem with fellow tailors... if someone wants to sell master items for 100 credits that's okay with me... if someone wants to sell master items for 1 billion credits that's okay with me... I just do what I like to do and don't worry so much about what other people do...

I'd just chalk your little incident up to a learning experience if I were you... thinking back on it I'm betting you can think of ways youcould have handled it differently... for example, it's my policy NOT to argue with anyone, anytime, for any reason... I know how I like to play the game and all the arguments in the whole worldare not going to change the way I like to play the game...

Here's how I would have handled it:

Fellow tailor sends me a tell asking for a 3 socked leotard for 4k...

Myreply would be: My price is X000, what color would you like...?

After she tried to argue I'd reply with: Email me when you decide on color... I'll email you when it's ready and you can pick it up at your convenience... (knowing I'll never get an email and that's all the better, hehe...)

If she continued to argue I'd repeat the above response one time, then silence... I don't argue.. period...

This seems to be a trend on more then one server then. I thought only Tempest was being plauged by horribly low BE clothing on the bazaar! I'm not sure about anyone else but my BE clothing does not go on the bazaar (not with the type of tissues I used - I don't get many so I buy good when I do buy).

My pricing is higher then some but I've never had a complaint (other then for 7.5K for the Twilek Nobel Crest as they wanted to garuntee 4 sockets too which I charge an extra 500credits to do so - Good thing as I now have 6 different coloured crests). I don't like selling componants so my money IS made from clothing and I enjoy it.. when I do sell componants I try to keep with market value so as not to hurt the business of those who sell. I think the same curtesy should be considered the other way around as well.

Guild sales are totaly different. I give half off for guild clothing with first outfit free. I don't sell these prices on my vendors, guild members must custom order or buy like everyone else. I don't even change my prices when I put them on the bazaar (those that are under 6k), if they don't sell they don't.. most of the time they do.

Everyone is free to set their own prices and of course the whole gap between all crafters will always be there. Maybe the up coming revoking of "hologrinding" might help us. Lets just hope so...

I guess I've been lucky then, not had anyone complain about my prices yet not even trainee tailors. But then if they did I would just invite them to find another tailor. With SWG having a player run ecconomy established crafters definately deserve some respect, after all we could all be hologrinders.

I set my prices via an online tailor calculator, Zephyria's 2.0 here: http://personal.windsofstorm.net/swg/so the cost of resource is covered, my factory's power and maintance is taken into account and a nice healthy profit for my time and effort The only time I don't stick to this is for mylong-time customers or guildmates and occasionally a newbie player if they are asking for 'basic' clothing.

And my leotards are 5k as well
