Thread: Looking for Swordsman Advice

Hi everyone,

New to this board, but I have been a Master Swordsman for some time now. I've never been that clinical about what my skills and weaponry are - I tend to intimidate, 2hsweep (if fighting multiple target), then 2hSpin (multiples) or 2hMeleeHit if fighting a single target. I am sure from reading all the good advice on here that there is much more I could do tactically to win more fights with the higher end mobs - and I mean nightsisters! I keep getting killed by Nightsisters, even though I have Master Swords friends that can solo even the higher end ones (not counting Elders). Must mean that I am doing something wrong, so I'm looking for advice - treat me like a noob if you like ! Incidentally Master Swords is the only elite combat prof I use - I have no lines in Fencer, Pike, Rifle, or anything else (my other points are taken up with artisan lol), so if you think I should get some then by all means let me know!

Here's my weaponry:

2x PH (250-499 or so) speed: 5s (roughly)

1x Scythe speed: 3.2s damage (unsure - they don't vary much do they?)

1x Gamorrean Axe - speed/damage not good, but got a dot on it (Jabbas theme park reward, I'm sure you all know the one I mean)

Any advice anyone can offer would be appreciate to help me with these Nightsisters, and other higher end mobs - I generally don't PvP but do engage in the odd factioned PvP event, so any general help with beating up people that persist in eyeshotting me all the time would also be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Until you hit the speed cap at 94, speed sliced weapons are your friend. You'll have more luck with a good PH that is speed sliced than you will with those 5second PHs. Same goes with the Scythe....3.2 is about a second slower than most I have seen before slicing. I bet a trip to the Geo caves (or 10) will get you the loot you need to get a better one made. In lue of a scythe (the poor souls who have no more scythe schematics left), the Executioner's Hacks are pretty descent, andare better than a 2H curved sword.

Also, 2HandMeleeHit3? yeah, its the highest dmg mod, but it is random....you'll have better luck dropping NS with Headhit3. All your damage goes to their mind, and isnt wasted on other HAM bars. Try to lure one or two from the group as well. unless they are low level, don't use the area hits. Just lure one or two away from the group, and headhit3 them to death...don't forget to intimidate!

For NS, medic or smuggler's FeignDeath is also handy.

For PVP..the eyeshot thing....a good stun layered Composite helmet is your best bet..also...a good sheild will go a long way in keeping you alive. A stun layered Composite Chestplate and boots are good to have for PVP as well. And once again, Headhit3....or if you have master brawler....meleehit3 till dizzy, and then lunge2 for the Dizzy/KD combo..then headhit3 I pulled that off on a TKM a couple days ago...had him on the ground and pounded on him...he was VERY surpised to have that put back on him after he was trying to do it with me.

Master brawler and novice medic would help a ton for your highend mob hunting. Intimidate 2 is obviously priceless and if your startin to get low in health then you couls peace and warcry 2 for some healing time.

Hi, thankyou for the advice! I'm getting quite excited about spending some time in game learning how to become a proper Swordsman, instead of the random attack spamming I've been doing for about 3 months now - the advice really helps

I've thought a bit about what you both said, and can't afford the skill points for novice medic (need to keep marchant for vendors!), but came up with the following template, wondered if you had any comments?

Master Swordsman (er .. duh!)

Master Brawler

Fencer 0400 (or whichever the defensive line is)

TKA 4300 (for extra posture change defense and meditate)

and for completeness lol :

Artisan 0040

Novice Merchant

Which pretty much cleans out my skill points including the Jedi skills I have since Pub 10. Any comments appreciated!

Here is my basic strategy when fighting somethinghigh-end likeNightsisters.

  • Intimidate2

  • Lunge2

  • HeadHit3 until dead

Rinse and Repeat.

Be sure to check out the mob's resists before engaging. If low blast resists then use a PH if low kinetic the use a scythe.

Personally, I would lose the fencer stuff and get novice medic with a +mod heal shirt and 400 power Stim Bs. Sure the swordsman's def mods are not uber, by I have no trouble with them...the line you picked gives you +50 to KD and posture down...sure, thats good and all, but thats more a PVP thing to worry about. Unless you are really low on health, no PVE content is going to kill a fully armored swordsman that gets knocked down, and if you have medic, you won't find yourself in the spot of being low on health to begin with. I think you will benefit far more from medic than a few boxes in fencer.

Agreed. The few boxes in fencer arent worth it, and if you really are looking for that knockdown protection, you could buy a crate of thakillo (i think thats it) food from a chef, which should give you +97 to protect you from knockdown for about 10 mins or so i believe. That coupled with your medic skill, and a +mod heal shirt and 400 power stim B's should be decently efficant.

I'm speed-capped, so when facing a mob of witches, I'll target on the most powerful one, intimidate her (and keep that stuck throughout), then area3 (spin or sweep for you, for the speed) until the weaker ones around are dead. At that point, depending on the targeted one's HAM, I'll either switch to mind attacks or stay with area until she's fallen in a bashed puddle of witch goo at my feet.

If it's a single target, mind attacks all the way. If she's strong (an Elder or Min), I'll keep up the mind bleed as well. Every little bit helps with one like that.

There's other tricks I use, but they involve Master Brawler, so..

I agree that you need to be using speed-sliced weapons, definitely. At least get some speed powerups for your weapons now. Ahrisa, brandy, and sometimes canapes to keep your mind bar full and special costs very low. Synth can certainly help if you're dying because of damage to your other bars. Always keep Center of Being active.

Good luck :-)

some great advice in there, thanks a bunch!

made some notes and looking forward to bashing in some of the higher end stuff - something I have never really been able to do, but always wanted to

one quick question though - /centerofbeing (which I have never used at all!) seems too good to be true, there must be some penalty to having it running all the time (aside from the obvious HAM costs) ?

Aside from HAM costs, there is only benefit to keeping Center of Being up and running.

It is your gift horse ,)

I never fight anything without CoB running. I know some guys might do something more fancy or have a continously looping CoB macro going, but my 'Center of Being button' triggers a CoB pauses the usual length of the CoB (I forget how many seconds) then triggers it again twice a few seconds apart to account for lag and cycles through that two more times. It seems to do the trick.

Nope. Just uses mind. But if you are mind buffed or using mind food, it wont matter at all. Just loop that CoB macro and have at you.

It does help.
